After helping the company secure a project worth 30 million dollars, the HR department suddenly tells me that I’m fired, and I will not be receiving any of my bonuses this year.

Confused, I look for my boss, Jett Leroy, to ask him about it. However, he points his finger in my face and yells at me, “If it weren’t for you being a stupid Scorpio, being the most toxic match for me and affecting the company’s luck, we wouldn’t have had a 30% drop in net profits this year!

“I’m already generous enough by not making you compensate for all the losses you caused me! How dare you still ask me for more money? Get lost if you know what’s best for you!”

I smile when I read the text message notification on my phone and hurriedly sign the release documents.

Jett is right. My horoscope and his definitely don’t get along well. After all, I will be coming for his ass just a short while later!

Chapter 1

“Remember to come and report for work on the first of the month, Mr. Gavin Carter. And don’t be late.”

After listening to the other person on the line, I responded politely and said, “I understand, and I will be there on time. Thank you.”

I recalled Jett Leroy’s arrogant face this morning as I hung up, and I couldn’t stop myself from wanting to laugh out loud.

He still didn’t know that I’d already found myself a new job at the Audit Commission, and I had already been planning to resign over the next two days anyway.

Still, he chose this exact timing to blame me for the company’s bad performance because my horoscope clashed with his, which I thought was completely absurd.

It seemed as though I wouldn’t be leaving this company on a good note anymore.

I got up and prepared to return to my desk and tidy up. Just as I opened the bathroom door, I bumped into Cade Jefferson and his “followers”. They were smoking outside the door and joking with each other.

Cade cast me a side glance and immediately raised his voice, saying, “Oh, look. Isn’t this our head of department, Mr. Carter? What could he be doing inside the bathroom earlier, I wonder? Looking for a sugar mommy? That was pretty fast of him.”

I planned on ignoring him, so I quickened my footsteps and tried to leave.

However, at that moment, Rafael Thornton, who’d been right next to Cade, said, “Don’t talk about him like that, Cade. It’s not like Mr. Carter can’t find a job elsewhere. I mean, he does need to get a job after getting laid off by our company.

“I just wonder which company would want to put up with him.”

The group of people continued laughing loudly among themselves after he said that, and I couldn’t help feeling chills in my heart.

I had always been treating them well over the past few years. I was the one who had taken them under my wing while securing large projects for the company, personally teaching them the know-how and reports so that they could flourish in their careers.

And if any one of them had a sudden emergency and needed to change shifts or requested their salary in advance, I would always do my best to accommodate them.

I had never once asked them for anything in return. And yet, this was how they treated me after something bad happened to me.

I stared at them with a calm expression on my face and said, “I was still the company’s top salesperson for three years in a row, even when I was performing at my worst.

“And if you guys have too much time on your hands gossiping about me, might I suggest that you use that time working harder instead. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have gone months without bringing in new projects for the company like now.”

Rafael felt offended at that. He gritted his teeth and growled, “Gavin Carter! How dare you still talk so smugly like you’re better than us when you’re already in this kind of situation?

“You say that you brought in a lot of huge projects last time, but did you ever stop and think that it was because our company platform was a very good one?

“You just got lucky and happened to be the one closing the deal each time! If it were up to Cade, he would have gotten much better results than you, maybe ten times or a hundred times more!”

Cade grinned and nodded in delight when Rafael stoked his ego. He then angled his chin toward me and said, “It’s time you faced reality now, Gavin Carter. And everything you were so proud of, be it your abilities or experiencesthey don’t mean a single thing once you’re out of here!

“Oh, and I forgot to tell you something. I am the new head of department from today onward. And it was Mr. Leroy who promoted me himself!”

I chuckled when I heard him say that.

No wonder Cade, who used to tag along with me wherever I went and regarded me highly as his mentor in the past, was suddenly being so aggressive and contemptuous toward me. It was all because Jett had promised him my position.

I cast a side glance at Cade, looking as proud as a peacock, and thought that it was just too ironic.

He couldn’t even draft up anything that looked remotely close to a sales contract when he’d first set foot into my department back then.

Chapter 2

I was the one who had to teach Cade everything he knew. I was his mentor, and I brought him along to client meetings, taught him how to negotiate contract terms, and basically helped him grow from a nobody to his current position of project head.

And now, he was already dismissing me entirely while I was still here at the company. He was showing me his true colors and how much of an ingrate he actually was.

Rafael and the other colleagues were mostly fence-sitters, and of course, they were now expressing their loyalty to their new head of department instead.

Still, I couldn’t be bothered to get back at them anymore.

“That’s great. Congrats on the promotion, Mr. Jefferson,” I said calmly and emotionlessly. “Jett Leroy is someone who happily discards people once they’re no longer of any use to him. I may be the victim today, but who’s to say that you wouldn’t be the next one, hmm?”

Cade’s face turned red at once when he heard me.

“Don’t you dare try to ruin my relationship with the boss with your stupid nonsense, Gavin Carter! You’re just jealous of me! You just don’t like it that I got promoted while you got fired instead. Mr. Leroy promoted me because he believes in my capabilities!”

I watched him lose his shit over my words and actually felt sorry for him. I ignored his outburst and turned to leave.

I was aware that Jett had been involved in shady dealings with dual contracts and falsified accounts over the past few years. I had only turned a blind eye to everything because he was still my boss, and I hadn’t wanted to cause any trouble for myself.

However, he probably wouldn’t even dream that he was going to be my first target for investigation as soon as I got acquainted with my new job next month.

I also wasn’t going to spare Cade, Rafael, or the other colleagues around them who thought they were set for life after latching on to someone powerful. I was going to destroy them all, along with Jett Leroy!

So, I ignored Cade altogether and left.

Yet, when I got back to my desk, my eyes darkened when I saw the mess that was there.

Everything on my desk had been ransacked. My drawers had been emptied out on the ground, and my personal items were scattered all over the floor. Even the little potted plant I’d kept for three years had been uprooted from its pot, sending wet soil all over my place.

The notes I’d painstakingly made were also thrown on the floor with obvious signs of being trampled on.

“Who did this?” I growled in a dangerous voice.

Just then, Cade and the others slowly sauntered up to me and said with a light scoff, “The admin department is reshuffling desks, and this is my place now. Why do I need to report to you about what I’m doing at my desk?”

I saw that my laptop screen was still on, and I hurriedly checked all the files on it.

As expected, every message and conversation had been dug out, and even my encrypted files had been forcibly broken into.

“You broke into my laptop and invaded my privacy. Is that what the admin department also told you to do?” I asked, gritting my teeth as I glared at Cade.

“Well, who’s to say that you wouldn’t try to steal the company’s files and data and bring them along with you to sell off to some competitor?” Cade asked with another scoff. “I was just doing this to protect the company’s interest. Of course, I had to personally go through everything to stop you from doing that.”

I quickly calmed down when I saw the fearless look on Cade’s face. Then, I took out my phone and started taking photos of the crime scene.

“What photos do you think you’re taking?”

Cade’s expression shifted as he immediately went up to block the camera view.

I avoided him and glanced at the other people around him coldly.

“You illegally violated my personal privacy. Of course, I need to take photos for proof. Say, I wonder if this is enough for the police to lock you up for a couple of days?”

Cade was angry and terrified. Still, he held up and barked, “Gavin Carter! Who do you think you’re trying to scare away? Do you really think that police would care about such trivial matters like this?”

Jett came out when he heard the commotion. There was a huge frown on his face.

“What’s the noise about? Gavin, I already told you to pack up your things and leave! Why are you still here?”

I briefly explained the incident earlier, but Jett just waved his hand in my face and dismissed me after hearing everything.

“Stop talking bullshit. Everything here is the company’s assets! Since when have they become part of your private property?”

Chapter 3

Jett lowered his voice in anger and threatened me, “You’d better grab your stuff and leave now if you know what’s best for you! And stop causing trouble for yourself. Otherwise, I’m going to blacklist you, and no other company will ever dare to take you in anymore!”

When Cade heard that, he quickly faked a concerned expression and said, “Don’t get too angry, Mr. Leroy. Gavin’s just mad that he got kicked out of the company. He’s only doing this out of jealousy.”

He then turned to look at me and gave me a fake smile. “Gavin, since you’ve had your contributions to the company in the past, let me help you out.

“You probably won’t be able to find a job anymore, given your age, so it would be impossible for you to find any company willing to take you in after getting fired.

“But hey, if you’re willing to get down on your knees and beg us for forgiveness, perhaps I could put in a good word for you with Mr. Leroy so that he’d still consider employing you as the company’s security guard.”

As soon as the words were out of his mouth, Rafael and the other people immediately burst into laughter.

“That’s right, Gavin! Hurry up and apologize! Look at how good he’s being to you! He’s even offering to help you find a job!”

“Being a security guard isn’t too bad. You’d still get about two thousand dollars a month, around minimum wage. It’s definitely enough for you to survive!”

Instead of getting angry at Cade’s smug look, I simply smiled back at him. Then, I looked at all the other employees in the office and finally fixed my gaze on Cade once more.

“This company promised me, in black-and-white, a bonus commission of two million dollars for the 30-million-dollar project last season. And see what happened? I got a letter of dismissal instead of the promised bonus.”

I then looked at the rest of the employees, who now looked uncertain and said, “If Jett Leroy can fire me for something as ridiculous as having clashing horoscopes with him and therefore pocket the bonus for himself, do you want to guess what other tactics he’d use on the rest of you?”

The entire office fell into hushed silence. Some of the people even averted their gaze from me and looked at Jett instead.

The corners of my lips lifted up. I continued in a sarcastic voice, “You guys really have the guts to continue working and selling your soul to a company as shady and untrustworthy as this.”

“Gavin Carter! Shut up!” Cade exclaimed, before Jett could even get a word in. “Did you not think that the 30-million dollar project was all due to Mr. Leroy having a good relationship with the other party? Did you really think it was because of you that we were awarded the contract?

“Don’t you know that business transactions also rely on whether the bosses have a good relationship with each other? It’s not that easily determined by people like you! You’re a lousy ingrate, and you never deserved to continue staying at the company anyway!”

I was starting to find it more and more ridiculous.

We had only been awarded the 30-million-dollar project because I’d spent three months doing market research, finding out the client’s pain points and preferences, and coming up with a complete proposal that fulfilled the client’s needs and was budget-friendly for all.

I had stayed up for countless nights and asked for advice from countless experts to finally perfect the proposal.

But yet, Jett thought that we got the project simply because he’d had a drink or two with the client.

“You’d better get your ass out of here if you know what’s good for you, Gavin Carter. Leave, now! Or else, I’ll make sure you regret this for the rest of your life!”

Jett’s face was as red as a beetroot as he screamed in my face.

I just scoffed lightly and yanked off my employee ID pass and threw it into the trash.

“I’ll make you eat your words the next time we meet, Mr. Leroy!”

I quickly went home after leaving the company and readied all the documents needed to start at my new job. Exactly one month later, I successfully started working at the Audit Commission.

Soon, my team received their latest investigation task, and the target company was none other than Jett’s.

Coincidentally, Jett was organizing a massive strategy launch event, claiming that they had invented some groundbreaking technology. So, we included them in our list of inspections for the day.

Chapter 4

Jett’s company was very lavishly decorated on the day of the launch event. Jett, Cade, and the rest wore suits and ties and looked confident as the spotlights shone on them.

I entered the venue as discreetly as I could, just as Cade was confidently explaining the “groundbreaking innovation” strategy that they were planning to implement.

At once, I could tell that the core of their strategy was lifted straight from the work I’d put my heart and soul into before I left the company.

No wonder Cade had dug through all the files on my laptop the other day. It was because he wanted to steal my work and claim it as his own.

The only thing he changed was the superficial details that didn’t mean much. And then, he’d confidently called it his own design.

During the break in the middle of the event, Cade suddenly caught sight of me sitting in the last row of seats while he was still onstage.

He was first stunned to see me. However, a mocking grin soon replaced his shocked face. He hurried down the stage and approached me.

“Look, isn’t this Gavin Carter? What’s the matter? Were you not able to find a job for yourself, and now you’re back here to beg Mr. Leroy for some leftovers?”

The guests in the crowd immediately turned their attention toward us.

Cade seemed even more delighted when he saw all eyes on us. He reached out and patted me on the shoulders, saying, “My, my. It has only been a few days, and you can’t even afford to put together a decent outfit anymore.

“Didn’t I warn you before that you’d only be worse off if you left the company? Look at you now! It’s all coming true!”

Right after that, Jett walked over to us with a glass of wine in his hand. He glanced at me coldly and then dumped all the wine over my head.

“Our company does not welcome random people from the streets. If you’re here to beg me to take you back, Gavin Carter, then you’d better get down on all fours and lick up every drop of wine on the floor.

“Maybe I’d consider it if I see how sincere you are about it.”

I wiped off the wine dripping down my face and looked at the two of them with an icy stare. Yet, I didn’t show a hint of anger on my face.

Instead, I said calmly, “Mr. Leroy. I never thought that the proposal I made would end up being such a valuable asset to the company, even after such a long time.

“What’s the matter? Were you not able to come up with anything else on your own? You couldn’t do a thing without me, could you?”

Cade hadn’t just completely lifted my work. He had even copied all of the errors and loopholes in it that I hadn’t managed to correct before I was fired.

When I pointed out all the loopholes to him, Cade’s face turned dark immediately.

“Stop spewing nonsense! I was the one who wrote every single word in this proposal! Since when did it become your work instead?

“You’re just jealous that I’m now more successful than you and about to be ten times or even a hundred times more accomplished than you!”

A split second later, Jett grabbed me by my collar and growled at me with a twisted sneer. “So what if we used your proposal, you moron? Go ahead and report it to the police, then! Let’s see if the police believe us or someone as useless as you!”

I pushed him off me and hurriedly sent out a text message on my phone.

Then, I looked at Jett’s and Cade’s challenging stares and said, “You’re right. The police are arriving soon. Good luck to you both.”

However, Jett and Cade looked like they’d just heard the biggest joke of the century as they burst out in mad laughter.

“Aren’t you a little too naive, Gavin? Did you really think we’d be scared just because you called the police on us?

“This proposal was made by you before you left the company, and it is therefore considered a company asset. Nothing about this will change even if you get the police involved!”

Just as he was done speaking, Jett’s phone suddenly rang. He answered the call and heard his secretary’s anxious voice at once.

“Mr. Leroy! We’re in big trouble! Hurry up to the office, quick!”

Jett’s face paled when he heard his secretary’s words.
