At the engagement party that came three years too late, I was publicly called out by my fiancée’s trusted butler.
“Mr. Liam, you’re still not sincere enough. Wait another three years for Ms. Sophia.”
He took out a contract, just like he had before.
This time, I didn’t accept it. Instead, I turned to Sophia Greene and asked, “Is this your idea again?”
Sophia was unsteady from the wine, then shook her head with a laugh. “I didn’t plan it, but I think Jacob did the right thing.”
“He would never hurt me!”
Seeing how readily she sided with Jacob.
Seeing how careless she seemed.
I laughed at myself.
Being a doormat never pays. Guess I’ll just go back to being the young master.
…
“Liam Murphy!”
“Stop dawdling and sign the paper.”
Jacob sneered, urging me in a commanding tone.
Anyone listening would think I owed him a billion bucks.
I took the document, crumpled it, and threw it in his face. “Know your place.”
Then, ignoring Jacob’s furious expression, I turned to Sophia. “I waited three years for this? Even your butler thinks he can walk all over me.”
Everyone stared at Sophia, waiting for her response.
But she just rolled her eyes. “Jacob has been with my family since he was ten. He’s been by my side building our career abroad these past three years. He’s my most important confidant.”
“He’s just looking out for me. It’s only three more years—why are you making such a big deal of it?”
Everyone was stunned.
Three years, then another three.
How many six-year chunks does a person even have?
My heart felt pierced, a sharp pain spreading through my chest. Sophia’s promise from three years ago echoed in my mind.
She had said, “Liam, wait for me. When I come back, the first thing I’ll do is marry you!”
She had said, “Jacob always upsets you, and he almost got you killed. I’ll keep him in line these three years.”
But she kept none of those promises. Instead, she protected Jacob even more.
That morning, when I went to pick her up at the airport, I ran toward her excitedly, wanting to hold her.
But Jacob blocked me.
“Ms. Sophia’s public image is important now.”
“Besides, anyone who wants physical contact with her has to undergo full sanitization.”
Sophia didn’t say a word to defend me. She allowed it.
Jacob then pushed further—while I was in the restroom, he took my car and left with Sophia.
Later, I confronted her angrily. She said, “Jacob has been protecting me since he was ten. He only wants what’s best for me.”
“Why are you making such a big deal out of it?”
“Don’t make trouble before the engagement party.”
For the sake of the party, I held back.
But then this happened.
Jacob turned his anger into a smug grin, puffing out his chest. “If you don’t sign, it means you’re not sincere.”
“Don’t forget—there are tons of men who want to pursue Ms. Sophia now.”
He thought he could keep acting out because Sophia had his back. He thought I’d keep tolerating it and sign that humiliating document.
But I didn’t.
Smack!
I slapped him across the face. “You also want to pursue her, don’t you? That’s why you’re stirring up trouble.”
“You hit me?”
Jacob was stunned. Then his fists clenched, audibly cracking. He looked ready to strike back.
Bang!
Sophia slammed the table and shot to her feet. She pulled out a gun and aimed it between my eyes.
“What is wrong with you?”
“Hurting Jacob is the same as hurting me!”
“Apologize to him. Now!”
Three sharp commands, leaving no room for argument.
The whole room held its breath.
Jacob smirked, thinking I’d finally back down.
But the next moment, I laughed. “Go ahead, pull the trigger. Let everyone see how you made your fiancé bleed at his own engagement party … all for a butler.”
Sophia’s hand trembled. She slowly lowered the gun. “You know Jacob only said those things to provoke you because he cares about me.”
“But hitting him was too far.”
“So apologize!”
She gave orders like a queen passing judgement. Compared to three years ago, she was a completely different person.
All her warmth was gone. So was any sense of mutual understanding.
“Apologize?”
“Don’t forget—he owes me his life!”
I stared straight at Sophia. “Three years ago, he picked a fight that got you both trapped in an abandoned warehouse. I took eight stab wounds saving you!”
“And he mixed mango juice into my drink knowing I’m allergic. I went into anaphylactic shock.”
My voice was calm, but everyone heard.
They all shot Jacob looks that said, “You ungrateful piece of work.”
Besides those two big incidents, Jacob had made countless smaller mistakes—shattering my laptop, losing my research, leaking client lists while drunk.
Seeing this, Jacob quickly switched tactics. He grabbed the gun from Sophia and pressed it to his own temple.
“Don’t blame Ms. Sophia!”
“I’ll take responsibility. You want my life? Fine, I’ll give it back!”
Sophia’s eyes had shown a flicker of guilt, but now she rushed to stop him, scowling at me.
“You’re bringing up ancient history? Are you trying to push Jacob to his death? Is that what you want?”
She had really changed.
Those words felt like a physical chill, settling deep in my bones.
Jacob took the performance further. He snatched a fruit knife from the table and stabbed it through his palm.
“Mr. Liam.”
“Let’s consider the debt repaid. Now will you sign?”
Blood gushed out instantly.
Sophia’s eyes widened. She tore off part of her dress to wrap Jacob’s hand, then turned and screamed at me, “Look what you’ve become!”
“So aggressive, so unreasonable!”
“Why can’t you be more considerate like Jacob?”
Her glare was fiercer than ever.
As if she wished I were the one who bleeding on the floor!
But from start to finish, I hadn’t forced Jacob to do anything.
She and Jacob were the ones pushing me.
She was the one who had changed.
Yet she blamed me?
Hadn’t I considered her enough?
Forget about taking a knife for her.
Just look at our relationship: she said she hated apples, despite them being my favorite fruit since childhood, I never bought one again.
She wanted home-cooked meals? I made whatever she craved.
She forgot her documents? I drove through a storm to deliver them.
And those three years I waited.
A long-distance relationship.
She was always busy, barely calling once a month.
But I never wavered.
How many people could do that? Was that not sincere enough?
“Alright, alright, it’s the engagement party. Let’s all calm down.”
Someone tried to smooth things over.
But Sophia wouldn’t drop it. She demanded again, “You’ve gone too far. Apologize to Jacob now.”
“Otherwise, who knows how you’ll act in front of me later?”
I just stare at her.
Words failed me. Suddenly, everything about us felt like a joke.
“Say something!”
“Can’t you see Jacob is bleeding? Is apologizing really that hard?”
Her words echoed familiar in my mind.
When I was bleeding out from eight stab wounds, she had yelled the same thing at Jacob three years ago.
But now she used it against me.
When I still didn’t speak, Sophia snapped. She grabbed a wine glass and hurled it at me.
“Apologize!”
“Or forget about marrying me! I’ll make you regret it!”
The glass shattered.
Blood trickled down my forehead to the tip of my nose.
The crowd gasped. Whispers spread through the room.
Only then did Sophia realize she’d gone too far. She froze for a good ten seconds, biting her lip nervously.
“Ms. Sophia.”
“Maybe let it go. No need to go this far. This is all my fault—I’ll apologize to Mr. Liam.”
Right then, Jacob suddenly took responsibility, a hint of mockery flashing in his eyes.
How cunning! Pretending to mediate, but really pouring fuel on the fire.
“You’re the sensible one. But I said what I said, and I won’t take it back.”
Sophia praised him, then looked at me, her tone softening slightly. “Liam, you know how I am. If I’m happy, everything works out.”
I knew that, of course. For five years, I’d worked hard to keep her happy.
But what about my feelings?
Did they not matter?
I took a deep breath and laid it out for her: “Today, you have to choose: him or me.”
Instantly, the hope in Sophia’s eyes vanished, replaced by disappointment, anger, and finally that superior queen-like attitude.
“Liam Murphy!”
“No signing, no apology? Fine, spend the rest of your life alone!”
Then she grabbed Jacob and stormed off.
He glanced back at me with a victorious smirk.
This time, I had well and truly lost. Watching her walk away, I murmured, “From today on, I have nothing more to do with Sophia Greene.”
“It’s over.”
Sophia paused mid-step but didn’t look back.
The room erupted in chatter.
No one expected it to end like this.
After the guests left, the hotel manager hurried over. “Mr. Liam, your father is on the phone.”
He handed me the mobile while dabbing the blood from my forehead.
“I heard you and Sophia had a falling out?”
My father asked.
“Yeah.”
“I don’t want to be with her anymore.”
I nodded.
For the first time, when it came to Sophia, my voice was calm.
“My boy, you loved her so much. Would you give up so easily? If you break up, I’ll withdraw all support. Sophia will lose everything.”
My father’s tone was dead serious. “So, I’ll give you one night to think it over.”
“If you walk away, then walk away completely. No turning back.”
Then he hung up.
I couldn’t blame him for thinking that way.
I’d spoiled Sophia too much, I couldn’t stand to see her unhappy.
I’d rather bear the hurt myself.
Just to see her smile.
I shook my head, pushing those thoughts away. I asked the hotel to keep serving and invited the manager and staff to join me.
Soon, Sophia’s father, Robert Greene, still in his hospital gown, rushed into the hotel.
I thought he came from the hospital to comfort me.
But instead, he started scolding.
“Liam Murphy!”
“Have you lost your mind?”
“You waited three years—what’s three more? Isn’t my granddaughter worth it?”
