After eight years of marriage, my wife finally got pregnant.

I bought every parenting books I could find and spent my weekends building a nursery with my own hands.

I’d lie awake at night, dreaming about our beautiful future—the three of us, a real family.

But that dream didn’t last long, it was shattered—by my wife herself.

She told me her first love, Jake Miller, was in liver failure. She’d already terminated the pregnancy so she could be his donor.

I looked at the little wooden rocking horse I’d just finished sanding. And I felt like the world’s biggest fool.

“Jake has liver failure and needs a transplant. I was a match, so I took care of it today.”

“The doctors said pregnant women can’t be donors, so I terminated the pregnancy today.”

I just stared at Lily, waiting for the punchline—for her to say she was joking.

But her cold expression was ice. And I knew how she’d always been about Jake.

She wasn’t asking for my opinion. She was telling me what she’d already done.

I said, my voice shaking. “Lily, we’ve been married for eight years. This was our first baby—we’ve been hoping for this for so long.”

“I built all this… because I thought you wanted it too. I thought we were in this together.”

“And my mother—you know how sick she is. All she wanted to see her grandchild before she passes—you know that.”

Lily let out a short, cold laugh. “A born child is a child. What I carried was just a cluster of cells—not a real life.”

“How can you compare that to Jake’s life? And don’t use your mother as a guilt trip. She’ll be fine. Jake is actually sick.”

“David, I never knew you could be so selfish and cold. I guess I was wrong about you all these years.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. She was acting like I was the villain.

“You killed our child, and you have the nerve to call me selfish?”

“Lily, I’m not even mad about you helping Jake. I’m mad you didn’t talk to me first. You didn’t give me a chance to get tested, or to help find another donor.”

“Liver matches aren’t that rare. We could’ve looked for other options.”

“Did you even think about me—about us—when you made that choice?”

“What do I even mean to you?”

My voice cracked. I was choking on the loss—of the child I’d already loved, and the wife I thought I knew.

Lily showed no remorse. “David, you always say you love me, but if you really loved me, you’d understand why I have to do this.”

“Even though I married you, Jake was my first love. He’s everything I ever dreamed love would be.”

“But don’t think you got nothing. You had me. You got to experience real love. That’s more than most people ever get.”

Hearing that, after almost a decade together—something in me just broke.

In that moment, every bit of warmth I ever felt for her froze solid.

I was done—done forgiving, done excusing.

I looked at Lily, my voice flat and empty. “Lily, you’re so full of yourself. If he weren’t sick, he wouldn’t even remember your name.”

“Face it—you’ve always been his backup plan. His last resort.”

“I’m tired of this. I’m stepping aside. Let’s get a divorce.”

There was no anger left in me, just a hollow certainty.

When you’re hurt enough, you just go numb.

“David, are you serious?” She rolled her eyes, a familiar condescension in her voice. “You’re throwing a tantrum over this? Threatening divorce? Grow up.”

“I know you’re upset about the… situation. I’ll be staying at the hospital with Jake. We can take some time apart for you to clam down.”

“But this is the last time I’ll tolerate you using divorce as a threat. If you dsay it again, I won’t take you back.”

Then she packed a bag and walked out.

She didn’t believe I meant it. She thought I was just being emotional, that I’d eventually come crawling back like I always did.

I guess that’s what always happened before. Every argument ended with me apologizing.

I thought I was being loving, committed. She saw it as weakness.

I don’t know if Lily is just a hopeless romantic or just has a profound victim complex.

Back in college, no matter how horribly Jake treated her, she’d twist it into a sign of his secret affection.

Once someone teased them about dating, and Jake snapped, “I’d never date her.” He was cruel. But Lily said he was just “protecting her reputation.”

There was this girl who liked Jake and bullied Lily constantly, and Jake flirted with the bully, Lily decided he was “distracting” the girl to keep her safe.

There were so many stories like that.

The truth was simple. Jake didn’t care about Lily. She wasn’t even on his radar.

If he weren’t desperate, he wouldn’t even remember she existed.

That’s probably why she married me in the first place—she knew she’d never have Jake, so she settled for me.

Maybe I’m no better. I did my share of foolish things for what I thought was love.

But at least I’m awake now. Nothing she does can hurt me anymore.

My phone rang. It was my cousin. “David… did you know Lily terminated the pregnancy? And she’s donating part of her liver to some guy?”

I asked, “How did you find out?”

“I saw her at the hospital. I was visiting a friend in the same ward as this Jake guy.”

“I saw her waiting on him hand and foot. I told her to take it easy since she’s pregnant, and she just casually said she’d already terminated it to be his donor.”

“Wait… you knew?”

“I found out last night. But please don’t tell my mom. It would destroy her.”

“You can’t hide it forever. What are you going to do, fake a pregnancy?”

“I’ll tell her gently. She needs time. Just please keep it quiet for now.”

My cousin continued, “My friend told me the guy Lily’s donating to had a girlfriend who was also a match.”

“But she refused to donate—said it was too risky—and dumped him right after.”

“His family’s been trashing her all over the hospital, calling her selfish.”

“Someone asked why his parents don’t donate—family matches are better. They went dead slient.”

“If his own family and girlfriend won’t help, why is Lily playing the hero? She terminated a wanted pregnancy for this? Is she insane?”

“David, you’ve put up with a lot. You know how she treats you. I’ll say no more—just think carefully about what you want.”

After that call, my resolve to divorce Lily solidified into something unshakable.

Two weeks passed since I asked for the divorce.

Lily hadn’t contacted me once. Like she’d vanished.

Then she posted on social media, “Surgery was a success. Now a part of me will always be with you.”

Someone commented, “I thought you were pregnant? Did you have the baby already?”

Lilys public reply made my blood run cold, “Not a birth. I lost the baby. I donated part of my liver to save a life.”

My stomach dropped. I called her immediately—but before I could dial, my aunt called.

“David, get to Third Hospital now! Your mother collapsed!”

My mom had seen the post.

She has a weak heart—the shock made her collapse.

Luckily, my aunt was there and got her to the hospital.

When I arrived, my mom was still in treatment. The doctor handed me a bill.

But when I went to pay, I discovered our joint account was empty .Over $25,000, gone.

I knew instantly—Lily had taken it.

I tried calling her. No answer.

Her post was tagged at Third Hospital. I went to the front desk, my voice tight. “I need the room number for Lily Smith. She’s a patient here.”
