Knock Knock, It‘s Your Husband

Blurb:

When Ethan Shaw kissed his ex Scarlett during Truth or Dare, I thought my heart would break. But then his identical twin brother Evan Shaw picked up the Passionate Kiss dare card. With deceptive innocence, he asked me, “Can you handle it, Evelyn?” That’s when I saw the shocking subtitles floating above his head predicting he’d visit my room tonight whispering “It’s me, your husband.” This twin romance became a dangerous game of revenge and desire. As Ethan grew furious watching Evan’s advance, I realized this love triangle was more complicated than any game of Truth or Dare. Who will Evelyn choose between the Shaw brothers?

Content:

My boyfriend,Ethan Shaw, lost a round of Truth or Dare, then he kissed his ex-girlfriend.

He was telling me yet again not to be a sore loser when his identical twin brother suddenly leaned in.

He held the Passionate Kiss dare card he’d drawn.

His gaze settled on my lips as he asked, a deceptive innocence in his tone,

“Can you handle it, Evelyn?”

The moment he finished speaking, translucent comments flashed over his head.

[LOL, he’s not even pretending! Turn around and see your brother’s face!]

[OMG, the girl he pined over for seven years ends up as his brother’s girlfriend, and this is how he treats her? He’s already fuming.]

[Girl, if you nod yes, he’ll be knocking on your door tonight whispering ‘It’s me, your husband’.]

I tentatively nodded.

That night, my door was knocked on.

Ethan Shaw kissed his ex-girlfriend at my birthday dinner.

Lipstick smudged his mouth as he looked at me impatiently.

“Can you stop making a scene?”

“It’s just a game. Do you have to ruin the mood?”

All eyes turned to me. I stood there, frozen and embarrassed.

Whenever his ex, Scarlett, was around, Ethan became a different person.

Yet normally, he wouldn’t even raise his voice at me.

I tugged at Ethan’s sleeve, wanting to say something.

His ex, Scarlett, rolled her eyes dramatically,

“Ugh, so boring. I shouldn’t have come.”

“If a little kiss causes this much drama, she’d probably lose her mind if she knew we used to share a bed.”

I froze solid.

That familiar feeling of being the outsider, the one excluded, washed over me again.

I clenched my sleeve cuff hard. Instead of running off hurt like before, I looked Ethan in the eye. “Since it’s just a game, can I play like that too?”

Ethan stared at me, then nodded dismissively. “Sure. Go ahead.”

Almost all the guys there were his buddies. He was confident that even if I played, none would dare make a real move on me.

He was right.

One of his friends tried to smooth things over. “Evelyn, don’t be mad at Shaw. It’s just a game.”

“Yeah, and we’ve known each other forever. It’s all purely platonic.”

A few words, and the whole incident was brushed aside. I stood there, my eyes stinging with frustrated tears.

Ethan grabbed my wrist. “Alright, stop being embarrassing. Sit down…”

He didn’t get to finish.

His twin brother, who’d been silent in the corner all night, stood up.

He picked up the kiss dare card Scarlett had drawn and sat down beside me, his voice calm and cool.

“Can you handle it, Evelyn?”

The lounge fell dead silent.

I’d heard Ethan had an identical twin, but this was my first time meeting Evan Shaw.

The face seemed identical to Ethan’s.

But up close, I saw the differences.

Ethan was aloof, always looking down on people.

Evan, somehow, seemed… gentle. Approachable.

When I didn’t answer, he looked at me with that gentle expression and added quietly,

“My brother handled it just fine.”

I felt Ethan beside me turn to stone, his face thunderous.

The next second, subtitles flashed over Evan’s head.

[LMAO, zero effort to hide it! Turn around and see your brother’s face!]

[OMG, the girl he searched for seven years ends up as his SIL, and this is how he treats her? He’s about to explode.]

[Sweetie, if you nod yes, he’ll be knocking on your door tonight whispering ‘It’s me, your husband’.]

…What kind of forbidden romance novel was this?

Looking at Ethan’s stormy expression…

Almost against my will, I found myself nodding along with the subtitles.

I admit, the nod was partly revenge.

I wanted Ethan to taste that bitter pill too.

But I didn’t expect Evan to actually lean in, right in front of his brother.

Gasps filled the lounge.

I stopped breathing.

He simply looked at me for two long seconds… then pulled back, putting distance between us..

A second later, Ethan yanked him away and dragged me out of the lounge by my wrist.

The hallway was quiet. His expression was pure irritation. “Had enough?”

“You’ve been targeting Scarlett all night, and now Evan’s just another pawn in your little tantrum?”

The cold air made my heart feel icy. I looked up at him. “So you do care how it feels?”

“How come it’s okay for you, but not for me?”

Ethan sighed. “Scarlett was right. I shouldn’t have let you here tonight.”

His words stabbed me. “So tonight wasn’t actually for my birthday? It was just your pre-planned get-together?”

I was just an afterthought.

“Forget it,” Ethan said wearily, pulling me back towards the lounge. “I’ll take you home.”

“No,” I shook off his hand. “Go take Scarlett home.”

Ethan’s face darkened. “Are you determined to fight with me tonight?”

I went back into the lounge, grabbed my coat, and headed for the door.

Ethan followed.

Just outside, Scarlett’s voice called out behind us.

She looked pale, clutching her stomach. “Ethan… could you take me home? I think I’m…”

She trailed off, clutching her stomach as she crouched down.

I looked back at Ethan. “She called for you. Aren’t you going?”

“Stop talking to me like that,” he snapped, annoyed. “I said I’m taking you.”

He flatly refused Scarlett, pulling out his phone to call her a cab. But Scarlett reached out and tugged his shirt hem.

Her voice was weak, pleading. “…My clothes are ruined. I’m not lying.”

Ethan’s finger froze over his phone screen.

Three minutes later.

Scarlett was in the passenger seat of Ethan’s car, wrapped in his jacket.

Ethan looked at me, lips pressed tight. “I’ll be right back.”

Ethan had still chose Scarlett.

A gust of wind whipped past. By the time I processed it, his taillights were vanishing into the night.

Silence descended, just the quiet hum of the city night.

The outcome I’d expected, yet it still stung.

I stood there, letting the cold wind bite my skin.

Finally accepting the truth. Ethan didn’t love me that much after all.

I turned to leave, then realized I’d forgotten my purse inside.

I waited a while longer in the cold, estimating most people had probably left by now, before turning back.

But I was wrong.

The lounge door was ajar. Two people were still inside.

A frustrated, almost panicked voice drifted out:

“Dude, seriously? It has to be Evelyn Wright???”

“She’s your brother’s girlfriend!”

“And next time, don’t pull crap like that, okay? Your brother’s got a temper.”

I halted just outside the door, peering in.

The lights were still dim.

Evan leaned back on the couch, expression cool.

None of that earlier gentleness remained.

He said flatly, “Evelyn deserves better. He doesn’t deserve her.”

His friend sounded even more exasperated: “Deserve or not, that’s your brother’s business! And if he doesn’t deserve her, who does?”

Evan took a long swig from his bottle, then stated calmly: “Me.”

“??? Not you.”

“Jesus, I can’t believe this… wait, Evelyn?”

Mid-sentence, the friend spotted me.

He shut up instantly, nudging Evan hard.

Evan, holding his half-empty bottle, froze for a second.

Then slowly looked up.

His eyes met mine in the sudden silence.

“…”
