On the day I proposed, my girlfriend Scarlett Sinclair, slapped the ring right out of my hand.
Game over, ladies! Looks like I win!
I stood frozen in place as her friends erupted in mocking laughter.
Scarlett, you are the best, You actually made Lucas, that cold and unfeeling guy, fall for you. one crowed.
“No backing out now! Transfer every penny you owe me,” Scarlett demanded, her eyes gleaming.
Just then, my younger brother, Liam Young, walked over wearing an identical suit.
He dropped to one knee, presenting a diamond ring twice the size of mine to Scarlett.
She beamed, slipping it on and loudly declaring the “I do” that should have been mine.
Then they swept away amidst the cheers. I tried to chase after them to demand an explanation, but my family blocked my path.
My eldest sister, Victoria, the CEO, stepped in front of me.
“Don’t flatter yourself! Lucas! Scarlett’s groom was always Liam. This engagement has nothing to do with you. Spare yourself the humiliation.”
Mom grabbed my arm, her voice pleading. “Lucas, you know Liam’s situation. His chronic depression makes him so fragile. Scarlett is the only one who brings him peace. Can’t you just… yield to your brother this once?”
My father left no room for argument. “Stop pretending to be the victim! You’ve lived eighteen years of undeserved luxury. Now you’re just returning what was never yours. Frankly, you got off easy.”
Then they ordered security to lock me inside the mansion, under strict surveillance to prevent me from crashing the engagement party.
Like I’d accepted my fate, I let the guards escort me back. But I couldn’t help laughing once inside.
After the bodyguards forcibly pushed me into the villa, a mechanical system voice abruptly sounded in my mind:
“Host’s desire to return is strong. Initiate world departure protocol?”
“Confirm.”
“Select termination method.”
“Jump from the rooftop. Die where Scarlett and the Youngs can see me. I want them to witness it.”
“Generating scenario… Death compensation locked: 0-000 Million USD. Effective upon return. Execute?”
“Execute.”
This was my twenty-fifth year since I had transmigrated in this world, and the seventh since the real Young heir, Liam, was found.
When I first crossed over, I thought I’d hit the jackpot. An orphan who lost both parents, suddenly gifted with loving parents, a protective sister, and a family among the city’s elite.
That feeling lasted until my eighteenth birthday, when Dad brought Liam home.
Everything changed.
Now, every window and door in the mansion was bolted shut with steel. Four expressionless guards stood in the hallway.
Mrs. Wilson, the housekeeper, watched me like I was a thief, a baseball bat ready to swing at my legs.
I shifted forward just half a step. A crushing blow slammed into my right thigh.
“Thud!” My knee hit the carpet with a sickening sound, pain lancing up my spine.
“Master Lucas,” Mrs. Wilson sneered, shaking the bat. “Miss Victoria was clear. Defy her, and we break your legs and toss you in the alley.” She suddenly shrieked downstairs, “Stop him! Master Lucas is trying to ruin the engagement!”
In an instant, three bodyguards raised their rubber batons and closed in.
I threw myself backward, falling to the ground. The moment my back hit the hard floor, a short, sharp cry escaped my throat..
“Are you insane? I wasn’t trying to escape at all!”
My nails dug deep into my palms as I stared at the baton in Mrs. Wilson’s hand, my voice trembling.
“I was just walking around my own house! Why did you hit me?”
“Playing the obedient boy now, Master Lucas?” Mrs. Wilson smirked, revealing a crooked front tooth.
“Who knows if you’ll suddenly go crazy and charge out?”
She raised her voice sharply. “Think we’re blind? That rage in your eyes! You want to ruin Master Liam’s engagement!”
Two bodyguards were already approaching me, their rubber batons slicing through the air with a sharp whistle. I staggered back.
“Wait!” I flung up a hand in panic. “Aren’t you afraid I’ll tell Mom and Dad—”
“Hah!” Mr. Wilson, lurking in a corner, snorted. “I’ll just say you tried to force your way out to cause trouble, then jumped from the third floor and broke your leg. Plenty of witnesses.”
The whoosh of batons intensified. A sickening crack echoed from my right shoulder blade.
I stumbled and collapsed onto the carpet, dark red blood seeping into the cream-colored wool. Another baton struck the side of my knee. The intense pain made my vision go black, a buzzing filling my ears.
“If I die today…” I rasped, my voice unrecognizable, bloody fingers clenched, “…the Youngs won’t spare you…”
“You dare invoke the Young name?” Mrs. Wilson stomped on my bleeding calf. “If not for the Master’s kindness, a mistaken bastard like you would’ve been thrown into an orphanage long ago! Miss Victoria pleaded to keep you like a pet dog, and this is how you repay her? Trying to steal Master Liam’s fiancée?”
Through the agony and dizziness, I understood. They weren’t afraid I’d cause trouble. They wanted me dead.
Terror seized me. This wasn’t the death I’d chosen! What if I couldn’t return?
Before death could claim me, I instinctively lunged towards the altar table.
The eternal lamp specially bought for Liam fell to the floor, sparks landing on the curtains.
The moment flames licked the curtains, I dragged my broken leg and rolled away.
“Stop him!”
“Master Lucas is setting a fire!”
Amid the shouts and the crackling of flames, I tumbled down the steps. Blood soaked through my pant leg, leaving a trail on the ground.
In the chaos, I made it out the front door.
Security cameras covered the grounds outside. They didn’t dare follow.
By the time I crawled to the center of the ring road, I could no longer make out the expressions of passersby.
Seventeen taxis sped past. Finally, a black sedan screeched to a halt in front of me.
“Young man! You’re bleeding badly!” A man leaned out from the passenger seat. “Let me get you to a hospital!”
“Thank you…” I clutched his sleeve. “Please… take me to the Grand Plaza Hotel.”
The hotel was a family property. The guards knew me. Seeing my state, they didn’t dare stop me.
When I burst into the banquet hall, Victoria and my parents were greeting guests, faces radiant with joy.
Until they saw me, covered in blood. Their smiles froze.
Dozens of cameras were aimed at the entrance to the banquet hall. When I appeared at the top of the stairs, dragging my mangled leg, a bank of spotlights suddenly blazed to life.
“Stop him!” someone yelled, but the flashes only intensified.
Victoria practically flew to me, her expensive couture gown smeared with my blood.
“Have you lost your mind?”
Her voice vibrated with disbelief and fury. “Who let you in? Useless idiots!”
She whirled on the security detail. “You couldn’t contain a cripple?!”
Then she leaned in close, her voice low but carrying. “Is this deliberate? Making yourself look like this… just to ruin Liam’s wedding?”
My mother stumbled out of the crowd, grabbing my wrist, her voice shaking. “Lucas, your clothes… is that blood?”
“Yes, it’s blood. All mine,” I said, locking eyes with her. “The men your dear Liam sent beat me half to death. I barely managed to escape the house.”
Dad’s face darkened instantly. His hand shot out. Crack! Blood trickled from the corner of my mouth.
“You shameless wretch!” Dad’s voice shook with rage. “You’re just jealous of Liam, slandering him like this!”
Mom clutched my other hand, panic-stricken. “Lucas, is it true? Who hurt you?”
Victoria yanked Mom behind her. “Don’t listen to his lies!” She turned to the crowd, her tone definitive. “That’s obviously stage blood! He loves playing the victim for the cameras!”
She seized my wrist, dragging me roughly towards the exit. My broken leg caught on a step edge. The bone tore through skin and fabric, white shards glistening with shreds of flesh and blood.
The room fell utterly silent.
Mom covered her mouth, tears streaming silently. “Oh God, Lucas… your leg…”
Dad’s eyes flickered, a flash of something like pain quickly masked.
Victoria froze, her anger replaced by shock.
Scarlett pushed through the crowd. Her gaze landed on my mangled leg, a frown creasing her brow. “Lucas?”
I lifted my head, blood masking my face, a fresh trickle at my lips. I stared at Scarlett, my voice hoarse but clear. “You’re just in time. I have a few questions.”
Liam strode over in his custom suit, unable to hide the panic in his eyes or the tremor in his lips.
“Lucas, today is the most important day of my life,” he choked out. “Do you have to destroy it? Why? Why do you always target me? I have nothing left! Why take Scarlett too?”
He stepped closer, fists clenched. “I just want Scarlett. Can’t you… can’t you just let us be happy?”
Victoria moved as if to help me up. “I’ll take you to the hospital.”
“Victoria!” Liam cried out, voice breaking. “The ceremony is about to start! You can’t leave!”
Victoria glanced back at me, then turned to Liam. “It’s just another one of Lucas’s ploys. He wants to ruin your engagement.”
She shoved my hand away violently, sending me staggering again.
“Lucas Young, you’re insane!” Victoria’s voice dripped with disgust. “To frame Liam, you’d cripple yourself? You’re pathetic!”
“Get yourself to a hospital,” she said coldly. “Don’t worry, the Youngs won’t tolerate a cripple. We’ll find the best doctors. But not now. Not here.”
I took a deep breath, gritted my teeth, and pushed myself upright against the wall. Pain surged like a tide, but I knew this wasn’t my chosen death. I had to stand.
“Scarlett,” I said, my voice trembling but firm, staring directly at her. “Being with me… it was just a bet with your friends, wasn’t it? You never truly loved me. Is that right?”
“I’m sorry.”
I couldn’t hold back the tears anymore. They tracked through the blood and grime on my face, leaving dark streaks on my ruined white suit.
Once, I thought I was the happiest person alive. After losing my parents, I found a new family here – kind, accepting parents, a sister, Victoria, who cherished me, and Scarlett, who promised to love me forever. They filled the void, gave me a home.
Turns out, it was all an illusion, fleeting and false.
I could have stayed. Pretended nothing happened. Lived alongside these so-called family members. After all, they gave me eighteen years of carefree life. I’d grown accustomed to their warmth.
But now, I just want to go back. Return to my original world, to the me who was lonely but at least real.
“One last question.”
I lifted my head, my vision blurry, looking at Scarlett. My voice shook but held steady.
“Why did you have to wait until today, the engagement day, to tell me the truth?”
Scarlett’s eyes darted away. She glanced at Liam. “Because Liam was worried you couldn’t handle it. He asked me to keep it quiet.”
I suddenly laughed, the sound echoing hollowly in the banquet hall, stark and jarring.
“So kind. My brother,” I said, wiping tears that kept coming. “To spare my feelings, he arranged for me to learn about this sick bet on his engagement day.”
I pointed at Liam, my voice sharpening. “To make me stand here like a complete fool, watching you get engaged. Wasn’t that just pure humiliation?”
“That’s a lie!” Liam cried out, tears flowing freely. “I’m not that calculating!”
I shook my head, a bitter smile twisting my lips. “Not calculating? Since you came home, how many ‘suicide attempts’ have there been?” I paused, my voice turning icy. “Did you ever actually die? Someone who truly wants to die… needs rescuing every single time?”
“Shut up! How dare you say that to Liam!” Scarlett screamed, her face contorted with rage.
“A lie?” I sneered. “Then tell me, Scarlett, why after every ‘attempt,’ the doctors found him perfectly fine? Why did the whole family swarm around him each time, while I stood on the sidelines?”
Dad’s face was thunderous. He raised his hand again, but Mom clung to his arm.
“Enough! Lucas, you’re badly hurt! Stop this!” Mom pleaded.
“Dad,” I turned to him, my voice thick with deep disappointment. “I’m your son too. The one you raised, doted on since childhood. Just because you later found out there was a mistake at the hospital, does that make me inherently guilty, inherently untrustworthy? What does the your mistake have to do with me! What did I do wrong!”
“And you claim Liam ordered this?” Dad scoffed. “You expect me to believe such an outrageous lie?”
Liam suddenly clutched his head, swaying backward.
“Lucas, how can you slander me like this? Are you trying to kill me?” His voice was a pitiful whine, dripping with false anguish.
I looked at him, a cold smile touching my lips. “If you’re so desperate to die, Liam, come with me to the rooftop right now. We’ll jump together. How about it?”
Scarlett’s eyes flashed with fury. She lunged forward, shoving me hard. “Go die alone! If you upset Liam again, I’ll never forgive you!”
“Get out!” Scarlett spat, her voice laced with revulsion. “You make me sick!”
I struggled to my feet, dragging myself step by painful step towards the elevators.
“Lucas! Where are you going? The exit is that way!” Mom called after me, but Dad held her back.
“Let him go,” Dad said coldly. “Wherever he wants. Liam’s wedding is what matters.”
I finally reached the elevator. As the doors slid shut, they sealed away those false, smiling faces.
I took the elevator to the hotel’s top floor, stepping out onto the roof’s edge. The night wind whipped my suit, bringing a chill.
I checked my phone. Fifteen minutes until the system’s designated death time.
Below, the wedding reception was ending. The Youngs were seeing guests off. Suddenly, a guest pointed upwards, shouting, “Someone’s going to jump!”
Screams erupted. Panic spread.
I saw police arrive swiftly, deploying an airbag below.
“Who brings this kind of bad luck on Liam’s wedding day? At our hotel!” Victoria raged.
“Ms. Young, it’s Master Lucas!” someone answered.
The Youngs’ faces turned ashen.
Scarlett scoffed. “Lucas? He’s just putting on a show. If he dares to die, I’ll eat shit!”
Liam trembled. “Why won’t Lucas leave me alone? Why does he want me dead? Maybe… maybe I shouldn’t have come back! Maybe I shouldn’t be alive!”
“Just send Lucas away,” Scarlett said to the family. “As long as he is here, Liam can’t have peace.”
Dad pondered, then nodded. “Take the airbag away. He won’t jump. This is exactly the attention he wants.”
At the family’s insistence, the police reluctantly removed the safety measure.
Standing on the edge, watching the commotion below, I felt relief. No airbag. This time, death was certain.
I checked my phone. One minute left.
Liam, supported by Scarlett, walked out of the hotel. She looked up, opening her mouth, probably to curse me.
The next second, I stepped off the ledge.
Like a stone, I plummeted towards the ground, landing directly in front of the the Youngs and Scarlett.
Crunch. My body hit the pavement. Blood sprayed, splattering their faces and clothes.
