My younger sister Avery Denning’s fiance, Timothy Lane, is injured by a raging bull on the eve of their wedding. Timothy ends up impotent because of the incident.
Refusing to marry an impotent man, Avery flees from the wedding.
I gaze at Timothy, abandoned, along with my humiliated parents. My parents then beg me to marry Timothy instead, to which I agree.
Since marrying Timothy, I’ve shouldered the burden of juggling household chores and outside work, working tirelessly from morning till night. He miraculously recovers from his impotence and even becomes the wealthiest man in town.
But Avery suddenly returns on the day Timothy is officially announced as the wealthiest man in Greenwood Vale. She sobs as she explains that she didn’t flee the wedding of her own will.
Instead, Avery claims that I had tricked her into going into the mountains to search for a miraculous berry that could cure Timothy’s impotence. She also claims that I had struck her unconscious on said mountain range.
Timothy immediately believes Avery’s lies. He angrily slaps me and even tosses me into a river to drown. My words fall on deaf ears, and I swiftly pull Timothy and Avery down into the river with me.
When I next wake up, I am back to the day of my wedding to Timothy. This time, Avery shows up, too. But what they don’t know is that without me, Timothy will never recover from his impotence nor become the wealthiest man in Greenwood Vale.
Chapter 1
Timothy Lane grew upset the moment he found that the bride was me. “Amelia Denning, why are you here? I’m supposed to be marrying Avery! I demand an explanation right now!”
Before I could react, my parents, John Denning and Kate Hilton, shared a glance and quickly said, “Oh, Timmy, Amelia insisted on marrying you. She even threatened to kill herself if we didn’t let her! Avery was driven away from home by her, so we had no choice but to let Amelia marry you instead!”
I returned to my senses, shocked by what Dad and Mom had just said. They were the ones who’d begged me to marry Timothy. Why was I the one who’d insisted on it now?
Timothy immediately slapped me across the cheek. “If it weren’t for your meddling, Avery and I wouldn’t have wasted so many years apart in our previous life! Tell me where Avery is right now, or I’ll make sure you never live to see another day!”
His slap shook me to my core, waking me up. Only then was I fully conscious of the fact that both Timothy and I had been reborn.
I glared angrily at him and said, “Avery didn’t want to marry you and fled from home because of your impotence!”
Timothy naturally didn’t believe me. He wrapped a hand around my throat and cried, “Liar! How could Avery not want to marry me when she loves me so much? You must have tricked her and made her leave again!”
Chaos erupted in the hall. I was unable to breathe because of how tight Timothy’s grip around my neck was, yet none of the onlookers came to my aid. They just continued to watch the scene unfold.
Just then, my younger sister Avery Denning’s voice rang out from the door. “I’m back, Timothy! I’m here to marry you!”
Timothy let go of my neck and quickly took my bridal veil from me before draping it on Avery’s head.
I was shocked. It seemed like the three of us—me, Avery, and Timothy—had been reborn.
In our previous lives, a raging bull had struck Timothy’s lower body while he was farming. The doctor had said he’d be impotent for the rest of his life and wouldn’t be able to perform his marital duties.
Avery had cried over the news for hours on end. She had then snuck out of the house with her belongings in the middle of the night.
Dad had worried ceaselessly afterward, while Mom sobbed about how our family’s reputation was tarnished. She then suggested I marry Timothy to make up for Avery’s actions.
Unwilling to see my parents so distraught, I agreed to take Avery’s place in marrying Timothy. Plus, Timothy had a pretty good reputation in town, too.
When Timothy heard about what had happened, he held me in his arms excitedly and said, “You’re the only woman who truly loves me, Amelia.”
After we married, I focused on our family. I worked hard every day and even sought out cures from doctors to reverse Timothy’s impotence.
But we lived a poor life. We never knew if we would have enough for our next meal. Yet, just when we were at our wits’ end, a stranger came to our town and took Timothy under his wing. The stranger taught Timothy how to run a business and promised him riches.
With the help of this stranger, Timothy’s business flourished. He became the first man in town to have a monthly income of more than ten thousand dollars. A couple of years later, Timothy’s business expanded nationwide. He then became the wealthiest man in Greenwood Vale.
I had thought that our days would continue in this manner, but Avery’s reappearance shattered our peaceful lives.
Avery turned up at my doorstep, tears flowing down her face as she explained that she hadn’t abandoned Timothy those years ago. She claimed that I had tricked her into going to the mountains to search for a miraculous berry that could cure Timothy’s impotence and that I had knocked her unconscious when she went there.
Timothy didn’t even hesitate to believe Avery’s sordid lies. He slapped me right then and there and tossed me into the river for me to drown.
I had tried to explain myself, but neither of them wanted to listen. In the end, I’d angrily dragged them down into the water with me. The three of us had then drowned.
I gazed at the lovebirds, trying to brush off the insult and humiliation I had suffered in my previous life. If Avery and Timothy wanted to be with each other so badly, I would make sure that they got their wish.
Chapter 2
Timothy seemed to look more gleeful when he saw how quiet I was. “I told you that Avery would never abandon me. You may love me, Amelia, but that doesn’t mean you can use these dirty tricks to separate Avery and me!”
I smiled bitterly. The years of love and devotion between Timothy and me crumbled into nothing the moment Avery made that statement. I then said, “If you believe that Avery didn’t leave you at the altar, then why don’t you open up her backpack and see what’s inside?”
Avery’s expression instantly fell. She hurriedly said, “I’m loyal to Timothy and Timothy only. I don’t need to do these pointless things to prove myself!”
I sneered, gazing into Avery’s eyes. “In that case, then you wouldn’t mind if everyone sees what you have in your bag, would you?”
Timothy glared at me. “Stop trying to separate Avery and me, Amelia. I’m not going to believe in your lies!”
Just then, an onlooker nudged Avery’s backpack. It fell to the ground, revealing her clothes and some food she’d packed.
The wedding guests gasped in shock. Avery had clearly packed all her belongings into the backpack.
“She’s packed everything from food to clothing. Was she really going to leave her fiance at the altar?”
“Hey, I’d leave the Lane kid, too, if I were her. I heard that he’s impotent.”
“This Avery lady is quite heartless, huh? Why couldn’t she just be upfront about not marrying her fiance? This is so embarrassing for everyone!”
Avery anxiously crouched to hide all the things she’d packed, worried that the guests would see. “Don’t you all know it’s illegal to look through other people’s personal belongings?”
Timothy’s expression changed when he saw the scattered items on the floor and heard the gossip from the guests.
“Explain yourself, Avery!” he said, his voice shaking.
Avery grew pale as she stammered out, “I h-have no idea how a-any one of these things got here. You have to believe me, T-Timothy. I do love you! Amelia must’ve purposely packed these things into my backpack! She’s jealous that you love me and is trying to plot against me!
“Think about it, Timothy. How could I have packed all these things just to hike up a mountain and gather some berries? That bitch Amelia must have snuck them in here!”
I knew that Avery would say that, so I went into our house and took out a note that Avery had left. She had written down her feelings about not wanting to marry an impotent man, and so she chose to abandon him.
I thought that Timothy would believe me this time. But he ended up tearing the note up before even reading it. “That’s enough, Amelia. I know you are deeply in love with me, but I cannot let myself fall into your trap in both my lives!”
Avery held Dad’s and Mom’s hands and whispered something to them, which caused them to smile brighter.
I was about to say something when Dad slapped me across the cheek. “First, you throw tantrums at home over wanting to marry Timothy, then you set Avery up? You’re going to stay in the basement to repent for your mistakes!”
Mom came over and pinched my ear. “You’ve ruined our family’s reputation, you little brat!”
Avery held onto Dad’s hand and cooed, “Not only do we need to lock Amelia up in the basement, we also have to starve her. We have to show her that stealing someone else’s fiance is a terrible thing to do!”
I knew that there was nothing I could say to save myself now that they’d come to this conclusion.
Timothy then dragged me into the basement. I quickly bit him hard on the hand.
He hissed painfully and let go. He then glared at me and barked, “Have you gone rabid?”
I ignored him and ran over to Avery.
“If you lock me in the basement, I’ll reveal your secret to everyone!” I whispered in her ear.
Chapter 3
Avery’s eyes widened in fright as she looked at me. Rage filled her gaze, but there was nothing she could do.
Because she knew that the moment this secret was revealed, she’d no longer have a chance with Timothy.
Avery and I shared the same bedroom. She would always leave at midnight and return home at 5:00 am the next day. I had secretly followed her out of the house one night out of concern for her safety.
Who knew that Avery had actually been going out and sleeping with random men at night, even going so far as to follow them home? The noises she would make in there lasted throughout the night. They only stopped at 4:00 am.
If I revealed this secret to everyone, Avery’s reputation in Greenwood Vale would be ruined.
Avery was still hesitating as to what to do next. So I warned her, “You’d better weigh your options carefully. If you don’t want your reputation ruined, then you’d better let me go right now.”
Avery then reluctantly went to Timothy’s side and said, “It’s our wedding today, sweetheart. Let’s not let Amelia here ruin it. Why don’t we just let her go?”
Avery then turned to Dad and Mom. “Dad, Mom, I know both of you doted on me most. I’m sure you two won’t stop us from kicking Amelia out, right? After all, she did embarrass our family today. She’s only going to trouble us further if we let her stay.”
Timothy held Avery in his arms, gazing lovingly at her. “You’re right, my love. We can’t let a nasty woman like Amelia ruin our wedding day. Hurry up and leave! We don’t want you here ruining our wedding!”
I smiled faintly. “Sure. But before I leave, please give me back the five thousand dollars you owe me!”
Timothy had come to me and asked to borrow five thousand dollars to prepare for the wedding gifts. I had lent him the money without hesitation, already treating him as my brother-in-law. But now, I had to make sure he paid me back in full!
Timothy panicked. “What nonsense are you talking about? When did I ever owe you money?
I took out the IOU note he’d written for me before and showed it to him. “Look here, it’s stated clearly in writing that you owe me five thousand dollars. You even left your signature here. Don’t tell me you’re illiterate?”
Timothy was extremely embarrassed after his borrowing my money had been revealed in front of my parents. “Give me a couple of days to pay you back. I’ve already used up all of the money.”
I knew that Timothy had no money to his name. I had found out about his gambling addiction after marrying him in my previous life. He tended to gamble away every single cent he acquired.
However, Timothy hadn’t asked me for money before to prepare wedding gifts. It was because he needed it to gamble.
“It’s alright. I’ll just take all the wedding gifts you’ve brought today as repayment for the five thousand dollars,” I said.
“Hey, those wedding gifts belong to me.” Avery was displeased. “Do you think you can just take them as you please?”
I shot her a smile. “You can always pay me the money back in Timothy’s stead. Otherwise, I’ll just call the police.”
Timothy held Avery back and said, “My love, we won’t need these petty things once we’re rich. Let pathetic little Amelia take them if she wants.”
Avery snorted proudly and said to me, “When I’m rich, you had better not come begging on my doorstep.”
She even covered her mouth and giggled delightfully after saying that.
Dad and Mom glared at me cruelly, as if I weren’t their daughter at all. They said to me, “If you’re going to do such drastic and evil things, then we hereby disown you as our daughter!
Their intentions were aligned with mine. I had come to understand certain things after the previous life. I was nothing more than property in my parents’ eyes. They could easily toss me away once I no longer had any usable value.
I went into the house and wrote down a statement announcing the disownment between my parents and me, thereby severing my connection to the Denning family.
Before I left the place, I even added spitefully, “If you couldn’t even afford proper wedding gifts, then you might as well give up on your dream of becoming rich!”
Chapter 4
I moved out of the house and went to live by the farmer’s market in town. The folk there gossiped less, and I had better privacy.
I happened to see Avery and Timothy when I left the house that day.
I had wanted to avoid them, but they blocked my way. Timothy grinned at me, saying, “Didn’t you look down on me because of my impotence? I’ve recovered now, but you will never ever be able to marry me in this lifetime. I only love Avery, after all. Women like you don’t deserve me!”
Avery blushed as she lightly smacked Timothy’s chest. “Hush, don’t talk about these things in public! What will we do if my sister gets jealous and tries to steal you away from me again? Oh, I nearly forgot. Amelia’s no longer my sister at this point.”
I ignored the couple, though I did find Timothy’s recovery strange. He couldn’t have recovered that fast. After all, I’d been the one who had gotten him his cure in our previous life. He couldn’t have figured it out on his own!
I couldn’t help but say, “Don’t come crying to me when your impotence comes back after the drug’s effects wear off. Who knows, you might suffer some terrible side effects!”
Timothy grew angry in an instant. “For god’s sake, Amelia. I was still your husband in our previous life! Why do you have to curse me like this? I shouldn’t have listened to Avery during the wedding. I should’ve just locked you in the basement and starved you to death. That way you’ll stop ruining our lives!”
I rolled my eyes at Timothy. I really was casting pearls before swine at this point. He wasn’t going to obtain the actual cure, so I thought to just reveal the truth to him. “I’m not going to waste my time squabbling with you. I’ll just tell you then—”
Timothy suddenly hunched over and cupped his private parts before I could finish speaking. Sweat beaded on his forehead.
Avery hurriedly cried out, “What’s wrong, sweetheart? Oh, please be okay!”
A taxi that happened to drive past came to a stop when the driver saw Timothy’s dire state. The driver then swiftly drove Timothy to the hospital.
Avery insisted that I was the cause of Timothy’s symptoms. She dragged me to the hospital and demanded I pay for all his medical fees.
“If anything happens to Timothy, I’ll make sure you suffer dire consequences!” Avery cried.
I had only gone to the hospital out of curiosity about what would happen next.
The doctor soon finished checking up on Timothy. He seemed hesitant to speak about Timothy’s condition with us.
Avery was pacing around anxiously. “Tell me what’s happened to Timothy, doctor! Did he fall ill because Amelia here made him upset? She’ll pay however much is necessary to treat Timothy!”
Timothy glared at me from the hospital bed, unable to move. “I won’t let you off easy, you bitch!”
I couldn’t help but snicker. I then pretended to be oblivious and asked the doctor, “Sir, the patient isn’t completely impotent now, is he?”
