The Calculated Divorce A Vow Woven in Lies

Blurb:

When Emma saw her half-sister Chloe clinging to her husband David at the company’s IPO ribbon-cutting, she knew history was repeating itself. Just like Chloe’s mother stole her mom’s happiness, Chloe was scheming to take Emma’s place as David’s wife. As David’s secretary, Chloe invaded their home—even wearing Emma’s pajamas—while David dismissed Emma’s concerns as pettiness. But Emma had endured enough. She handed David the divorce papers, challenging his false generosity.

After years of patience, Emma’s calm facade shattered when David accused her of paranoia and sided with Chloe over their daughter Lily. Lily, manipulated by Chloe’s bribes, rejected Emma as a mother. Disgusted, Emma walked away—only to discover she was pregnant. Returning home to find Chloe smirking in her pajamas, Emma finalized her decision: this marriage was over.

Fleeing to her mother and stepdad John, Emma confronted the ghosts of her past. With divorce looming, Emma is ready to reclaim her life from Chloe’s treachery and David’s betrayal. Will she protect her unborn child and expose the truth?

On the day the company went public, my half-sister Chloe clung to my husband David as they cut the ribbon together.

I knew she was scheming to take my place.

Just like her mother did to my mom all those years ago.

Chloe was David’s secretary. They’d been practically joined at the hip.

She even walked around our house in my pajamas.

David just shrugged it off when I confronted him. “Why be so petty to your sister?”

So, I handed him the property settlement papers, smiling faintly.

“Let’s divorce. Show me how generous you really are.”

David posted the ribbon-cutting photos on Facebook, with Chloe draped all over him like a devoted wife.

I liked the post and commented:

“Perfect match. Congrats.”

After six years of marriage, it was the first time I’d ever commented on his social media.

Five minutes later, David called, his voice tight with anger.

“Emma, stop being paranoid. It was just work.”

“Why hold your family’s grudges against Chloe? She’s your sister, for God’s sake.”

Hearing that felt like something inside me shattered.

David’s voice dropped to a low, tense tone.

“It’s all in the past. You need to let it go.”

“How can I trust you with Lily if you’re even hostile to your sister?”

Lily was David’s daughter from his first marriage.

As part of our wedding deal, he’d work for the family, and I’d raise the kid.

We’d kept our ends of the bargain, and things had been okay.

My vicious stepmom had locked me in a dog cage when I was young. Ironically, David had learned it and sworn he’d make them pay.

But after hiring Chloe as his secretary, he’d forgotten all about that promise.

He even expected me to let go and play nice.

I didn’t bother arguing. What was the point?

After a long silence, I hung up.

In all our years together, I’d never lost my temper like this. Everyone in our circle envied him for marrying such a patient woman.

So, realizing something was wrong, David cut his workday short and rushed home.

He walked in to find me holding a whip, scolding Lily.

The girl flung herself into his arms, playing the victim.

“Emma tried to hit me, Daddy! Make her leave!”

David wiped her tears, then glared at me.

It wasn’t that he didn’t trust me. He just hated any kind of harsh discipline.

“Can’t you just talk to her?”

Talk? That would be useless.

That afternoon, Lily’s teacher had called to say Lily had hit other kids and called them “bastards”.

That word hit too close to home. Chloe and her mom had always used it for me.

Lily refused to apologize, so I’d grabbed the whip to scare her straight.

Just then, Chloe hurried in, fake-concerned.

“Don’t blame Emma, David. She’s just having a rough day.”

Then she handed a lollipop to Lily.

The girl beamed, sniffing as she took it.

“Daddy, I want Aunt Chloe to be my mom, not that mean lady.”

Chloe was great at bribing people, especially a nine-year-old.

Disgust washed over me.

I tossed the whip at David’s feet and said flatly,

“You deal with her. I’m done.”

I fought the nausea down and left the house. Then I stopped at a pharmacy.

Surprisingly, the check revealed me to be pregnant.

When I got back, Chloe was lounging on the couch in my pajamas, smirking.

“Lily cried all over my clothes. David told me to change into these.”

I gave her a cold look.

“Like mother, like daughter. Both love stealing what isn’t theirs.”

Chloe’s eyes darted away, and she faked sobbing, playing the victim well.

Soon, David came and shouted in a irritated voice.

“Emma, do you have to make everyone miserable?”

“It’s just pajamas. Why can’t you get along your sister?”

Rubbing my temples, I pulled the property settlement from my bag.

“Let’s divorce.”

This marriage had bored me for ages.

Showing up unannounced startled my mom and my stepdad.

John (my stepdad) dropped his fork and rushed out to buy my favorite roast chicken.

Mom noticed my mood instantly.

“Fight with David? All couples have rough patches…”

I cut her off. “Nothing to fight about. We’re getting divorced.”

Mom’s eyes widened.

“Divorce? That’s exactly what that b**ch and her daughter want! I won’t allow it.”

“I’ve warned you David was no good. It is you who insisted marry him anyway. You even agree to raise his kid, wasting your career.”

Suddenly, she clutched her chest, sweating heavily.

Her old condition was acting up. I rushed to get her medicine, and she slowly recovered.

Years ago, Mom had been framed by Chloe’s mom and driven to suicide. John saved her.

After that near-death surgery, her health never fully recovered.

Back then, not wanting her to worry, I’d picked David from a pile of blind date profiles — a divorced man with a kid.

Mom couldn’t understand. She’d begged me to reconsider.

“Emma, being a stepmom is hard enough, but you agreed not to have your own children?”

“This man has nothing special.”

But I’d insisted, telling her I’d marry no one else.

While my family waited for my marriage to fail, the opposite happened.

In just a few years, David’s business boomed, making him a rising star.

Everyone wanted a piece of him, including my family.

Chloe schemed her way into the position of his secretary.

She was replaying her mom’s playbook — get pregnant, force a divorce, and take my place.

David knew our history but chose to ignore it, keeping Chloe by his side.

Thanks to Chloe, her stepfather (my birth father) Robert’s failing factory had rebounded under the support of David’s company.

Back to present.

Mom hugged me, sobbing bitterly.

“Why won’t those women leave us alone? They ruined my life, and now yours?”

“If I’d known, I’d have taken them down with me.”
