Chrismas Eve, my mom announced her godson was coming over for the holiday visit.

Seeing my boyfriend sitting in the living room, I froze solid.

Mom snapped, Well? Aren’t you going to say hello to your brother?

My face did something complicated. I forced the words out through gritted teeth, Merry Chrismas… bro.

Chrismas Eve, Mom yanked me out of bed, babbling about her godson coming to visit and how I needed to look presentable, not embarrass her.

Buried under my comforter, my brain, still shrouded in sleep fog, struggled to form a coherent thought.

Godson? What godson?

I mumbled something unintelligible and drifted back into oblivion.

That is, until a relentless pounding on my bedroom door shocked me awake. I stumbled out, bleary-eyed, my hair a spectacular bird’s nest, still clad in my ridiculously childish Peppa Pig pajamas.

Yawning, I shuffled into the living room, my gaze casually swept the living roomand then snapping back, freezing solid on a familiar figure lounging comfortably on the sofa.

He turned slowly at the sound.

It was Liam.

My mother shot me a look of utter disdain, “For goodness’ sake, Chloe, what are you doing out here looking like that?”

She marched over, plucking disdainfully at my pajama sleeve. “Well? Don’t just stand there gawking! Say hello to your brother!”

My face underwent a complicated series of twitches. I forced the words out through gritted teeth, “Merry Chrismas… bro.”

Liam relaxed back into the sofa, a hint of amusement in his eyes as he looked me over. “And a Merry Chrismas to you too… sis.”

He lingered on the word just a heartbeat too long, loading it with a wealth of unspoken meaning.

I fled back to my room, a wave of utter mortification washing over me.

Every other time Liam had ever seen me, I had been meticulously put togetherperfect hair, flawless makeup, killer outfit.

And now? I was a hot mess express with bedhead and pajamas fit for a toddler.

Perfect. My flawless image? Shattered. Obliterated.

Well, if the damage was done, why fight it? A strange sense of liberation surged through me.

In full self-sabotage mode, I washed my face, pointedly skipped any makeup, threw on a pair of plain white sweats, and stomped back out into the living room.

I plopped down on the sofa opposite him, poured myself a cup of tea with a blank face, pretending he was invisible.

Liam’s gaze shifted from his phone to me, a slight, knowing smirk playing on his lips. “Come sit over here.”

I deliberately ignored him, pulling out my own phone and firing up a mindless game.

“Chloe. His voice was calm but firm this time. Sit. Here.”

I didn’t budge. He wouldn’t dare try anything with my parents right in the next room!

Liam suddenly chuckled, a low, lazy sound that seemed to vibrate through the air between us. “Princess, he drawled. Do I need to come over there and get you myself?”

I shot him a death glare but reluctantly scooted across the sofa.

The moment I was within reach, his arm snaked around my waist, pulling me firmly against his side. He leaned in, his lips capturing mine in a swift, claiming kiss.

My eyes flew wide open. I smacked his chest with both hands, breaking the kiss. “Liam! Are you insane? My parents are in the kitchen!”

Liam, it seemed, just needed a taste, a quick fix to soothe the ache of missing me.

He pulled back, resting his forehead against my shoulder, a low laugh rumbling in his chest. “Someone’s got quite the morning grump, Princess.”

I shoved him away, my expression deadpan. “You better have a damn good explanation for this little surprise.”

A beat of silence passed. No response from Liam. I frowned, turning my head to look at him.

He was sprawled lazily against the cushions, his eyes dancing with unconcealed amusement as he watched me.

“W-what are you looking at?” I asked, turning away sharply, a sudden panic flaring. Did I really look that different without makeup?

He leaned in suddenly, his fingers gently ruffling my messy bun. The few pins holding it up gave way, and my hair tumbled down around my shoulders.

A soft, genuine smile touched his lips, his voice warm and unbearably indulgent. “Just looking at my adorable girlfriend.”

He paused, his gaze sweeping over my face with an intensity that made my breath catch. I always thought you looked amazing all done up. Turns out, natural is even better.”

First time Liam complimented me like that, actually seeming to like the bare-faced look? My heart did a backflip.

“Really?”The word escaped in a hopeful whisper as I launched myself into his arms, looking up at him, my eyes shining.

Liam looked utterly charmed by his girlfriend. He wanted nothing more than to kiss her senseless right then and there, but the muffled sounds of her parents moving about in the kitchen served as a potent reminder of their surroundings.

He simply held me tighter, his smile answering everything. “What do you think, silly?”

“Chloe! Get in here and help with the food!” My mother’s voice sliced through the air from the kitchen made me jump.

Liam’s shoulders shook with silent laughter. I glared at him and trudged reluctantly towards the kitchen.

Dinner was a spectacular display of parental favoritism. My mother fawned over Liam as if he were the prodigal son returned, piling his plate with a carefully curated mountain of delicacies while my own plate looked pathetically barren in comparison.

I stared mournfully at the mountain of food on his plate, green with envy.

“Liam, sweetie, did Chloe cause you any trouble back at school?” Mom asked sweetly.

“Not at all, Mom.” Liam replied, his expression the picture of innocence. “Chloe was always remarkably well-behaved.”

I slammed my fork down. “My mom! Not yours!”

One of Liam raised an eyebrow. “Your mom isn’t my mom?”

The subtle implication in his words made the tips of my ears burn crimson instantly.

Mom smacked the back of my head lightly. “What is wrong with you? Liam’s my godson! He doesn’t like ‘godmother,’ he calls me Mom! Got a problem with that?”

I shot a desperate, pleading look toward Dad, who merely shrugged in helpless surrender.

I muttered, pouting. “I didn’t even know you had a godson you apparently prefer over your actual daughter.”

“Oh? And who was it, pray tell, who used to follow Liam around everywhere, chirping ‘brother, brother’?”

“I have no memory of that!”

“With your memory? Eat, sleep, repeat? I’m not surprised!”

Hmph. Some mother she was.

Mom pulled out a Chrismas gift for Liam.

I snatched it from her hand and stormed off to my room in a fit of pique.

“That child…” I heard Mom sigh.

“It’s fine, Mom. Let Chloe have it.” Liam’s calm voice followed me.

“Nonsense! You wait right there. I’ll get you a better one.”

Mom disappeared into her room and returned moments later, pressing a significantly bigger gift into Liam’s hands.

“Here, sweetheart. This is from Mom.”

“Thanks, Mom.” Liam’s smile was genuine and warm.

As relatives started arriving for Chrismas visits.

Mom, worried her godson might be bored, patted his shoulder affectionately. “Liam, honey, go hang out with Chloe. I’ll handle the guests.”

“Sure thing, Mom.” Liam pocketed his phone and made his way toward my room.

Cool, pale fingers rapped lazily on the door.

“Come in, it’s open,” I called out.

Liam pushed the door open and quietly turned the lock behind him.

After a moment of silence, I turned to face him.

He was leaning against my bookshelf, idly flipping through a novel.

I sat up straight, fixing him with my most serious look. “Perfect timing. Explain. Now.”

Liam lazily lifted his gaze, a familiar smirk playing on his lips, “Princess, did you really think I’d haul luggage for just any freshman? Or magically appear whenever some random girl found herself in trouble?”

I scoffed. Liam, with his princely demeanor, barely lifted a finger for himself. The idea of him voluntarily playing knight in shining armor for a stranger was absurd.

“So… Mom asked you to look out for me? That’s why you were so… attentive?”

Liam put the book back and closed the distance between us, leaning in until I had to arch backward. Our eyes locked.

Our eyes locked. Liam chuckled softly. “Why so tense? It’s your house. I’m not going to eat you.”

I glared, pushing against his chest with my red-polished nails.

A gift fell from inside his jacket.

“Mom gave you this?” I pulled it out, my expression instantly morphing into one of pure betrayal.

“Seriously? Her precious godson gets big one, and her actual daughter gets only a small one? Unbelievable!”

Liam’s arm suddenly clamped around my waist, pulling me flush against him. I had to tilt my head back to maintain eye contact.

He smirked. “Mine is yours, isn’t it?” His voice dropped to a whisper. “At first, it was because your mom asked me to look out for you. Later… it was because I wanted to look out for my future wife.”

I looped my arms around his neck, my eyes crinkling into a smile. “So the great Liam was plotting this all along?”

His lips brushed against mine in a soft kiss, then moved to my ear, “My mom taught me, if you find someone you like, lock it down fast. Otherwise, someone else snatches them away, and then where would you be?”

“So… what exactly did you like about me?”I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

“Your complete lack of situational awareness? How you manage to lose everything? Your legendary sense of direction?” He laughed softly. “I liked you, and you were completely oblivious! You actually thought I was into your roommate and gave me her number!”

My lip twitched. “You have serious issues if you fell for my flaws.”

I reached up, intending to mess up his perfectly styled hair, but he suddenly released me.

I tumbled backwards onto the bed with a soft gasp.

The distinct sound of a key turning in the lock echoed from the door.

Panicked, I grabbed Liam’s arm and yanked him under the covers with me just as the door swung open.

A woman stood there, dressed to the nines, arms crossed as she leaned against the doorframe.

I glared. “Bianca! Ever heard of knocking? Looking for a fight?”

“Ohhh, touchy!” she drawled, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Did I interrupt something, cousin? Hiding a man in here?”

“None of your business! Get out! And shut the door!” I snapped, my heart pounding as if I’d been caught red-handed.
