Content:
After a car accident, I was transported by a blinding white light into a horror game, together with my beloved cat, Bella.
Faced with the choices ??[Clear Game to Revive]?? and ??[Stay and Work]?, Bella pressed the latter with her paw.
So, Bella became the owner of a stray animal shelter, and I was her voluntary worker.
The vengeful monster bound by a blood curse, Ms. Pen, became the shelter’s bookkeeper.
Marry, the bride dressed in crimson wedding robes handled the supply of rescue food.
Mr. Wraith, overflowing with resentment, hauled cat litter and dog sand daily.
And the gloomy, spectral Boss, Mr. Specter, knocked on the shelter door every single day:
“I’m a lonely monster. Nobody wants me.”
“Please take me in.”
Just because I refused to donate a kidney to my cousin, my parents kicked both me and Bella out onto the street.
Trouble never comes alone.
Wandering the streets with Bella, we were both swept under an oncoming semi-truck.
I thought I’d reached heaven, but instead, I ended up in this horror game.
This day, Boss Bella was lazily sunning herself on the cat tree as usual.
Meanwhile, I, the lowly volunteer, faced the monumental task of scooping poop!
A little ginger kitten covered in wounds was batting at a feather toy, inviting me to play with him.
A beagle pup, its head and limbs unnaturally separated, whined sweetly for a can of food.
A kitten flattened like a pancake by a car, just like me, waited patiently for me to stroke its fur.
I looked up at the ceiling and sighed.
Worked like a dog in life, now scooping poop in death.
I ran a hand through my brittle, lifeless hair.
“Looks like I need to ask Marry for some human fat as hair conditioner tomorrow.”
Suddenly, a “beep” sounded, and several lines of text materialized before me.
[Is this the starter zone? Who sets up an animal rescue inside a horror game?!]
[Sophie’s coming! The male lead showered her with SSS-tier gear right when she entered the dungeon!]
[Just wait, our sweet Sophie will attract all the big shots to slaughter the village.]
My head was full of question marks.
Could it be a coincidence? The female lead they mentioned shared the name of my frail, delicate cousin.
Sure enough, a commotion erupted at the door.
A group stormed into the shelter, led by my cousin Sophie and my utterly blind parents.
The bullet comments exploded in a frenzy.
[Sophie baby is so cute!]
[Go, Sophie! Cruise through the game, clear the final level, get the reward to restore your lifespan, and live happily ever after with the male lead!]
[Hey, don’t call my girl a gold-digger! She can handle this dungeon herself.]
[Sure. What threat are dead cats, dead dogs, and staff as dumb as geese?]
[Stop arguing! Just enjoy Sophie’s show!]
Wait… staff as dumb as geese? Was that me?
How rude!
Sophie spotted me first as she entered.
“Sadie? What are you doing here?”
My parents, right behind her, looked stunned.
Recovering, they snapped at me, “Sadie! What are you doing here?”
Then, my father kicked a nearby cat bowl.
My face fell.
We could talk things out. Why did he kick the cat food?
That bowl of food…
It was made by Marry at midnight, chopping thousand-year-old corpse meat mixed with premium corpse oil from Baby Ghoul’s bottle!
Sophie freaked out at the sight of monsters in the shelter.
She was hurling talismans and charms.
Her Soul-binding Nail pinned the little ginger kitten with its flying intestines, ignoring its agonized shrieks.
She pulled out another talisman, paralyzing the snarling beagle whose head was barely attached.
The pour creature’s monster was nearly torn apart!
And the pancaked kitten, its organs mangled, also couldn’t escape her Demon-Subduing charm.
These poor cats and dogs, whether alive or as monsters, were always at the mercy of others.
My heart ached. This was bad.
These beloved pets were carefully raised by our clients, those big bosses!
Sophie stood in the center of the group, basking in other player’s flattery.
“Sophie is amazing! Beautiful and powerful.”
“King’s S-tier gear is fantastic. We’ll clear this thanks to Sophie.”
My father, Stan Carter, and my mother, Brenda Carter, beamed with pride.
Watching the panicked monsters suffer, I couldn’t stay silent.
“If you want to clear the dungeon, exit right. The animal shelter isn’t an active quest zone.”
The group’s attention snapped back at me.
My mother glared at me with pure hatred.
“We told you to donate a kidney to your cousin!”
“What are you doing here instead? Forcing your sister into this dangerous game to get the healing reward!”
“You wretched girl, you better protect her! Your sister needs that reward to live!”
She pointed a shaking finger.
“And when we get back, you will donate that kidney!”
My father slapped me hard across the face.
“Bitch! Don’t you know Sophie almost died waiting for that kidney? You better behave now!”
I clutched my stinging cheek and repeated,
“Players must exit. Harming non-hostile monsters is prohibited.”
My father cursed under his breath and kicked me hard, sending me sprawling.
“How dare you tell me what to do!”
He looked up at a parrot monster in a cage.
The parrot’s eye sockets were deep, bloody holes, its beak cut off.
My father reached to grab it roughly.
Sophie promptly pulled out a Monster-Banishing Talisman.
The parrot let out a final, piercing shriek before its remaining spirit vanished completely.
Oh no. That was Ms. Pen’s favorite talking parrot.
“These little beasts, I used to kill them for fun back home. It’s no different here!”
My father kicked me repeatedly in the stomach, showing no mercy.
Players in the horror game started with innate spiritual power. Their attacks could harm monsters.
Especially weak ones like me and these small animals.
Sophie watched me with fake pity, a satisfied smile playing on her lips.
She puffed out her chest and commanded,
“Alright everyone, clear out all these monsters. We’ll turn this place into a safe house of us.”
Her followers cheered, brandishing system-issued swords as they charged at helpless little monsters.
“Finally! Legit cat-torturing time! Sophie, can I take my time?”
“A rescue shelter in a horror game? Guess hypocrites exist in hell too! This bed is softer than mine!”
“Damn! Ghosts running an animal shelter? Keeping accounts? Ridiculous!”
Within ten minutes, ledger pages were shredded and flying everywhere.
The plush mattress stuffed with human fat was torn open, greasy oil oozing out.
These monsters were tortured to death in life. Their souls had already been fractured.
All the little monsters clung to existence only by Boss Bella’s protective aura.
Now, under players’ attack, they were utterly defenseless.
Suddenly, Sophie, who had been gleefully slaughtering monsters, froze. Her face drained of color.
“Full alert! Danger level just spiked to 5S!”
The players, lost in their slaughter, turned pale and trembled.
“How? This isn’t even a designated monster zone!”
“Danger level 5S?! King’s hardest clear was only 3S!”
The bullet comments exploded again.
[To be honest, isn’t those players kinda cruel? Those little monsters look so pitiful.]
[Oh please, don’t tell me you’re sympathizing with monsters?]
[OMG stop arguing! How did the plot derail? The female lead hasn’t even started fighting bosses yet! How is this a 5S death trap?!]
An eerie, chilling female voice drifted closer:
“Sadie, darling, guess what I brought?”
“Those idiot players’ filthy souls! Perfect for making soul-enriching treats for our babies! Extra for my Polly!”
Ms. Pen materialized like water, her skin unnaturally pale, her voice hollow and terrifying.
She stopped mid-sentence.
She took in the wrecked shelter, the fleeing monsters, and her beloved Polly lying in pieces on the floor.
Then, a shriek from her made every player clap their hands over their ears in terror.
“Ms. Pen? An SSS-tier monster here?”
“Sophie, you said this place was safe!”
“What do we do?! I haven’t even started playing and I’m gonna die?”
Seeing her meticulously kept ledger torn to shreds pushed Ms. Pen over the edge.
“WHO DID THIS?!”
The shelter plunged into darkness. Ms. Pen’s terrifying, distorted face appeared before every player.
Screams filled the room.
But before she could unleash her fury, the door opened again.
Marry, in embroidered slippers, held a pair of still-twitching eyeballs, calling into the room.
“Sadie! Great haul today!”
“All the grooms’ eyeballs are here! For Bella’s canned food…”
Close behind, Mr. Wraith carried a bloody head in one hand and a still-beating heart in the other.
“Sadie! Dinner for our Beagle King!… What the fucking hell!”
Baby Ghoul, her face a sickly purple, gurgled with an unnatural sound, proudly showing off the bloodied tongues she’d collected in her bottle.
“For Bella… for Woof-Woof…”
They took in the scene and let out simultaneous cries of anguish.
“Who did this?! Who kicked over the cat bowl?!”
“This cat litter is made from ground human skulls!”
“All our sweet monsters are shattered! And Sadie is bleeding?!”
“I… Bella… Woof-Woof…”
These were all SSS-tier bosses or higher. Some male players already wet themselves.
Sophie hid in Brenda’s arms, sobbing.
The wrath of monsters shook the shelter.
The players were subjected to Ms. Pen’s curse, Marry’s bloody vengeance, Mr. Wraith’s relentless pursuit, and Baby Ghoul’s chilling cries, one after another.
Screams echoed endlessly.
Finally, Sophie frantically used her most precious 3S item, the Mirror of Truth and Lies, to escape.
She was deathly pale, crying delicate tears.
“Please, Monster Lords and Ladies, forgive our intrusion.”
“We’ll leave immediately! Spare us!”
The Mirror’s holy light momentarily blinded Ms. Pen, whose breath chilled player’s spines.
“You wreck my shelter? Destroy my work? Torment my monsters?”
“And think I’ll let you go?”
“Never! Unless you become nourishment for thousands of tormented souls!”
Sophie cried hysterically but stepped forward, begging desperately.
The bullet comments went wild.
[OMG SSS and 4S bosses all together! I feel haunted through the screen!]
[My girl! My heart breaks for her! Author, let our sweet Sophie charm those Bosses too!]
[The female lead is terrified but still shields everyone! So brave!]
[Holy crap, if the male lead doesn’t show, this is bad.]
My mother looked resolute, stroking Sophie’s head protectively.
“Don’t be afraid. No matter what, you’re Auntie’s precious girl.”
My nose inexplicably stung.
My father gazed lovingly at Sophie, then looked at me crumpled on the floor, his expression unreadable.
Suddenly, he grabbed my hair and dragged me towards the cluster of monsters at the door.
“Great Monsters! I offer this one to you! Spare us, please!”
“If not, a life for a life! Take hers for Sophie’s!”
“Sophie is a good girl with a hard life! She only joined this game to cure her illness!”
“Please, show mercy, spare her!”
My eyes stung.
Next life, I won’t be the cannon fodder for some ridiculous female lead!
Ms. Pen didn’t speak. She looked at me with pity, wiping a tear from my eye.
Stan Carter, thinking she agreed, grinned triumphantly.
“Great Monster! Do what you want with my daughter. I permit it!”
“She’s a bad seed! Send her to the deepest hell! Boil her in oil, throw her on spikes, burn her! Anything!”
My tears flowed harder, washing away Ms. Pen’s premium corpse oil hand cream.
Under players’ expectant gazes, Ms. Pen gathered me into her arms, humming a spectral lullaby.
Stan and Brenda stared, dumbfounded. Sophie looked utterly confused.
Marry, adjusting her crimson robes freshly dyed with human blood, spoke in a chillingly sweet voice,
“Dare to bully our precious Sadie? You deserve the deepest hell!”
Stan gaped, stammering, “You know her?!”
But the monsters offered no further explanation. They gathered their power for a final assault.
The terror level of every player present hit 100% C guaranteed death!
The frantic bullet comments froze mid-sentence.
[So scary… first time seeing so many bosses…]
[That girl was also an NPC? No way!]
[Getting mobbed by monsters means instant annihilation, right? Author, are you abandoning your female lead?!]
Every monster present radiated fury. The clueless players were surrounded, waiting for death.
“Dare hurt Sadie? Dare you play a chess game with me!”
“Dare wreck our place? Marry me first!”
“Hold on! Let me eat their souls first! Hey, why didn’t anyone call Skinwalker? They adore this little volunteer!”
“And Boss… huh? Why isn’t he here yet?”
Sophie paled, breaking down completely.
She threw every item she had at them, uselessly.
Suddenly, a look of hope crossed her face. She pressed her last item.
A Signal Flare!
Just as her soul was about to be torn apart, a figure appeared before her.
The bullet comments went crazy.
[I knew it! King to the rescue!]
[Those monsters scared my girl! Male lead, teach them a lesson! I believe in your plot armor!]
[Oh my, King is so fucking hot! Told you the female lead wouldn’t die! Chill!]
