I was driving home with my wife Scarlett. A handsome man suddenly forced our car to stop.

The man smashed my window and angrily demanded I get out.

I was confused, but Scarlett got out and embrace the man, soothing him,

Sweetheart, calm down. I didn’t mean to ignore your calls. I was just swamped with the family gathering today.

My heart was clenched.

I opened the car door to get out, but Scarlett pushed me back into the passenger seat.

“Stay inside! Don’t you dare scare him!”

The man pointed at my face and yelled,

“You piece of shit! Is Scarlett yours alone?! How dare you hog her!”

“If you ever stop her from taking my calls again, I’ll fucking kill you!”

Here I was, the husband, locked in the passenger seat by my wife like some dirty secret of her.

I’d sacrificed my health to save Scarlett, spending three years abroad recovering from it.

I’d barely made it home before this homewrecker strutted around like he was the husband.

Scarlett left me and the car stranded on the side of the road, walking away arm-in-arm with the man.

Later, I had just finished digging up everything to know about the man when he called me:

“Don’t you dare threaten Scarlett with divorce to make her dump me, you idiot!”

“I’m telling you straight up, I don’t give a damn if she divorces you or not!”

“Marriage is just a burden to me. What do I need it for?”

“Bastards have inheritance rights too. Her money, her love C it’s all mine anyway.”

What an amusing little homewrecker.

Fine then. Let’s play a high-stakes game.

“Only shallow bastards like you care about a stupid piece of paper!”

“Fine, I’ll ‘let’ you keep the title. But in return, you stay the hell out of my relationship with Scarlett.”

Jax Reynolds sounded nothing like a guilty homewrecker.

Instead, he acted like the wronged spouse.

His sheer audacity came down to one thing: Scarlett gave him confidence.

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“If you had any real power, you wouldn’t be acting like a clown in front of me!”

“And Jaxie Boy, the ‘title’ wasn’t yours to give.”

“It’s something you couldn’t get on your knees begging for.”

Furious at being called “Jaxie Boy”, he spat out a threat,

“You’ll pay for that. I’ll make damn sure you see exactly how much your wife loves me!”

Click. He hung up.

I sat frozen in my chair for a long time.

It all felt like a bad dream I couldn’t wake up from.

If Jax hadn’t confronted me like that, I would never have believed Scarlett, my devoted wife, cheated on me.

It was impossible to relate the woman who’d drained her resources, moved heaven and earth to get me into the best overseas clinics, to this betrayal.

I texted Sophie Bennett, the lawyer my late father trusted most:

“I need to file asset freeze orders. Investigate Scarlett Montgomery’s accounts. She’s cheated.”

Making that decision felt like tearing my own heart in two. The pain was suffocating.

Scarlett finally came home.

She looked like someone caught red-handed with no excuses, sitting quietly across from me.

I stared at her face, memories flooding back.

18-year-old Scarlett picking wildflowers by the roadside, handing them to me with a shy smile:

“Liam, I’ll always love you.”

The heartache was excruciating. My eyes stung.

Seeing the pain in my eyes, Scarlett panicked.

Finally, she spoke:

“I’m sorry. Really sorry…”

She couldn’t hold my gaze for more than a second before looking away.

“That’s all you have to say?”

I tried to sound calm, but my voice cracked with emotion.

“Jax doesn’t want marriage.”

“I’ll… I’ll try to balance things between you both.”

Her words nearly choked me.

She actually wanted both of us?!

I bit my lip. She didn’t love me anymore.

I forced myself to speak,

“Let’s get a divorce. I’ll set you free.”

Her head snapped up. Her eyes held a stubborn refusal.

“I married you. I promised to take care of you for life.”

“Especially after you were paralyzed for three years from saving me. I will spend my life making it up to you.”

“Just… please don’t make trouble for Jax.”

Her “making it up to me” made me laugh bitterly.

“By sleeping with another man? That’s how you make it up?”

“I’m sorry. All I can honestly say is… I love you both. I can’t choose.”

The heavy silence was shattered by her phone ringing.

Seeing the caller ID, she threw out a hurried line:

“I won’t divorce you.” And she left.

It had to be Jax.

She jumped whenever he called. Her devotion to me was now poured entirely onto him.

I told Scarlett’s parents about the affair.

They just chuckled dismissively.

“What successful woman doesn’t have someone on the side? Especially one with Scarlett’s wealth?”

“Relax, Liam. The Montgomery-Thompson alliance is solid. Your position as the legal spouse is secure.”

They assumed I was begging for their support.

What I was really telling them was that once loyalty between couples vanished, only the fight for assets remained.

I refused to let some homewrecker take everything from me.

I went straight back to work at Montgomery Industries.

I needed a high-end gift for an important client’s birthday and went to a luxury boutique for the latest designer watch.

The sales associate packaged it politely.

“That will be $290,000, sir.”

I handed over my card. The associate swiped it.

“I’m sorry, sir. This card has insufficient funds.”

I froze. This was the unlimited credit card Scarlett gave me five years ago.

I was about to call Scarlett when I heard the sharp click of men’s dress shoes approaching.

“Chad, darling! Wrap up every single new piece you have for me!”

It was Jax.

He gave me a contemptuous once-over and pulled out a black card.

It was Scarlett’s card. The one with unlimited access.

Mine was just a supplementary card, its limit controlled by hers.

The associate addressed him respectfully,

“Mr. Reynolds, that will be $5.68 million.”

He waved a hand dismissively and paid for all the luxuries.

Smug, he pulled a cigarette from his jacket pocket and put it between his lips.

He blew smoke in my face, sneering.

“Where a woman spends her money shows where her heart is.”

“No money? What are you doing in a place like this?”

The smoke hit me. I stared back coldly and dialed:

“911? My wife’s credit card has been stolen and used fraudulently. Please come immediately.”

Jax only flinched for a second, then doubled down on his arrogance.

“Just wait until Scarlett gets here. She’ll slap you silly!”

He dialed Scarlett, shouting:

“Scarlett! Your husband is causing trouble for me again!”

“You have twenty minutes to get here and slap him! Twenty minutes or we’re through!”

He wasn’t embarrassed to be known as the other man.

Instead, he wore it like a badge of pride!

The police arrived just before Scarlett came running, breathless.

Instinctively, she stepped protectively in front of Jax, glaring at me.

“What is this nonsense?”

Jax, basking in her protection, slapped me hard.

“You piece of shit! Who the hell do you think you are, calling the cops on me!”

“I’m spending my woman’s money! That’s my goddamn right! None of your fucking business!”

His nails scratched my cheek.

One slap wasn’t enough. He came at me again.

I raised my fist to strike back, but two officers grabbed my arms.

Scarlett wrapped her arms around Jax from behind, soothing,

“Honey, calm down! Let me handle this, okay?!”

Then, she frowned at me.

“Just leave! Stop the nonsense!”

My wife, who promised eternal love and protection, now sided with her lover against me.

The searing pain made me lash out.

I swung my arm and slapped Scarlett hard.

“You and your boy-toy, ganging up on me!”

She didn’t hit back. Yet Jax was incensed, trying to charge me again.

“Asshole! You hit my woman! I’ll fucking kill you!”

Scarlett held him back, still using that soothing tone:

“Stop! It’s okay! Calm down!”

“No, sweetheart! How dare he hit you?!”

Scarlett kept her arms locked around Jax. They looked like a devoted couple.

The police separated us and asked about the stolen card.

I pulled out my phone and showed the officer our digital marriage certificate:

“We’re married. My wife’s card is in another man’s hands, and he just spent over five million dollars.”

“Neither of us authorized this. That’s theft!”

Jax shouted defiantly:

“I didn’t steal it! My girlfriend gave it to me! I have every right to spend her money!”

“Sweetheart, tell them! Did you give me this card, or did I steal it?”

Scarlett hesitated for a split second, glancing at me.

Jax didn’t like that. He slapped her arm sharply:

“Scarlett What’s that look? You feel sorry for him?!”

“No, Jax, don’t be so impatient,” she soothed.

Her arm naturally sliding around Jax’s waist as she spoke to the officer:

“It’s a misunderstanding. I gave him the card.”

Her words made me a complete fool.

The officers saw a domestic dispute.

“Sort out your personal lives. Don’t waste police resources,” one advised before turning to leave.

But Jax stopped them, righteous fury burning:

“Hold on! This bastard made a false report! Defamation!”

“I demand he face the full force of the law!”

Scarlett tried to intervene:

“Let it go, Jax. Don’t escalate. For me?”

“No! You’re defending him! Do you love him more than me?”

“Fine! You two can live happily ever after! I’ll just fuck off and die!”

I couldn’t fathom how gentle, patient Scarlett had fallen for this crude, childish man.

However, Scarlett looked terrified he’d leave.

She turned to scold me:

“You were wrong. You need some time to reflect.”

Jax insisted on pressing charges for false reporting and defamation. I was held.

As they led me to the squad car, Scarlett hurried over:

“Jax is… he’s just like that. Avoid him next time, okay?”

I just stared back coldly. Speaking felt pointless.

Inside the car, I contacted Sophie Bennett.

My instructions: slip the divorce papers into some routine documents and trick Scarlett into signing them.

I was released seven days later on our son’s memorial day.

Every year, Scarlett and I would spend it together at his graveside.

I decided to push all bitterness aside for our son.

The housekeeper told me Scarlett hadn’t been home all week. Likely with Jax.

I called her. Jax answered.

“Out of the cell, asshole? What do you want with my woman?”

Before I could retort, Sophie arrived and handed me the divorce papers, signed by Scarlett Montgomery.

No point wasting breath on that parasite now.

“Today is her son’s memorial. Tell her or don’t. Doesn’t matter anymore.”

Jax exploded. He switched to video call:

“See this, you bastard?! Her son is right here! Curse my kid again, and I’ll end you!”

On screen, Scarlett sat at a dining table with two children C a girl about two, and a boy about one.

A birthday cake sat in front of them. Scarlett hugged both kids:

“Come here, Mom loves you.”

Seeing me on the video, she froze, guilty. But she didn’t blame Jax for revealing this.

I stood rigid. Even though we were done, the image stabbed deep.

While I recovered overseas for three years, she’d been building a family with him.

Jax twisted the knife:

“Oh! Right! You mean your baby that died at birth? So fucking pathetic!”

“Today is our little boy’s birthday. Don’t disturb us!”

“Scarlett’s busy with the living. Go mourn your precious little dead boy alone!”

Click. He hung up.

I stood frozen for a minute until Scarlett texted:

“Liam, you’re the most understanding man.”

“I’ll go with you tomorrow, okay? Please believe me, I still love you.”

I stared at the message, a bitter laugh escaping.

It is said that people never understand the pain until they experience it themselves.

Well Scarlett, prepare to feel mine.

“Keep the divorce quiet for now. I have other plans.” I told Sophie.

That night, I booked a flight abroad, vanishing from Scarlett’s life.

Jax gloated on my social media:

“LOL! You pathetic loser! Running with your tail between your legs!”

But Scarlett searched frantically for me.

She even offered a reward: 30% of Montgomery Industries shares for finding me.

Later, she lifted it to 50%. Still, no one found me.

Then, a year later, she took her kids to Disneyland and saw me holding a baby.

Tears welled in her eyes as she rushed over:

“Liam! I found you!”

She didn’t know my reappearance was step one of their downfall.
