The moment I confirmed my pregnancy, my husband’s ex-girlfriend, Jessica, deliberately set our house on fire, intending to burn me alive.
Instead of screaming for help, I calmly helped Grandma, who was choking on smoke, to safety.
In my past life, I had screamed desperately in the inferno. Caleb arrived with others and rescued Grandma and me first.
His ex, Jessica, determined to compete with me, charged back into the flames and died covered in burns.
After her death, Caleb said she deserved it for starting the fire and catered to my every whim, soothing my shock.
But after our child was born, Caleb used Jessica’s urn to smash our baby to death.
“It’s your fault, you and your daughter! You made me lose my true love! Go to hell and atone!”
In despair, I took him with me. When I opened my eyes again, I was back in the fire.
…
“Jessica, hold on! I’m coming for you!”
That familiar voice snapped me back. I opened my eyes just as the burning bedroom door crashed down, barely missing my face.
Terrified, I immediately grabbed Grandma and yanked her back into the bedroom.
“Grandma, don’t open the window—you’ll feed the oxygen to the fire!”
I scanned the room, tore a pillowcase, soaked it with bottled water, and ressed it into her hands, miming covering her nose and mouth.
Sirens wailed from the street below. Grandma’s face lit up with hope.
“Don’t be afraid. Caleb’s here with help.”
“We’ll be alright now.”
Seeing her relief, I just looked away.
How could I tell this sweet old woman that her precious kid would later murder his own child for that woman?
The fire roared hotter. I could feel the floor tiles burning beneath my feet.
Just as I got Grandma to a relatively clear spot, Caleb’s voice cut through the chaos outside the door.
“Jessica! Jessica, are you in there?”
“Don’t be scared! I’m here to save you!”
A massive crash echoed as the front door gave way. Through the wall of flames, I saw nothing, but I heard Jessica’s desperate sobs,
“Caleb! I’m trapped on the balcony!”
“Help me! I’m so scared…help me!”
“Everyone, follow me! Forget the sweep—head straight to the balcony for rescue!”
Hearing this, Grandma clutched her chest, her breathing becoming a ragged gasp.
“That little shit… Caleb, that ungrateful bastard… How could he…”
She didn’t finish. Her eyes rolled back, and she slumped against me.
Through the flames, I saw him. Caleb, carrying Jessica away in his arms, like some goddamn hero saving a damsel.
The heat was melting everything. My tears evaporated before they could fall.
This time, I choked back every scream begging to tear out of my throat.
Caleb, this life, I owe you nothing.
As he disappeared with his ex, I tightened the wet cloth over my face, adjusted my grip, and managed to hoist Grandma onto my back.
A sharp, twisting pain shot through my lower abdomen. I gritted my teeth and forced my legs straight.
His child in my womb. His grandmother on my back.
Standing there, being consumed by fire, I heard their voices fading.
“Jessica, was anyone else inside?”
“No one, Caleb! Sophie said she was pregnant and couldn’t handle the stress. We argued, and she locked me in, started the fire, and ran…”
“That psychotic bitch! I’ll make her pay for this!”
My knees almost gave out.
Then, another voice, hesitant,
“Caleb, man, I swear I heard something… in the bedroom.”
“I think someone might still be inside. Could Sophie still be in there…?”
“Jessica just said Sophie set the fire! Why would she stick around?!”
“Everyone, move out! Jessica’s in shock. Getting her to the ER is our only priority!”
Another wave of agony ripped through me. I wanted to ram through the flames.
Suddenly, Grandma coughed violently on my back, revived by the choking smoke. Her grip on my shoulder tightened like a vise.
“Caleb, you little bastard! Your wife and child are trapped! Who the hell are you taking to the hospital?!”
I froze, listening desperately.
But all I heard were retreating footsteps. He was gone.
A giant wardrobe, engulfed in flames, groaned and crashed down, sealing our only exit.
My hands shook as I poured the last of the water onto a towel and gave it to Grandma.
She looked at me, tears streaming down her aged face. Before she could speak, more sirens wailed from downstairs.
The same sound as before.
Caleb was leaving with his Jessica.
The fire closed in. Despair washed over me. This time, we won’t make it.
Grandma gave one last weak cough on my back and went still.
Flames started licking at the hem of my pajamas.
Right at the last possible second, a shout came from outside the blocked door,
“Sophie! Security said they didn’t see you leave! Are you still in there?!”
I finally broke. A raw, guttural cry tore from my lips.
A figure burst through the flames with a fire extinguisher. Relief flooded me, and I collapsed into darkness.
When I opened my eyes again, Grandma and I were safe outside the building complex.
Our rescuer was Caleb’s colleague, Zachary Foster.
His face was smeared black with soot. Seeing me awake, he gave me a tired, lopsided grin.
“Sophie…knew I heard you. Jessica kept saying… the place was empty…”
He finished speaking and crumpled to the ground.
Paramedics swarmed around us, loading us into separate ambulances.
All three of us survived, but Grandma had underlying health issues, and Zachary had inhaled too much smoke, they both remained unconscious.
Caleb csme rushing into the hospital the moment he got news.
He saw me, shoved a nurse aside, and slapped me so hard my head snapped back.
“You sick bitch! How could you be so cruel? Why try to kill Jessica?”
“You weren’t even supposed to be home! Why did you go back? You almost got Zach killed, you know that?!”
“I never imagined marrying such a monster like you! If anything happened to them, you’d be a murderer!”
Fresh from nearly dying, my body still shaking with adrenaline, I crumpled to the floor from the force of his blow.
Behind Caleb, Jessica peeked out, putting on a frail show.
“Sophie… I know you hate me. But did you ever stop to think about the other lives you were risking?”
She leaned weakly against Caleb’s shoulder, breaking into a violent, hacking cough.
Seeing the specks of blood Jessica coughed up, Caleb turned and kicked me hard as I tried to get up, sending me sprawling back onto the cold linoleum.
“You monster! Why didn’t you die in that fire?!”
“I should have dragged Zach to leave you there! Let you burn!”
He glared down at me, pure hatred burning in his eyes.
Jessica, safely tucked in the circle of his arms, gave me a smirk of pure, undiluted malice.
I had no strength left to fight back.
A warm trickle of blood ran down my thighs.
The pain was excruciating. My throat, scorched by smoke, could only rasp a broken whisper,
“Doctor… please… get a doctor…”
Seeing my agony, Caleb sneered.
“Doctor?”
“Did you think about whether the people you tried to murder would even get to see a doctor?”
I just stared at him, the sting of unshed tears burning my eyes.
Before Jessica came back, he had been over the moon about this baby.
He’d painted the nursery early, picked out a name.
Harper James.
Caleb said it was the perfect gift—a piece of him and a piece of me, given to our child.
Now, watching the blood pool beneath me, he simply turned away, shielding Jessica’s eyes.
“Disgusting. Don’t look, sweetheart. It’ll just give you nightmares.”
When I woke again, the sterile white walls had been replaced by gray concrete.
A nurse I’d never seen before noticed my open eyes. She tossed an empty medicine bottle into the trash with a violent clatter, her voice laced with pure disdain.
“Well, aren’t you lucky.”
“Harmed so many people, and all it cost you was a baby. You really landed on your feet, didn’t you?”
My throat felt like it was on fire. I couldn’t speak, forced to endure her scorn.
Seeing my silence, she wrenched the door open and shouted down the corridor.
“The arson suspect is awake! Someone get her transferred out of here! She doesn’t belong in a proper hospital.”
“Daring to harm a hero’s child… Disgusting. It’s a shame the fire didn’t finish you off.”
Two uniformed officers entered without a word. They hauled me upright, and soon, I faced Caleb.
Across a table, his expression was a thundercloud. He spoke like a judge delivering a verdict.
“Sophie, you vicious piece of work.. Attempted murder.”
“Considering you were pregnant, I could push for probation. But prison? That’s where you belong.”
He turned his head away stiffly, as if the very sight of me was contaminating.
I tried to speak, to defend myself, but all that came out was a ragged, hacking cough.
Suddenly, Jessica rushed in, sobbing theatrically, collapsing against Caleb.
“Caleb! I had another nightmare again!”
“I dreamed I was burning… I was trapped and burning alive… I’m so scared…”
Caleb’s expression darkened further. He looked back at me, his eyes blazing.
“Sophie, I can’t imagine how a young girl like Jessica could possibly offend you.”
“Why do you despise her so much? Why keep trying to destroy her?!”
“Her father sacrificed his life on a rescue mission! She’s a hero’s daughter! And you… you dared to…!”
He couldn’t finish, slamming his fist down on the metal table with a bang.
Someone handed me water. I gulped it down, the cool liquid a temporary relief on my scorched throat, and finally managed to rasp out,
“I didn’t start the fire. Jessica did.”
“The one who should be in prison is her. And you, for negligence.”
Caleb slammed the table again, shooting to his feet.
He leaned forward, his eyes drilling into mine.
“Jessica is pure and kind! How dare you smear her name?!”
“She told me everything! It was you! You started the fire over a stupid argument!”
Jessica chose that moment to let out a wail,
“Caleb, she’s trying to frame me again!”
“I’m so scared… I just wanted to stay by your side like a little sister to you… Is that so wrong, Sophie? Do you really need me dead to be satisfied?”
She lunged forward, grabbing my arm and shaking it violently.
I recoiled from her touch in pure disgust. Instantly, Jessica shrieked and threw herself backwards onto the floor.
“Caleb! Help! She pushed me hard!”
Caleb moved in a flash, scooping Jessica up into his arms while his other hand grabbed my shoulder and hurled me to the floor.
“Sophie! How dare you lay a hand on her right in front of me?!”
“Have you lost your mind?!”
“If you weren’t… recovering… I’d have you locked in a cell right now to reconsider your actions!”
I looked up at Caleb, fury coursing through my veins.
His features were the same, the same man who had once promised me the world.
But the illusion was shattered.
In my past life, when Jessica killed herself, he blamed me.
This time, Jessica was alive, and he still blamed me for the fire.
What was the point of this marriage?
I opened my mouth, my voice flat and empty.
“Caleb, I want a divorced. Sue me if you want.”
“Now that the baby’s gone, let’s see if you can actually put me convicted.”
Caleb’s brow furrowed. A strange, hesitant note entered his voice. “What do you mean… gone?”
Looking at him, I almost laughed. It was a hollow, broken sound.
“‘Gone’ means our child is dead.”
“After I carried your grandmother’s life, you kicked it to death.”
Shock flooded Caleb’s eyes. Jessica jumped in immediately, her voice shrill.
“She’s lying! You must have been carrying someone other man’s baby! You were afraid Caleb would find out, so you used the fire to get rid of it!”
A cold, uncontrollable laugh finally escaped me. It sounded unhinged, even to my own ears.
“By that logic, I’m quite the criminal mastermind.”
“I deliberately set my own house on fire, nearly burned myself alive, just to fake a miscarriage?”
“Jessica, is there any lie your twisted mouth of yours won’t spew?”
Jessica’s face flushed crimson, and she burst into theatrical sobs,
“Caleb, she’s slandering me again! I don’t know why she hates me so much…”
She tried to burrow her face into Caleb’s chest, but he stood rigid, his gaze fixed on my abdomen.
He knew my health was fragile. He knew how much we had both wanted this child.
He knew I would never deliberately harm my own baby, no matter how angryI was. .
“Sophie… I didn’t mean to… I just wanted to scare you…to make you see reason…”
“What you did was wrong. Starting a fire… it’s reckless… I lost control…”
“I’m sor…”
I shook my head, cutting him off.
“I don’t want apologies. It’s too late for that.”
“If you think I’m guilty, then lock me up. Open an investigation.”
Caleb gritted his teeth, a flicker of panic in his eyes.
“I didn’t know… I… You need to rest. You should go home.”
Jessica’s head snapped up like a rattle.
“Caleb! She almost killed me!”
“If my parents were alive… they wouldn’t let me suffer like this…”
“Mom… Dad… I miss you so much…”
Hearing her cries, Caleb’s expression hardened.
