I have been reborn 999 times, all to save my husband from the woman he can never forget.

Each time, he hides the truth from me, only to be tricked by her into entering that room destined to go up in flames. He always dies in the fiery explosion.

Nearly a thousand lifetimes pass, and I never once complain, even though loving him tears me apart.

However, this time, I have made up my mind. I won’t save him.

This time, I will watch him die with my own eyes.

Chapter 1

I tapped “accept” on the digital invitation for Fashion Week, the corners of my lips raising slightly. “If you want to go, you may do so.”

Gary Clark looked at me in surprise, clearly not expecting my calmness.

I switched off my phone and met his stunned gaze. “Didn’t you always tell me to be more understanding of Lucy? That she’s just a young lady, and life isn’t easy for her? Well, I’m being understanding now. Is that still not good enough for you?”

He frowned and rubbed his temples. “Do you have to be so sarcastic? How many times do I have to say this? There’s nothing between me and Lucy. I only look after her like a younger sister. You’re the one with a twisted mind, so you twist everything you see.”

A twisted mind? If I hadn’t opened his computer during the 999th cycle in a desperate attempt to save him, I might have still believed his words.

We had been married for ten years, and our intimacy had long turned into routine. Even when I reached out to him, he often brushed me off with the excuse of being too tired from work.

Yet on that computer, his photo albums were filled with pictures of him and Lucy Wagner in every kind of pose imaginable.

I once thought he had been tricked by Lucy, and I did everything in my power to pull him back. What I never realized was that the one being fooled all along was me.

I had poured my heart into him, given nearly a thousand lives to save him, and in the end, I was nothing but a joke.

With no words left to say, I turned away, leaving him fuming. This time, I would live for myself.

I bought everything I needed for Pereem, along with a plane ticket that would leave in a week. However, when I returned home, I was surprised to see Gary still there.

In past cycles, I had tried to win him over with our tenth anniversary, even going as far as to kneel and beg him to stay. However, he never budged. He always left for Lucy.

Fate had its own tricks. The moment I decided not to beg anymore, he stayed behind. I was confused, but I didn’t dwell on it. I was leaving soon, and what he did had nothing to do with me anymore.

Dropping my bags, I walked into my dressing room. Ever since I was little, I loved styling dolls, and I became a fashion designer later on. This time, I had been personally invited by a friend, a creative director, to Pereem.

The clothes hanging in that room were the pride of my career and the highlight of the upcoming show. However, when I opened the closet, it was empty.

My eyes widened in disbelief.

“Oh, that,” Gary said casually. “Lucy said she has a banquet tonight, so I gave her your designs to wear.”

I trembled with rage. “Gary, who gave you the right to touch my work without asking? Do you even realize how important those pieces are to me?”

Startled by my reaction, he snapped back, yelling, “They’re just clothes! You can always buy more. Why are you getting so worked up?”

Hearing him dismiss my designs as nothing more than “just clothes”, my anger slowly dissolved into something heavier, akin to a dull, sinking sorrow.

Chapter 2

The man who once loved me no longer existed.

Gary used to follow me to every fashion exhibition in the country, just to support my dreams. Even in small boutiques overseas, he held my hand and swore he would stand by every decision I made.

Because I loved him, I gave up my career after we married and stayed home to take care of him. My friends often invited me to fashion shows, but I always turned them down.

In my gray, colorless life, the only comfort I had left was the collection of clothes I once poured my heart into. They were locked away in my closet, carrying the weight of my abandoned dream.

He knew how much those things meant to me, yet he still allowed Lucy to trample all over me.

A week from now, I’d be starting a new life. His life, on the other hand, would come to an end. With that thought, my emotions finally settled.

However, the next day, one phone call from Lucy shattered my peace.

“Zoey, are you doing this on purpose? Not a single one of those dresses fits me! I know you hate me, but getting back at me like this is too cruel, don’t you think? How could you be so heartless?”

Confused and furious, I hung up on her.

However, the look in Gary’s eyes made my stomach drop. “Zoey, you need to apologize,” he said.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. How could he say something so absurd? “You two stole my designs, and I haven’t even held her accountable. Why should I be the one to apologize?”

His face darkened instantly, irritation flickering in his eyes. “Zoey, can’t you be more sensible? No matter what, you ruined Lucy’s banquet. If you refuse to apologize, I’ll have to reconsider Mr. Johnson’s medical expenses this month.”

The mention of my dad made my heart sink, followed by a wave of bitter despair.

Once, Gary had treated my dad with deep respect. On the day of our wedding, he had knelt before him, swearing to love me for life. Whenever my dad’s illness flared up, Gary was always the first to rush to his side.

People used to praise him for being so devoted, saying I had married the right man. Even my dad often held his hand with tears of gratitude in his eyes.

It was said even the most devoted child grew weary after years at a sickbed, yet he, with no blood ties, cared for my dad tirelessly for ten years.

However, now, he was threatening my dad’s life for Lucy’s sake. The sorrow in my chest was overwhelming, but for my dad’s sake, I had no choice but to give in.

I had no savings after years of being a housewife, so I borrowed money from a friend to transfer my dad to another hospital. By coincidence, it was right next to my new job in Pereem. That way, I could cut ties with Gary once and for all.

That afternoon, Gary dragged me to Lucy’s place to apologize.

She loved cats, and her house was full of them. The moment I stepped inside, they lunged at me, their claws tearing bloody scratches down my legs.

Only then did Lucy appear, feigning surprise. “Oh my, I forgot Zoey is afraid of cats. Sorry about that. There are just too many. I can hardly keep them under control.”

Gary’s eyes were full of concern for Lucy. He shook his head and said, “It’s nothing. It’s just a few scratches. Zoey’s not that delicate.”

I used to be afraid of cats. Five years ago, a stray cat had pounced on me. The shock was so severe that I lost the baby I had been carrying for eight months.

Chapter 3

Back then, Gary had been devastated. He swore he would never forget the pain I endured, and he would spend his life making it up to me. However, he had now forgotten.

I didn’t break down as Lucy expected. Instead, I forced a faint smile. “It’s fine. It’s just a minor injury.”

What they didn’t know was that I no longer feared cats, because some people were worse than animals.

I bowed and offered an apology, but Lucy sneered, saying it wasn’t enough. “You should kneel. That would show sincerity,” she said.

Her words made my eyes burn. I turned to leave.

Lucy instantly pouted, tears welling up. “Gary, she won’t even kneel. She’s not sincere!”

His cold gaze fixed on me at once, his tone dripping with disdain. “It’s just kneeling. What’s so noble about you? Think about Mr. Johnson…”

I bit back the humiliation and sank to my knees. “I’m sorry.”

Tears blurred my vision, and my dignity was crushed into dust.

Gary’s friends smirked in open disdain. They had always disliked me, believing that Lucy, their university classmate, was his true match.

“What a disgrace. Why doesn’t she just leave already?”

“If I were her, I’d have died of shame long ago.”

“To Gary, she isn’t worth a single strand of Lucy’s hair. How pathetic.”

Their words made my eyes sting, and his favoritism toward her made my chest ache with grief.

Lucy, smug with victory, added, “Why don’t you cut up these dresses yourself? That would prove your sincerity.”

My gaze darted to Gary as I fought to keep my emotions in check.

For a moment, he hesitated, as though torn. However, when Lucy leaned in to whisper in his ear with a coy and teasing expression, he faltered. “Zoey, no matter what, this started because of you. Just do as Lucy says,” he said.

I said nothing. I only picked up the scissors and began to cut. The dresses I had poured my soul into turned into scraps before my eyes. Tears fell freely onto the scraps.

Lucy even streamed it live. When I raised my head, her screen was filled with cruel, mocking comments. She beamed at my humiliation. “Alright! That’s enough for today,” she said at last.

I left without a glance at Gary. However, he chased after me, catching my wrist. “Lucy is just young. She likes to fool around, but she means no harm. How do you think that makes me look when you walk away like that?”

I turned, my chest heavy with delayed grief and bitterness. I said coldly, “I did what you asked. Now let me go.”

His brows furrowed as unease flickered across his face, the first hint that something vital was slipping away from him.

I tore my wrist free and walked away without looking back.

Soon after, my friends transferred the money to me, which I sent to the hospital. With the arrangements made, I returned to packing my luggage.

Days passed. The house grew emptier with each box, and the flight drew closer.

Gary still left early and came home late, but I no longer cared where he went. I thought only of leaving.

Then, on the eve of my departure, Lucy called me again. “Zoey, come to my house right now.”

Chapter 4

I was about to refuse when she cut me off, her voice sharp and cold. “You’d better come over right now, or I can’t promise Mr. Johnson will be safe.”

My chest tightened. In all the past lives I remembered, she had never laid a finger on my dad. Why now?

Half an hour later, I arrived at Lucy’s house. She was waiting, seated in a chair. The moment I stepped inside, she shook the phone in her hand. “I’ve got something to show you.”

She tapped on the screen, and pictures began to play. They were photos of her and Gary, tangled up too closely with one another. I counted in a daze. There had to be hundreds of them.

I stared blankly, my heart racing. “What did you do to my dad?”

Her eyes were sharp as blades, cutting into me. “What the hell did you do to him? Why won’t he divorce you and be with me?”

All I could think about was my dad’s safety. Swallowing back the burning in my chest, I begged, my voice trembling, “I’ll ask for a divorce. Gary will be yours. Just please don’t hurt my dad!”

If I could survive tonight, my dad and I would finally be free tomorrow.

Seeing my desperation, Lucy burst out laughing. “Are you begging me? Then show me how bad you want it.”

My dignity was shattered and ground down to nothing. I dropped to my knees like some pitiful dog, choking out, “Please. I’ll do anything you want.”

Lucy’s lips curled in mock amusement. “Good. Then let me show you something better.”

Her finger tapped again, and this time, my dad’s face appeared on the screen.

A hand reached into the frame, gripped his oxygen tube, and yanked it out. My dad’s skin drained of color as he thrashed weakly on the bed, gasping for air.

The person filming only laughed while recording, right up until the moment his body finally stilled.

“Well? Did you enjoy watching him suffer?” Lucy sneered.

White-hot and blinding rage consumed me. I lunged at her, my mind nothing but blood and fury. However, before I could touch her, steel flashed. The knife slashed across my face, pain exploding as warm blood streamed into my eye.

Then, someone shoved me down, pinning me to the floor.

“Zoey, what the hell are you doing?” Gary’s voice thundered. I hadn’t even noticed when he had come in.

“I just walked in and saw you attack Lucy with a knife. How twisted are you?” His roar rattled the walls.

Tears poured down my face as I screamed, my voice raw with grief, “She killed my dad! She killed him!”

Gary’s face darkened, fury burning in his eyes. “Shut up! Lucy went to check on Mr. Johnson tonight and found him already gone. Yet, you still dare to slander her? Apologize now!”

All the pain, all the humiliation, and everything I had swallowed until now tore out of me at once.

I sobbed, my throat breaking. “Slander? You cheated on me with her—that was my fault. She slashed my face, and you didn’t even look. You just said it was my fault. Fine. I was wrong. I was wrong to have ever loved you. But I won’t apologize!”

His hand clamped down on the back of my head, forcing me forward until my skull cracked against the floor a few times. His voice was like ice. “Don’t make me repeat myself. Apologize!”

Through the haze of blood and tears, I raised my face, staring at them with every ounce of hatred I had left.

Their vicious, ugly faces burned into my mind like fire, and in that moment, I swore that I would make them pay in blood!
