After the human race loses the war, the beastfolk rule over the human lands.
As crown princess, my sister Amber Whitaker is born beautiful and is handed over to the Beast King, Theron Olson, as his concubine.
Compared to her, I’m plain, so they send me to the breeding quarters, where beastmen fight over me and use me like a breeding machine.
However, Amber doesn’t fare well either. She’s too gentle for palace schemes. Before long, the other women frame her, and she dies.
As for me, pregnancy after pregnancy wears my body down until it’s too weak to go on, and I die filled with hatred.
Then, everything blurs. When Amber and I open our eyes, we stare at each other in shock and realize we’re back on the very day the human race falls.
This time, I hold her hand tightly and say firmly, “Let me serve the Beast King instead!”
On the night, Theron takes me to his bed. “You look so slim, yet you’re surprisingly full. Are you afraid?”
With that, he strips away my clothes and casts off his own.
One glance makes my breath hitch. I’ve seen beastmen’s packages before, but I never expected Theron to have two!
Chapter 1
“Aurora, Amber, only one of you can be sent to serve the Beast King.”
The moment I heard that line, I knew I had come back to life.
I was right back on the day the human race lost, and my sister Amber Whitaker was to be handed over to the Beast King, Theron Olson.
In our previous life, the beastfolk crushed our armies, took our cities, and turned the survivors into property.
Amber, the crown princess, was born beautiful and handed over to Theron as his concubine.
Compared to her, I was ordinary, so they sent me to the breeding quarters, where beastmen fought over me and used me like a breeding machine.
However, Amber didn’t fare well either. She was too soft for palace schemes, and before long, she was framed by the other concubines and died.
I struggled on for longer. When the news of Amber’s death reached me, I was lying beneath a beastman.
Pregnancy after pregnancy drained what little strength I had, and in the end, I died exhausted and full of rage.
This time, I refused to let our story run the same course!
My father, King Rowan Whitaker, waited for our answer.
Amber pressed her lips together, ready to give the same answer as before.
I quickly caught her hand. “Let me serve the Beast King this time!”
She stared at me, stunned.
I held her gaze. “You’re too kind, and you don’t know how to win his heart. The palace will eat you alive. I may not be beautiful, but I know how to survive. Let us switch places. Maybe that’s how we break this dead end.”
“But…” she hesitated, fear crowding her voice.
I clasped her hands firmly and gave her a reassuring look.
Amber had been raised like a crown jewel, taught to rule rather than to vie for a man’s heart. Even if she were reborn, she would still be the same.
I grew up on scraps and palace schemes. Years in the breeding quarters had taught me exactly how beastmen thought and what they desired, even if I wasn’t pretty.
Amber saw I wouldn’t bend and finally nodded. “If you go to him, promise me you’ll stay alert. Don’t fall into someone else’s schemes like I did!”
I nodded. “Don’t worry, I won’t. But it means you may have to go to the breeding quarters.”
She looked like she wanted to say something, but I cut her off with a tilt of my head toward the fox pelt on the wall.
“Beastfolk are sharp to scent. When you get there, rub fox musk under your arms. They can’t stand the smell. It’ll keep them away and kill their interest.”
Amber’s eyes became red-rimmed at my words. “This time, we must change our fate!”
Chapter 2
After we made our choice, we turned and told Dad.
He looked at me with worry. “The Beast King favors beauty. If Amber goes, he might dote on her for her looks. If you go…”
I knew exactly what he was worried about. He had thought the same way in the previous life.
In the previous life, Amber was given to Theron. She caught his notice for a while, but lost it because she never learned how to win him over. In the end, she died in the palace, and our family paid the price.
“Dad, don’t worry. I won’t let you down,” I told him.
He saw the resolve in my eyes and finally sighed. “Very well. If this is your choice, there is little I can do. Just promise me… you’ll live through it!”
Once the decision was made, Amber and I went our separate ways.
She looked back at the capital one last time, then surrendered herself to the beastfolk envoys and was taken to the breeding quarters.
Meanwhile, I climbed into a carriage headed for Theron’s territory.
After the war, Theron had built a new palace on human land.
I sat with my fists clenched and promised myself this time wouldn’t end the same.
The carriage reached the palace, and they quartered me in a remote wing.
I expected a summons within days. Instead, a month passed, and I never saw even a shadow of Theron.
After the war, many noble families sent their daughters to the palace. Surrounded by them, Theron could have forgotten me, even though I was a princess.
Perhaps Amber had endured the same waiting before he finally noticed her and made her a favorite for her face.
But I wasn’t Amber. When I wanted something, I went after it.
Behind the King’s hall, the garden lay buried in snow. I danced in red, not with the delicate grace of courtly dances, but with the bold, defiant power of a warrior’s dance.
I spun the blade and thrust it forward.
Footsteps stopped nearby, but I pretended not to hear, letting the dance carry me on as the red moved through the white garden.
Then, I turned, raised the blade, and pointed it at the figure in the shadows. “This is the King’s private wing. Who are you? What are you doing here?”
The man was stunned for a moment, with his fingertip at his mouth. He studied me before a smile tugged at his lips. “I haven’t seen anyone like you in this palace.”
I still didn’t know who he was. I edged the point closer, my gaze turning cold. “I’m the King’s concubine. How dare you speak to me like that? Guards, seize him!”
He blinked, then his smile widened, almost sincere. “I’m the King. Which wing do you reside in? How is it I’ve never seen you before?”
I stared at him, my manners forgotten as I backed away a few steps, probably looking like a startled rabbit trying to bluff. “You… You’re the King?”
He wasn’t angry. Instead, he seemed amused by my shock. Before I could drop to my knees, he caught my arm and pulled me against his chest.
My heartbeat thudded against him. Heat rushed to my face, and I couldn’t decide whether to look up or down.
He laughed, lifted me effortlessly into his arms, and carried me toward the wing.
“What are you doing?”
In my panic, I forgot my manners and spoke to him as if he were any other man.
The attendants lowered their gazes, not daring to look up.
Theron didn’t spare them a glance. He swatted my backside lightly, a smile tugging at his mouth.
“What else would I want?” he said. “Of course I want to enjoy what’s mine!”
Chapter 3
Theron carried me into his private chambers.
He dropped me onto the bed, and my body turned soft and inviting as he looked down at me with a heat that made my stomach twist.
I swallowed my disgust and forced a coy smile. “No, we can’t do it here…”
He laughed, caught my chin between his fingers, and tipped my face up. “Why not here? I want to have you now.”
He leaned in and loosened the ties of my dress. Silk slid away, and the cool air found my skin. His gaze hardly moved from me.
“You look so slim, yet you’re surprisingly curvy,” he murmured.
I let color rise to my cheeks, playing shy even as my pulse raced.
His gaze lingered on me, and it looked as if he was barely holding himself back.
“I want you now. Are you afraid?” he asked.
“I.. I’m not,” I said, though my eyes glistened with unshed tears.
The contradiction only seemed to please him, and he laughed again.
In the palace, most were crude beastwomen or timid human maidens who cowered when they saw him. I was different, and that made me far more interesting to him.
“You’re different. I like that,” he whispered.
With that, he stripped off my clothes and shed his own right after.
I caught a glimpse that made my breath hitch. I had seen beastmen’s packages before, but I never expected Theron to have two!
“Still not afraid?” he asked, his eyes fixed on me.
I took a deep breath and said, “No.”
Curiosity outweighed fear, and I reached out to see if what I saw was real.
Theron couldn’t help but curve his lips when he saw this.
The other women had fainted the moment they saw him bare, before he even touched them. I was the only one who hadn’t collapsed, bold enough to reach out and touch him.
His hands closed over my shoulders and pressed me back into the sheets. “You’re playing with fire…”
