Three years ago, my sister and I entered into secret marriages with the Sterling brothers.

I married the CEO, Ethan Sterling, and she married the Vice President, Jake Sterling.

Before she died, our mother traveled for three whole days on a Greyhound bus just to see us get married.

I knelt on the cold stone outside the Sterling estate for two days, begging, until Ethan finally agreed to go through with ceremony.

But when the music started, and it was time for him to walk down the aisle, he was nowhere to be found.

Jake didn’t show up either.

The stress was too much for Mom. She collapsed right there in the chapel.

My sister cradled her, sobbing until she completely broke down.

My hands trembled as I called Ethan, he sent me to voicemail three times before finally answering.

His voice was pure static, crackling with impatience,

“You and your mother. I said I’d be there, didn’t I? Sophia cut her hand, It’s a real emergency. And it’s your fault she’s even in this situation! Can you not pick a fight right now?”

Before I could say a word, he hung up.

When I tried to call back, it went straight to voicemail

My sister immediately called her husband, Jake, crying and begging him to come to the venue.

All she got was a barrage of accusations,

“The boy who cried wolf, remember? Every time your precious sister has a problem, your mom is suddenly ot death’s door? I’m done with the theatrics. I’m at the hospital. Don’t waste my time!”

The moment he hung up, our mom took her last breath in my sister’s arms.

Our wedding day became her funeral.

We handled everything ourselves.

Then, we sent the divorce papers to the Sterling brothers.

Ten hours later, there was still no response.

It wasn’t the first time they’d dropped everything for Sophia White.

I just never imagine that even our divorce would take a backseat to their precious “perfect girl.”

Throughout the three years of our marriage, whenever the two of us were alone, Sophia always somehow had an emergency.

A clogged drain, a flickering lightbulb—any minor inconvenience became a catastrophe if it happened to Sophia, at least in the eyes of the Sterling men.

My sister had reached out to me crying countless times.

At first, I fought back. I demanded answers. But I learned my place the hard way..

As my sister and I packed our things and our mom’s old belongings, preparing to leave that house for good, they finally decided to show up.

Sophia followed demurely behind them, waiting expectantly for someone to fetch her slippers.

Their laughter died in their throats when they saw us.

Ethan’s eyes flashed with impatient anger, his voice cold,

“What’s all this? What are you trying to prove now? I already told you what happened.”

He gaze swept over my exhausted face, my re -rimmed eyes.

Growing more annoyed by the second,

“For God’s sake, that wedding was just an act anyway. Sophia gwas bleeding. What did you expect me to do? I’ll make it up to you later, alright?”

“Besides, if your mom hadn’t insisted on coming, she wouldn’t have tried to make that godforsaken soup and hurt herself! I’m not the one blaming you here, so stop with the hysterics. Enough already!”

My sister’s hand tightened around mine, her fingers trembling slightly.

Jake, standing beside him, didn’t even look at us

He was already on his knees, carefully sliding a pair of slippers onto Sophia’s feet.

Sophia’s eyes darted to our suitcases, and she gave Ethan a wounded, pouting look.

“Ethan, please don’t be like that… It’s my fault their day was ruined. I shouldn’t have called you.”

Then she turned her saccharine smile to me,

“Sarah, you really didn’t have to pack your things. I just cut my hand and saw all the blood and I panicked. I never thought they’d overreact and take me to the hospital… You know I don’t really have any anyone else here…”

I stared at the tiny, flesh-colored band-aid wrapped around her finger and a wave of utter, pathetic absurdity washed over me.

All of this, for a paper cut.

“If you don’t mind, maybe I can call you next time? You could be like a big sister I never had! I’ve always thought you were so wonderful!”

A smug, triumphant smile spread across her face.

The memory of my mother’s last, gasping breath flashed before my eyes.

I dug my nails deep into my palms, the sharp pain the only thing keeping me grounded.

“I have a sister. Don’t call me that.”

Ethan’s face darkened a strom gathering in his eyes.

“Watch your tone? Apologize to her. Now! She was trying to help your mother when she got hurt. How can you be so heartless?”

I glanced at the insulated soup container in his hand and let out a cold laugh.

“I’ve spent three years being fair to everyone but myself. I want a divorce. I’m done.”

The angry on his face froze, replaced by sheer disbelief that I was the one saying the word.

My sister, who had been silent until now, found her voice and looked directly at Jake.

“Me too. I want a divorce too.”

We couldn’t spend another second in that suffocating house.

Jake, still crouched by Sophia’s feet, shot up to his full height, his expression one of utter shock.

His voice rose to a dangerous pitch,

“What did you just say?!”

I ignored him. taking my sister’s arm to leave.

But as we tried to pass, Jake grabbed my sister’s wrist, yanking her back toward him.

His eyes were bloodshot with fury.

“A divorce? Because I helped someone who was actually hurt instead of playing along with your fake wedding? Are you out of your damn mind?”

“What’s wrong with helping someone in need? And she got hurt because of your mom! Is this some kind of twisted punishment?”

“Fine! Divorce it is! Let’s see how far you get without us!”

He kicked our suitcase violently, stomping on it repeatedly until the cheap plastic shell cracked open.

Our belongings spilled across the floor – and with them, our mother’s few precious possessions.

I quickly pulled my trembling sister behind me.Seeing her fragile frame shaking with fear, I realized what a fool I’d been to ever let her marry into this family.

Jake’s foot came down hard on one of our mother’s favorite blouses, leaving a dirty print on the faded fabric.

I screamed, shoving him away with strength I didn’t know I possessed.

“Don’t touch that! Get away!”

Ethan’s voice was dangerously quiet,

“Sarah, I’m losing patience with you. Don’t test me.”

I dropped to my knees, gathering my mother’s things protectively against my chest.

The brothers exchanged a look, and Jake immediately moved to pull us apart again.

Ethan handed the insulated container to Sophia as if it were some precious artifact.

He stood over the open suitcase, picking at our belongings with disdain before letting them fall back to the floor.

He lit a cigarette.

The lighter remained in his hand.

“You treat this trash like treasure? Who are you trying to fool? Have I ever let you go without nything?”

“You knew that wedding was a sham from the beginning. Why the theatrics now? Was a sham ceremony more important than someone’s life?”

“I said I’d make it up to you. Can’t you just drop this? You love these rags so much? Fine!”

Before I could react, he flicked the lighter and dropped it onto my mother’s scattered possessions.

Flames instantly engulfed her memory.

I screamed, “No!”

But Jake had his arm across my throat, pinning me in place.

My gentle sister snapped.

Eyes wild, she sank her teeth deep into Jake’s forearm.

As he recoiled, she slapped him hard across the face.

The room froze.

Sophia quickly set down the container and rushed over, throwing her arms around my sister.

“Calm down, please! Jake didn’t mean it! He just wants to talk things through!”

But my sister found a surge of strength from somewhere, broke free, and grabbed handfuls of Sophia’s hair.

Sophia fell to the floor with my sister on top of her, hitting her.

Screams and cries filled the room.

Jake restrained me, shouting for his brother.

Ethan, furious, grabbed my sister by the hair, dragged her off Sophia, and slammed her head against the wall.

Once. Twice. Three times.

Blood poured from her forehead.

I screamed, my voice raw.

I could only watch as she when limp.

Within minutes, my mother’s things were ash, the floor marred by dark stains.

A profound helplessness washed over me.

I opened my mouth, but no sound came out.

Tears tracked through the grime on my face. My heart felt as scorched and empty as the pile on the floor.

I should’ve known three years ago when he laid out the terms of our secret marriage.

My sister and I were just convenient shields against his family’s expectations.

Their hearts had always belonged to Sophia White.

I understood too late.

Ethan wiped his hands with a tissue, his expression disgusted.

Then he went to comfort Sophia.

She cried softly for a while. Jake released his grip on me-not out of mercy, but to hand tissues to Sophia.

I watched the two Sterling brothers fuss over her, their faces etched with worry.

Sophia slowly stopped crying under their attention.

Suddenly, I felt how foolish I’d been for three whole years.

I went to my sister, still crumpled on the floor, just wanting to get her out of there.

But Sophia wasn’t done with us.

Even in victory, she needed to land the final blow. She picked up the insulated container and walked over as I helped my sister stand.

“Sarah, I’m sorry… really. I never meant any of this. I know you must hate me, but I made this for your mom. Please take it for her…”

I looked down at the woman who’d stolen my mom’s last peaceful moments.

In that instant, something in me broke.

I snatched the container from her and smashed it against her head.

Warm, greasy broth dripped down her hair, he cloying scent of chicken and perfume turning my stomach.

My eyes were bloodshot as I yelled, “Get out! Stop pretending to care!”

Ethan had been watching me with a warning look.

The moment I moved, he was on me.

He kicked me hard in the stomach with his dress shoe.

Then he hurried to pull Sophia into his arms, using his expensive shirt to wipe the mess from her hair.

I hit the wall hard, my lower back exploding with pain, and slid to the floor.

By the time he’d cleaned her up, Sophia’s face was streaked with tears.

Ethan ripped off his ruined shirt and threw it aside.

He bent down, gripping my face so hard I thought my jaw would break.

Raised his hand to strike me, but Sophia cried out,

“Ethan, please don’t! It’s my fault! I saw Sarah’s mother’s plane ticket was a cheap print-out, so I thought she’d arrive later. If I’d known she was so sick, I would’ve made the soup sooner… I ruined your wedding. Sarah has every right to be mad…”

Jake quickly handed her tissues and brought a towel for her hair.

Hearing this, I was so angry my vision blurred, my temples pounding.

My mom had refunded her plane ticket to save money for us, taking the train instead.

But from Sophia’s mouth, it became a deliberate deception.

“Shut up! Don’t you dare speak about my mother!”

The words were barely out when Ethan’s slap landed.

Blood trickled from my lip.

He snarled, “You’re the one who should shut up! One more word and I’ll make sure you can’t speak!”

“Sophia orchestrated that entire wedding for you! What right do you have to yell at her?”

“Who the hell do you think you are? If your mom knew you used her illness to trap me into marriage, wouldn’t she die of shame all over again?”

My furious expression cracked slightly.

All I felt was scorching contempt.

Remembering the shoddy wedding venue, a cold laugh escaped me.

No wonder everything had felt so rushed.

From the very beginning, Sophia never intended for them to show up.

Everything that happened today was part of her plan.

Seeing I wasn’t fighting back, Ethan thought I was finally remorseful.

His voice was full of contempt, “Sophia even contacted a wedding planner to redo it properly and called in favors to get your mom a specialist appointment at the hospital. But seeing how you’re behaving, it’s not worth the effort!”

“Apologize to Sophia now, then get the hell out of my house with your sister!”

I pulled my arm from his grasp, my voice cold,

“Redo it? Don’t you see how absurd that is? Even if you redo it ten thousand times, she’ll sabotage it the ten-thousand-and-first time! I don’t need it anymore. Let her plan a wedding for the three of you! My sister and I want no part of it!”

“An apology? Only if she kneels in front of my mom’s grave and begs for forgiveness!”

The anger in his eyes ignited, he spoke through gritted teeth,

“Sarah, do you think I’m joking? Are you deaf?”

“You begged on your knees for two days for this fake wedding! Now you don’t want it? Or are you scared someone will expose your mom’s illness as a lie?”

“Three years ago, it was critical, you had to marry me. Three years later, it’s critical again, you had to have the ceremony. Your mom is remarkably resilient…”
