My name is Carmela Romano.

My wedding to Enzo Moretti, the mafia boss, comes with a price tag of hundreds of millions. The extravagant affair leaves the world utterly astonished.

Enzo declares his love with a sky full of fireworks and fills the venue with a million roses. The ten-carat ring on my finger gleams brilliantly, outshining everything around me.

Everyone envies our love story.

But one day, everything falls apart. After a brutal attack by a rival gang, I suffer a miscarriage. To my disbelief, Enzo is absent, preoccupied with a parent-teacher meeting for Luca Vitalethe son of his childhood sweetheart.

After 66 unanswered calls, Enzo finally texts me.

“I’m at Luca’s parent-teacher meeting. Stop calling me!”

“Luca grew up without a father. I’m only helping him this once. There’s no reason to make a scene!”

Blood seeps out beneath me, and the agony in my stomach is unbearable. I can only sink deeper into despair.

The child I’ve waited for all these years is gone.

The snow falls heavier with every passing moment. I close my eyes, yearning to escape this world with my baby.

But miraculously, a patrolling officer discovers me, barely clinging to life.

When I wake in the hospital, one thought burns in my mind.

“I want a divorce. Enzo, I’m done with you.”

Chapter 1

When I opened my eyes again, I was in a hospital bed.

The patrolling officer who saved me was there, and a doctor was carefully tending to my wounds.

Instinctively, I whispered, “Where’s my baby?”

My voice came out raspy and broken. I realized it had gone completely hoarse.

A look of pity passed over the doctor’s face. “The baby didn’t make it. If you’d been brought in ten minutes earlier, we might have been able to save them.”

Even though I had been dreading this answer, I couldn’t stop the tears from streaming down my face.

I reached for my phone and typed a message to Enzo Moretti, my husband. “Let’s get a divorce.”

Hours slipped by, and there was still no reply.

I typed another message. “I was in a car accident. The baby is gone. I’m at Central City Hospital.”

Still, the silence stretched on.

After I contacted my lawyer and sent Enzo the divorce agreement, my phone finally rang.

To my shock, it was Bianca Rossi.

“Ciao, Carmela, please don’t be upset. Luca’s parent-teacher meeting required both parents’ attendance, so I had no choice but to ask Enzo for help.

“Please don’t let this affect your marriage. Also, you shouldn’t use your child as a pawn in this matter. Enzo loves you deeply. You’ll only end up hurting him by doing this.”

Just as I was about to speak, Enzo’s voice cut in.

“Carmela, can you please stop bringing up the baby and divorce every time something happens? Show some maturity!

“The parent-teacher meeting required both a father and a mother. Luca doesn’t have a father. I was only helping this once. You’re a mother yourself. How can you be jealous of a child?”

Toward the end, his voice rose, escalating into a shout.

Tears streamed uncontrollably down my face. “I swear I’m not lying! Our baby didn’t make it. The Tattaglia family rammed their car into me! They said if you ever go near their turf again, they’ll kill me next time!”

Even as I wept, Enzo sneered coldly.

“I had Dante check on you. He told me you were watching a movie at home. I even called Central City Hospital. They said no one suffering a miscarriage has been admitted in the past two days. You’d better stop lying to me!”

Just then, Bianca’s voice came through the phone. “Don’t be angry, Enzo. Carmela’s just lying to get your attention.”

“Bianca, there’s no need to defend her. Joking about an innocent baby’s fate just to get my attention isn’t how a responsible mother behaves!”

Without another word, Enzo hung up.

When I tried to call back, his phone was turned off.

I decided to email him the medical report I had gotten from the hospital.

The patient in the bed next to mine had overheard everything. She looked at me with pity and handed me a tissue. “A man like that isn’t worth your tears. Stay strong.”

Her words only made my tears fall harder.

For this baby, I had endured more than a dozen rounds of IVF and countless hormone injections to maintain the pregnancy. No one knew how deeply I had longed for this child.

But in the end, I still lost my baby.

As I rested my hand on my empty belly, a searing ache ripped through me.

Enzo would never know the truth. While he went for another child’s parent-teacher meeting, his own baby had slipped away from this world.

The first time the Tattaglias ran me down, I had fallen but hadn’t been seriously hurt.

As they got out of the car, they pointed at me menacingly. “If your husband hadn’t taken over our territory and cost us hundreds of millions, we wouldn’t be drowning in debt! Today, you’ll get a taste of revenge. We’ll destroy his heir!”

I begged them to spare me and my baby, insisting I could convince Enzo to pay them back.

They allowed me to make calls, but not a single one was answered.

The Tattaglias eventually lost their patience. They got back into the car and struck me again.

This time, my baby didn’t survive.

Their threat still echoed in my mind. If Enzo ever defied them again, they would destroy me completely.

Tears poured down my face. Maybe this marriage had been a mistake from the very beginning.

It was clear that Enzo had never truly loved me. The person he cared about was his childhood sweetheart, Bianca.

Three months ago, she had returned with her son, Luca Vitale, following her divorce. Since then, Enzo had been taking care of them.

Not only had he helped enroll Luca in an elite international school, but he had also bought them a villa right next to ours.

He even hired a maid and a driver to take care of their every need.

As the head of the mafia, Enzo was constantly buried in work. Yet somehow, he always found time to care for Bianca and Luca.

When it came to me and my pregnancy, however, he remained utterly indifferent.

A wave of regret consumed me. Had I left him earlier, perhaps my baby would still be here.

It was clear now that our marriage had run its course.

Chapter 2

Suddenly, my phone buzzed. It was an Instagram notification.

“From now on, Luca will have Enzo with him at every parent-teacher meeting!”

In the photo, Bianca and Enzo stood on either side of Luca, their smiles lighting up his face. Every word in her caption overflowed with pride.

While Luca was being cherished by Enzo, my baby had already been erased from his world.

“Enzo,” I thought bitterly, “when you finally realize that you chose another child over our own, will you feel even the slightest regret?”

I grabbed my phone and instructed my lawyer to forward the signed divorce agreement to Enzo.

A whole week went by, and I still hadn’t received a reply. Determined, I arranged for the divorce agreement to be delivered straight to his office.

Even three days later, there was no response. With no other option left, I called to confront him.

“Carmela, I really liked the gift you sent this time,” Enzo said. “Stop lying just to get my attention, and stop being jealous of Bianca and Luca. Only then will I promise to care about you more.”

Before I could say anything, his words struck me silent.

He was referring to the package I had sent to his officethe one that held our divorce agreement.

He hadn’t even bothered to open it and assumed it was some kind of peace offering from me.

“That’s not a gift, Enzo,” I said firmly. “It’s a divorce agreement.”

“Are you out of your mind, Carmela? That was a week ago! Are you seriously still hung up on it? Can’t you behave yourself for once? You’re pregnant, for heaven’s sake! Why are you acting like this?”

Bianca spoke up suddenly. “Carmela, if your marriage is falling apart because of me and Luca, we’ll leave. Just please don’t divorce Enzo! He loves you so much. If you leave him, he’ll lose his mind!”

Then, she said to him, “Enzo, don’t be angry. Carmela’s just upset. You should comfort her. Pregnant women act like this sometimes. She doesn’t really want a divorceshe just wants your attention.”

Although Bianca seemed like she was defending me, in truth, she was criticizing me, implying I was short-tempered and impulsive.

Enzo sneered coldly. “Let’s just hope our baby doesn’t inherit your temper and jealousy.”

At that moment, I completely lost control. “Enzo, the baby’s gone! You’ll never see them!” I shouted, tears pouring down my face.

After a tense silence, Enzo’s cold voice pierced through the phone. “Carmela, stop being ridiculous. I can’t stand it when you make jokes about the baby. I’m taking Luca out to buy some toys. I don’t have time for your lies.”

His words struck me like a knife to the heart.

“Enzo, I’ll take Luca out. You should go home and be with Carmela,” Bianca chimed in. “A pregnant woman’s emotions can affect the baby’s development!”

Her concern was only surface-deep; in reality, she was hinting that I was jeopardizing the baby’s health to get attention.

“Carmela’s just overreacting. Don’t worry about her,” Enzo replied.

The call ended the next second. Tears of frustration and helplessness poured down my face.

The next two weeks were unbearable. Enzo made no effort to contact me. It felt as though he had completely forgotten I was his wife.

Every day, I watched the other patients being cared for by their families. The loneliness cut me to the bone.

Under the covers each night, I grasped my unborn baby’s clothes and wept quietly.

Over those two weeks, my heart broke repeatedly as I mourned both my baby and the end of my marriage.

Letting go of the man I once loved tore something deep inside me. I knew it would take a long time to heal.

One day, the doctor finally told me I could be discharged. As I walked past the pediatric clinic, I saw Enzo carrying Luca in his arms for his check-up.

“Dad Mom I’m scared of the needle,” Luca whimpered. He clutched Enzo’s hand, his eyes welling with tears.

“It’s okay, don’t be scared.” Enzo comforted him. “I’ll stay right here with you. When you get better, I’ll take you to the amusement park.”

“There’s nothing to be afraid of, Luca. I’ll be right here with you too,” Bianca added.

The three of them looked like a happy family.

Meanwhile, my deceased baby and I were nothing more than abandoned shadows. I placed my hand over my flat belly, my heart breaking all over again.

Suddenly, the truth became clear. My baby and I were meaningless in Enzo’s world.

It was Bianca and Luca who truly matteredthe ones he cherished and protected above all else.

The last shred of hope in my heart finally faded.

Pain surged through me, pushing me to the brink of collapse.

“Are you alright?”

A janitor came over to steady me. After thanking her, I turned and left.

Chapter 3

I went home and started packing my things. I was finally ready to leave.

On the way, I stumbled upon Bianca’s new Instagram post.

“Having Enzo with him at the doctor’s made Luca brave. He wasn’t afraid of the pain this time!”

The photo showed Enzo holding Luca close, his expression full of concern.

Enzo had commented on the post, “From now on, I’ll always be there for him.”

“I’ll treat him like my own son.”

As I read those words, tears filled my eyes again.

I had already been shattered by the loss of our baby. Yet here he was, promising to care for another woman’s son.

Every ounce of his love should have belonged to our baby.

Grief coiled around my heart, leaving me gasping for air.

Upon returning home, I looked at the nursery I had lovingly prepared. Tears streamed down my face as I stood among all the baby items.

Enzo and I had planned every detail for our baby’s arrival. But now, our child was lost to us.

The home that had once overflowed with happiness now felt like a knife twisting in my chest. All I wanted was to run away.

I grabbed my suitcase, ready to leave.

Just then, Enzo appeared at the door. “Great, you’re back! Could you get the nursery ready? Bianca’s bringing Luca over to stay here. Make sure the decorations are blue. Luca loves that color.”

I froze. “What did you just say? Are you seriously letting another child sleep in our baby’s room?”

Even though I had already decided to leave, seeing how openly biased Enzo was still broke me.

“You’re only five months along,” he retorted. “There’s still plenty of time before our baby’s born. Let Luca sleep in the nursery for now. We can always redecorate another room later. He’s sick and needs someone to look after him, so he’ll be staying here for a while.”

Suddenly, Enzo’s gaze landed on the suitcase beside me.

“Where do you think you’re going? Since you couldn’t get my attention by lying, are you attempting a little getaway now?”

He let out a cold, mocking laugh as he sank into the couch.

“You’re about to be a mother, for crying out loud. Can’t you be more mature and forgiving? Luca’s never had a father. Why do you have to make a fuss just because I’m being kind to him? Besides, they’re only staying here temporarily. Once Luca gets better, they’ll leave.”

Seeing Enzo pour his heart into caring for another woman’s child felt like a dagger slowly twisting in my chest.

“I’m not throwing a tantrum. If you want them to move in, so be it,” I said. “You can have someone else tidy the room. I’m leaving.”

I didn’t want to speak to him any longer.

With every conversation, the truth sank in deeper. Bianca and Luca held a place in Enzo’s heart that our baby and I never would.

Just as I took a few steps, Bianca appeared in the doorway with Luca. “Carmela, what’s wrong? Are you upset that Luca and I came over? We’ll leave right now. Please, don’t be angry.”

Feigning concern, she turned and led Luca away.

Without warning, Enzo stepped in, stopping her in her tracks. “You don’t have to go. If anyone’s leaving, it’s Carmela. She’s being ridiculous again.”

With that, he carried Luca in his arms and headed to the nursery.

Bianca leaned in closer to me, a triumphant smirk on her face. “Did you see that, Carmela? As long as I’m here, Enzo will never put you first. He’ll never see you as my equal, and your child will never measure up to mine.”

The moment she finished speaking, she deliberately stumbled into the coffee table. “Ouch! Carmela! Even if you dislike me, you can’t just push me like that!”

Enzo lunged forward, steadying her in the nick of time. “Bianca!”

His face was a mask of fury as he glared at me.

“Damn it, Carmela! How could you lay a hand on her?”

“I” I tried to explain, but before I could get another word out, Enzo shoved me hard. I stumbled and crashed to the floor.

It was only then that he noticed my stomach. Where it had once gently curved, it had now flattened completely.

“Carmela, what happened to your belly? Where’s the baby?”
