Chloe, my best friend, went to college in the same city as me.
I studied at a top-tier university, while she went to a private community college.
During our freshman year, she moved in with some guy with blond hair, yet telling her parents she was renting a place with me.
To support her lazy, good-for-nothing boyfriend, she asked her family for money on the excuse of helping me out with my living expenses…
When her parents found a positive pregnancy test in their bathroom, Chloe pinned it on me. Her parents screamed at me to stay away from her and not to be a bad influence.
When she took out an online loan later to get an abortion, and the debt calls reached her parents, she told them I had pressured her into it.
Finally, her parents showed up at my university.
They waved their phone in my face—full of loan shark calls and texts—and beat me up right in front of everyone.
I ended up dying from blood loss.
When I opened my eyes again, I had gone back in time—when my bestie’s parents were coming for me.
“Buzz… Buzz… Buzz…”
My phone kept vibrating like my death alarm.
Seeing her parents’ caller ID, I realized I was really reborn.
“Luna, your phone’s blowing up—you gonna get that?”
My roommate reminded me.
I shook my head. Chloe’s parents were impossible to reason with.
In my past life, Chloe and I were high school classmates. We stayed together all the time. Everyone saw us as inseparable besties.
But Chloe hated studying. All she cared about was having fun. So, whenever something went wrong about her study, she’d always make me take the fall.
Back then in high school, it was all just little stuff, so I didn’t mind too much.
After the college entrance exams, she picked a school in the same city as me.
I got into a top university. She went to a private community college.
I thought not being at the same school would mean I could finally cut ties with her.
But as she refused to live on campus and secretly rented a place with some blond guy, she lied to her parents she was living with me.
To support her deadbeat boyfriend, she asked her parents for money, saying it was to help me out with my expenses…
Because I’d taken the blame for her so many times in high school, her parents already considered me as a bad influence, corrupting their daughter.
Over the summer, her mom found a positive pregnancy test in their bathroom, and Chloe immediately said it was mine.
Her parents threatened me to stay away from her through a phone call because of it.
After that, I decided to keep my distance from Chloe, not wanting any more drama.
But right after sophomore year started, since Chloe didn’t have the money for abortion, she asked her parents for 10 grand, using me as an excuse again.
They refused without hesitation.
Eventually, as her belly started to show, she panicked and took out an online loan.
When she couldn’t pay it back, she told her family I had pressured and tricked her into taking the loan for me.
In my past life, when her parents got those threatening debt calls and texts, they demanded I pay back the loan and compensate Chloe for “emotional damages.”
I tried to explain it had nothing to do with me.
They didn’t listen and showed up at my school.
In the end, they beat me until I bled out and died.
They didn’t regret killing me, thinking I got what I deserved.
Now that I was living a second time, I refused to have anything to do with them.
I silenced my phone and booked a flight for tomorrow to another state. I planned to pack up and leave before they could show up.
But the next day, while I was still packing in my dorm, the door suddenly burst open.
BAM! The door shook violently, barely hanging on its hinges.
I jumped out of my skin.
When I looked up, I was face to face with Chloe’s mom, furious and ready to explode.
“You little trash! How dare you scam Chloe into taking out loans! Give us back our money!”
“My Chloe used to be such a sweet, obedient girl! Look what’s happened since she got involved with you!”
“She kept saying her monthly allowance wasn’t enough. I had to pressure her before she finally admitted she’d been giving all her money to you!”
“You took advantage of her kindness, her soft heart! And when she had no more money to give, you tricked her into online loans! You’re disgusting!”
I froze.
Last time, her parents showed up two days later.
This time, since I hadn’t answered their endless calls, they came two days early.
Her mom charged at me.
“Luna, who do you think you are, treating my Chloe like this?!”
Cursing, she grabbed my hair and yanked me up from the floor.
I tried to fight back, but Chloe’s mom worked construction—her hands were strong from tying rebar all day. I couldn’t break free.
The pain in my scalp grew worse, and I remembered last time when she’d torn out chunks of my hair and skin, blood dripping everywhere.
There was a pair of scissors on the desk—I’d been using them to trim loose threads. But now, they’d serve a different purpose.
Just as I grabbed them to defend myself, someone suddenly rushed in and shoved Chloe’s mom off me.
Caught off guard, she actually stumbled back.
It was the dorm’s security guard, Betty.
I often saved empty bottles and boxes for her, so we’d gotten pretty close over time.
“What do you think you’re doing, barging into a dorm and attacking a student? Get out now, or I’m calling campus security!”
Betty shielded me tightly, guarding me from further attacks.
Chloe’s mom lashed out:
“You old hag! Who do you think you are? I’m here to get my daughter back!”
“Move, or I’ll beat you too!”
Then she slapped Betty hard across the face.
Betty fell to the floor, dizzy and seeing stars.
Seizing the moment, Chloe’s mom lunged for my hair again, reaching for me with rage in her eyes.
The trauma from my past-life beating haunted me.
Without hesitating, I raised the hand holding the scissors to protect my head.
Slash!
She ran right into them—her palm now had a deep, bleeding gash.
“Ah! You little b**ch! You cut me?!”
Her eyes red with rage. I knew things were about to get worse. I bolted out of the room.
The room was small. She was bigger and stronger than me. If I stayed, I’d only get more hurt.
I rushed down the stairwell.
I’d left in such a hurry, bringing nothing with me but my phone.
But as soon as I ran out of the dorm, a man’s fist slammed into me.
I fell hard onto the pavement, my lip split and bleeding.
Chloe’s mom caught up, shouting to the man across from me,
“Darling, it’s her! Beat her up! She stabbed me! We can do whatever we want to her—go all out! Better if she dies!”
Chloe’s dad was 6’2″, all muscle from working construction. One punch from him made my vision go black.
I tried to fight back, but I was no match.
His fists and kicks rained down on me.
Luckily, campus security showed up fast.
Four guards worked together to pull Chloe’s dad and mom off me.
I lay on the ground, still trying to catch my breath.
Struggling in guards’ grip, Chloe’s mom spat on me and screamed,
“You call yourself a college student? I’ll tell you what—if you don’t bring my daughter back today, this isn’t over!”
As more students gathered around, her eyes gleamed with satisfaction.
“You might be in college, but I’ll make sure you never graduate!”
“You’ve been a bad influence on my Chloe since forever! And now you’ve made her disappear! If you don’t give her back, I’ll tell everyone what you’ve done!”
I swallowed the metallic taste in my mouth, barely able to speak,
“I’ve done nothing wrong. I have nothing to hide. If you keep this up, I’m calling the police. Let them handle it.”
Chloe’s mom went full Karen.
“Everyone, look! This trash is supposedly here to study, but really she’s out here sleeping around! She’s nothing but cheap garbage!”
“My daughter found out she was pregnant over the summer and made me promise not to tell! And right after school started, she asked my daughter for money—for an abortion!”
“My daughter told me everything! I didn’t give her any, so she made Chloe take out a loan! I got the calls and texts—they’re right here!”
“And now my daughter is missing! I bet she did something to her!”
She waved her phone around, showing everyone her so-called “evidence”.
The gathering crowd turned on me:
“I can’t believe our school has someone like this! How did she even get in?”
“Good grades don’t mean you’re a good person.”
“She should be expelled…”
Only a few people questioned things:
“But don’t you need to be the one to take out a loan? Wouldn’t that girl called Chloe have known what she was signing?”
“No matter what, you can’t just beat someone up…”
Those voices were drowned out by the shouting.
Chloe’s mom yelled that she’d call the police. “Luna! You’re going to pay for what you did! You’ll never graduate!”
