Five years ago, my sister and I were brought into the Hawthorne family like two accessories.

There were no wedding dresses, no vows—only two shameful contracts hidden from the light.

I became Liam Hawthorne’s nominal wife, while my sister ended up as the wife beside Liam’s brother, Lucas.

Now Grandma is seriously ill, and her only wish is to attend our wedding.

To make her wish come true, I knelt in front of the Hawthorne mansion for three days and three nights until Lucas finally agreed.

On the wedding day, when it was the time for the groom to take the stage, both brothers vanished.

Grandma was so upset, that she fainted on her seat.

We held her tightly, crying until we broke down.

Fighting back my grief, I called Liam—over a dozen times before he finally picked up.

When he heard my trembling voice, he snapped impatiently, “you crying gain? Using Grandma as an excuse every time—aren’t you tired of this? Chloe scalded her hand. I need to take her to the hospital. Can you stop causing drama right now?”

He hung up before I could explain.

And he blocked my number.

My sister, hearing what happened, immediately called Lucas, begging her husband to come to the venue.

But all she got was a furious outburst, “Why does your grandma always get sick whenever something happens to Chloe? Haven’t you and your sister had enough of acting? I’m going to buy medicine for Chloe. Don’t bother me again.”

The call ended abruptly.

At the same moment, Grandma stopped breathing in my arms.

The wedding turned into Grandma’s funeral.

After barely coping with our grief and handling Grandma’s arrangements,

we sent the Hawthorne brothers divorce papers.

But they showed up at our door with their manipulative darling.

Chloe!

“Fine, you can divorce—but leave your grandma’s jade bracelet. Chloe likes it.”

By the time we finished Grandma’s funeral arrangements, it was already 1 a.m.

My sister and I returned together to the Hawthorne villa, finally helping each other out of those hideous wedding dresses.

By now, it had been over a day since we sent the divorce papers—still no response.

How many times had the Hawthorne brothers ignored us?

Even divorce had to take a backseat to their precious “angel”–Chloe.

For five years, whenever my sister or I were alone with them, Chloe would “coincidentally” have some emergency—a light bulb burning out, a clogged sink.

Any ordinary problem became a catastrophe if it happened to Chloe, at least in the Hawthorne brothers’ eyes.

My sister had asked me many times why this kept happening.

At first, I argued and even fought with them, but eventually I understood:

From the day we entered the Hawthorne family, our roles were already settled.

Quietly, we packed our bags, including the jade bracelet Grandma left us.

Every item held memories, but also reminded us of the new life we were about to start.

Just as we were dragging our suitcases toward the door, the lock turned.

The Hawthorne brothers walked in, followed by none other than Chloe.

Their cheerful conversation died the moment they saw us.

Liam frowned impatiently.

“What kind of game are you playing now? It was just a wedding—we can do it again later.”

He looked at my red, exhausted eyes and grew even more annoyed.

“If Chloe hadn’t been making herbal medicine for your overly demanding grandma, she wouldn’t have burned her hand.

I should be the one angry here, not you. Enough already—don’t push it.”

My sister trembled with anger, squeezing my hand tightly.

Lucas didn’t even glance our way.

He bent down, took out Chloe’s slippers from the shoe rack, knelt on one knee, and gently helped her to change.

Yes, she had her own slippers here.

And the usually arrogant younger Hawthorne brother willingly knelt to change her shoes.

What a ridiculous scene.

Chloe glanced at our suitcases and pitifully looked at the brothers.

“Liam, Lucas, I’m so sorry… It’s all my fault. I ruined your wedding.”

Then she turned to us with a fake smile.

“Emily, why are you moving your luggage out? I’m really sorry—I just wanted to make some herbal soup for Grandma and accidentally burned my hand.

I was so scared, and besides the brothers, I don’t really have any other friends. But they made a big deal out of it and took me to the hospital.

You’re not mad at me, are you?”

I looked at the tiny band-aid on her finger and suddenly felt how pathetic my sister and I had been.

“Yeah, what a terrible burn,” I said coldly.

Liam’s face darkened instantly.

“Watch your tone. Apologize to Chloe now. She got hurt making soup for your grandma—where are your manners?”

I glanced at the thermal container in his hand.

I hadn’t planned to engage, but remembering how Grandma died in my arms, I couldn’t hold back.

“I’ve got no manners? Still better than someone without shame. Let’s get divorced.”

My sister looked firmly at Lucas.

“I want a divorce too.”

Both brothers froze.

Lucas stared in disbelief.

“What did you say? Divorce? Who do you think you are to ask for that?”

I ignored him and tried to leave with my sister.

Lucas roughly knocked my hand away, grabbed my sister by the collar, his eyes burning with anger.

“Are you insane?”

“Chloe just got back—she has no friends here! Was it wrong to help her? What gives you the right to divorce me?”

He kicked my sister’s suitcase hard.

“I said stay!”

Seeing the box with Grandma’s remains, I rushed over and shoved him away wildly.

“Get away from that! Don’t touch it!”

Just then, Liam’s icy voice came from behind.

“Emily, there’s a limit to throwing tantrums. Don’t test me.”

I ignored him, carefully checking the suitcase.

The brothers exchanged a look.

Lucas grabbed me by the neck and dragged me away, pinning my sister down at the same time.

Liam slowly bent down, and opened the suitcase.

“Let’s see what you’re so nervous about. Stealing from the Hawthornes?”

He dumped the contents on the floor, scuffed them with his shoe, and smirked.

“You treat this junk like treasure? Who are you trying to fool?”

“It was a fake wedding anyway—what does it matter if it was delayed?”

“You’re making a scene over nothing, clinging to these rags. You like trash? Fine.”

He pulled out a lighter, lit it, and tossed it onto Grandma’s remains.

Flames burst up immediately.

I screamed hysterically, “Stop!”

But Lucas held me tightly, and I couldn’t break free.

My sister bit Lucas’s arm hard—he yelled and let go—and she rushed over desperately to put out the fire.

But it was too late.

All the remains was a charred wooden box containing the jade bracelets Grandma meant for us.

Chloe saw this, put down the thermal container, and hurried over.

“Liam didn’t mean it—it was an accident. They’re just old clothes—you can buy new ones.”

My sister, trembling as she held the box, suddenly found strength.

She shoved Chloe down, grabbed her hair, and slapped her face repeatedly.

The room echoed with screams and crying.

Liam’s eyes turned furious.

He yanked my sister’s hair and slammed her head against the wall.

I screamed, my voice shaking with panic, but could only watch as my sister went limp.

Within minutes, Grandma’s remains were burned, and my sister was unconscious.

My already broken heart shattered completely.

I should’ve realized sooner:

my sister and I were just tools to keep their family satisfied.

The only one they truly loved was Chloe.

But it was too late.

Liam wiped his hands disgustedly with a silk handkerchief, tossed my sister aside, and rushed to comfort Chloe.

Lucas finally released me and also hurried over to Chloe.

He didn’t even glance at my sister.

Watching the brothers fuss over Chloe, I felt like my five years of effort were utterly worthless.

I went over and held my unconscious sister, no longer hoping for anything—just wanting to leave this place as soon as possible.

But Chloe wasn’t done with us.

She sobbed, “I’m sorry, Lucas… I just wanted to comfort Olivia. I didn’t expect her to react like this.

I wonder what was in that box that meant so much to her…”

Hearing this, Lucas walked over and tried to snatch the box from my sister’s arms.

I tried to stop him, but he was too strong.

He took it and handed it to Chloe like a prize.

I begged desperately, “Please… give it back!”

But all three ignored me.

Chloe opened the box, saw two ordinary jade bracelets, and curled her lip scornfully.

Then she let go.

The box and bracelets fell to the floor, shattering to pieces.

I stopped begging.

My eyes turned bloodred.

In that moment, I lost control of my rage and grief.

I grabbed a teacup from nearby and threw it at Chloe’s head.
