It’s been three years since I turned into a fool, and the Lawson sisters, Chloe and Sophia, are finally grown tired of me.

They kicked me out of the old mansion, my suitcase bursting open, stuff scattering everywhere.

Shoved hard, I stumbled, my head cracking against the wet, slick steps outside. A dull, awful pain bloomed.

Chloe Lawson looked at me with pure disgust. “Ethan Foster, we’ve paid back any debt we owed you. Now get the hell out of our lives and stay out!”

Sophia Lawson snapped at me, “Why are you still here? Move it! If Lucas comes back and sees you still hanging around, it’ll just upset him!”

It was pouring rain outside. I was drenched as I stood helpless in the deluge. While they stood under the porch roof, perfectly dry, not giving a damn about what happened to me.

All because Lucas said he didn’t want to see me living with them anymore, that it made him sad. So they just threw me out.

But… they’re living in my house…

I stayed out in that rain for a full day and night. Didn’t get a single glance of concern from them. The blood from my head wound mixed with the rainwater, streaming down my face and blurring my vision.

A Maybach screeched to a halt right beside me, splashing filthy water all over me.

The driver got out with an umbrella and opened the door for the man in the back.

I looked up. It was Lucas.

He was wearing a sharp black suit, looking pampered and privileged. He seemed genuinely surprised to see me.

“What are you still doing here?”

Then he waved a hand in front of his nose, wrinkling his face in disgust. “Ugh, even the rain can’t wash away that stink of stupidity on you.”

I blinked slowly, my addled brain struggling to process his sarcasm, before I saw him dart towards the front door like an excited sparrow.

Chloe and Sophia came out to greet him, fussing over him for getting a single strand of his hair damp, lovingly drying it with a towel.

But I was drenched and shivering, and they didn’t care one bit.

Lucas grabbed Sophia’s hand, whining, “Honey, why is Ethan still kneeling there? I almost hit him with my car! It gave me such a fright.”

Sophia shot me an icy glare. “Don’t worry about him. It wouldn’t matter if you had!”

Even as a fool, my heart could still hurt.

I didn’t understand. These two who were once so good to me… why did they become so cruel and hateful whenever Lucas was involved?

My head started feeling heavy and fuzzy. I couldn’t hold myself up anymore, crawling forward on my hands and knees.

“Sophia… Chloe…”

Lucas let out a dramatic, “Oh my god! Honey, Ethan is so embarrassing. Such a man crawling on the ground like that.”

Chloe gently fixed his hair, her voice soft. “A fool is a fool, Lucas. Of course he can’t compare to you.”

Hearing that, Lucas gave a sweet, smug smile.

“Honey, let’s go inside. It’s freezing out here.”

They agreed instantly. As the heavy door started to swing shut, I panicked, falling face-first into a puddle, swallowing a mouthful of muddy water, but I still begged.

“Please! Don’t! Please don’t make me leave!”

Chloe and Sophia’s faces tightened with irritation, while Lucas laughed at me without restraint.

“Hahaha! Ethan, you’re so pathetic!”

Pathetic? I didn’t know. I only knew my whole heart belonged to the Lawson sisters. I couldn’t understand why they were abandoning me.

“Don’t look, Lucas, it’s disgusting.”

Chloe covered Lucas’s eyes, shielding him as they walked inside.

I sobbed helplessly, my hands and feet numb with cold.

In that moment, I think I finally understood. Chloe and Sophia wouldn’t be good to me anymore. After all, nobody could truly love a fool.

Their hearts and minds had been completely stolen by Lucas.

Realizing that, a rare, startling clarity flashed through my muddled brain, but it couldn’t fight the throbbing pain in my head. Everything went black.

I woke up in a hospital room, my head bandaged.

Chloe was sitting by my bed, her head propped on her hand as she dozed.

She and Sophia are twins, they shared the same striking features—an elegant, cool beauty that could captivate anyone.

I’d been infatuated with their beauty once. But now, looking at her, I felt… nothing.

Chloe opened her eyes, meeting my gaze. Her surprise quickly turned to annoyance.

She sat up straight, crossing her arms coldly.

“Ethan Foster, you really are an idiot. Staying out in the rain for a day and night. You give yourself a nasty fever, and cracked your head open.”

“Did you think we’d feel sorry for you?”

I turned my head away dismissively, my throat dry and raspy. “I won’t do it again.”

She let out an annoyed huff, and forcefully turned my head back to face her.

“Listen, Ethan. If you stop pulling these stupid stunts, maybe we’ll keep some shred of kindness for you. We might even pay to keep you housed.”

“But if you don’t know your place, don’t blame us for being harsh!”

I almost laughed. They lived in my house, spent my money, and had the audacity to talk about them supporting me.

My own fault. I’d been a fool for three years. Not only did I lose my position as head of the Foster family, I handed over all my assets.

I stayed silent, refusing to engage.

She should have been pleased with my subdued compliance, but she kept studying me, like she sensed something was different.

She opened her mouth to say more, but Lucas arrived then, with Sophia following behind. Chloe immediately stood up, her voice full of concern.

“The hospital is so dreary. Why did you come?”

How ironic. Hospitals where babies are born, and Chloe calls it “dreary.”

She’d twist anything for Lucas, make black seem white.

Lucas held up a thermal container.

“I was worried you’d be tired, honey, looking after Ethan. I made you some tomato soup.”

Chloe gave a faint smile, as if Lucas had moved mountains for her, then turned to scold me.

“Ethan, even a fool should learn to be considerate. If you were half as good as Lucas, we wouldn’t be in this mess!”

I opened my mouth, wanting to ask… Hadn’t I been good to her before? What did all I’d done for her and Sophia count for? They said their debt was paid… Did they really believe that?

Lucas suddenly walked over, took my hand, his face a mask of apology.

“Ethan, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know you were this sick. I shouldn’t have let you stay out in the rain You can hit me, yell at me, I deserve it.”

He looked like he was about to cry. Sophia couldn’t stand seeing him upset. She grabbed my hand and flung it away. The IV needle tore from my skin, sending a streak of blood across the sheets.

I gasped in pain, clutching my hand, and reached for the nurse call button. Sophia stopped me.

“Ethan, enough! Is this Lucas’s fault? Why make him apologize?”

My voice was sharp with anger.

“Did I ask him to?!”

Sophia raised her hand like she was going to hit me.

“You idiot! You’re talking back now?!”

My body flinched instinctively. I knew Sophia wouldn’t actually hit me, but over these three years, she’d used that threat to scare me countless times.

She’d even deliberately mocked my fear to amuse Lucas.

The memory made my eyes burn with humiliation and anger.

Lucas gently tugged Sophia’s sleeve. “Sophia, forget it.”

He looked at me, a smirk playing on his lips. “We can’t argue with a fool, can we? Especially one as pitiful as Ethan.”

Sophia sighed in resignation. “You… you’re just too kind-hearted. Fine, if you say so.”

Then she looked back at me, annoyed. “Tch. Ethan, shouldn’t you thank Lucas for sticking up for you?”

“Lucas is good-natured, he doesn’t hold a grudge. He even insisted on coming to see you.”

I looked up, enunciating each word clearly. “What exactly should I thank him for?”

“Ha! No wonder, with no mother to teach you. You can’t even manage a simple ‘thank you.'”

Hearing Sophia throw my deepest insecurity in my face, right in front of Lucas, I lost it. I threw my pillow at her.

“Get out!”

Sophia was furious. “Ethan Foster, you’re beyond hope. Lucas, let’s go!”

She dragged Lucas out of the room. Chloe got up to leave too.

“I prepaid the hospital bill, Ethan. You’re on your own now.”

Finally alone, I clenched my fist so hard my nails dug into my palm. Tears streamed down my face.

There was a time I treated Chloe and Sophia like family, like my closest friends.

We protected each other, saw each other at our worst.

I thought our bond was unbreakable.

But I was wrong. Hearts change. Nothing was like it was three years ago.

The moment that accident turned me into a fool, Chloe and Sophia changed.

Now that I’m back to normal, I know it’s time to leave. But before I go, I’m taking back everything that’s mine.

I wiped my tears, my expression turning calm and determined. I started making calls, one by one, to my old contacts.

My lawyer, my former assistant, the people I’d strategically placed within the company!

I checked myself out of the hospital. I had my assistant, Will, rent an apartment for me.

I went back to the Foster manor to pack properly. That day, Chloe and Sophia had thrown just a few pathetic items of clothing into my suitcase, which were now ruined.

The clothes didn’t matter. What mattered was the safe in the study, holding bonds and important documents.

Chloe and Sophia had tried to trick the safe’s code out of me when I was dumb, but I’d conveniently forgotten it back then.

Now, its contents were my key to making a comeback.

Standing once more before the imposing gates, I tightened my grip on my suitcase. I will be back, I vowed silently. This place belongs to me.

The door opened. Sophia peered out. Seeing it was me, her relaxed expression twisted into hatred. It stung.

“What are you doing here?”

“To get my things.”

She opened the door wider.

“Oh? Finally came to your senses? Decided to disappear on your own?”

I forced a weak, empty smile. “Yes.”

She finally let me in. I headed straight for the bedroom, figuring out how to get to the study without her noticing.

The phone rang downstairs. Sophia went to answer it. Relieved, I quickly went to the study and emptied the safe.

As I was leaving, Chloe came out and stopped me.

She looked at me, her expression complicated. “Ethan… are you sure about this?”

Sophia called out, “Chloe, why bother with the fool? Lucas is coming! Is your cake done?”

I froze for a second.
