Penelope pretends not to care and still marries me. Yet, she proceeds to trample all over me during our five years of marriage, blaming me for Arthur’s death.
When I can’t take it anymore and ask for a divorce, she chooses to end both our lives.
The next time I open my eyes, I realize that I’ve been transported back in time to the day of the yacht accident.
I decide to forfeit my chance of survival this time, letting the man Penelope loves the most take my place.
Chapter 1
“Charlie, get on,” Penelope Griffith said to me.
When I noticed that I had travelled back in time, the yacht that we were on was already beginning to sink.
The lifeboat on the yacht only had two vacant spots. Among the three of us, Penelope was the only one who knew how to operate it, so it went without saying that she would occupy one of the seats.
As for the two of us who were left, Penelope ultimately extended her hand toward me after some serious consideration. However, I took a step back, determined to reject Penelope’s request.
“You should save Arthur first, Penelope.”
I didn’t want to shoulder the blame for someone else’s death in this life.
Penelope seemed to breathe a sigh of relief upon hearing my words, the deep furrow between her brows smoothing out. She swiftly grabbed Arthur Johnson’s hand and dragged him onto the lifeboat.
“I chose to save you first because you’re my fiancé, Charlie,” she explained. “But since you want to save Arthur first, you’ll just have to wait here. I’ll bring help to save you. Wait here for me.”
She took Arthur away with her after she was done speaking, not even sparing a single glance back at me, as if worried that I would change my mind.
How laughable. Did she think that everyone was like her?
In my past life, Penelope had taken me with her as we escaped the ocean, leaving Arthur alone on the yacht.
The moment we reached land, she immediately contacted the coast guard and asked for help, but Arthur had drowned regardless. His corpse was all that was left when he was fished out of the ocean.
In the beginning, she didn’t show any signs of something being amiss when she learned the news. She calmly handled Arthur’s funeral matters and donated a large sum of money to the Johnsons to comfort them. Her only request was for Arthur’s final resting place to be in a location with beautiful scenery.
Naturally, I didn’t deny her wishes. I even asked her if she wanted to push back our wedding date.
However, she had firmly rejected my suggestion. I could still remember how she had gripped my hand, saying, “We have to get married, Charlie!”
I only found out later why she had been so determined to marry me. She wanted to torture me, wanting me to repent for Arthur’s death for the rest of my life.
However, I had nothing to do with Arthur’s death. I wasn’t responsible for his demise.
I immediately began to formulate a plan to save myself as I watched their silhouettes grow smaller in the distance. After all, I had no way of knowing if Penelope would actually bring the coast guard to help me.
In my past life, the one who was stranded on the yacht was her beloved best friend, Arthur. It was why she had made a police report the moment she had a signal on her phone. This time, Arthur was safe by her side, so there was a chance that she would forget all about me.
After all, the man she wanted to save in both lives was Arthur and only Arthur.
Penelope and Arthur grew up together. No one else could compare to him, considering how they had spent so many years together. She had only chosen to save me because she knew that she would be criticized if she saved Arthur first instead of me, her fiance.
It was why she chose to save me instead of Arthur, despite how they had feelings for each other.
Penelope had ended up regretting her choice for the rest of her life, so I decided to make her choice for her in this life. She should be grateful to me.
Chapter 2
I watched Penelope’s and Arthur’s silhouettes until they disappeared from my line of sight before I hastily put a plan together to save myself.
Although the yacht was sinking, there was still a lot of useful equipment. I rushed into the cabin as the water level continued to rise, looking for the lifebuoys and lifejackets.
I didn’t know how to swim in my past life, but I still wanted to play on the beach, so I had prepared several lifebuoys beforehand. Fortunately for me, they would come in handy at that moment.
I grabbed all the lifebuoys before hastily putting on the lifejacket. After inflating all the lifebuoys, I tossed them over myself. I then grabbed several packets of chocolate and bottles of water.
When the yacht was nearly submerged in the water, I took a deep breath before starting to swim toward land. Even though I was in a deep-sea area, fishermen often appeared nearby to catch fish, so I wasn’t in a completely deserted place. I would be saved if I managed to come across a fishing boat.
Unfortunately, it was the middle of the night. Even if a fishing boat were to show up, its loud engines may drown out my cries for help. But I wasn’t willing to give up and continued swimming in the beach’s direction.
However, I was faced with another unexpected event. There hadn’t been a single cloud in the sky in the afternoon, but now, storm clouds were beginning to gather above me.
It had been the same in my past life. The storm that arrived not long after had increased the rescue efforts’ difficulty, which ultimately ended with Arthur’s death when the coast guard failed to save him.
In this life, I swam with all my might even as I gazed at the ocean that stretched endlessly into the horizon. After swimming for about an hour, I finally spotted another yacht moving languidly along the ocean’s surface.
I swiftly raised my arms and started yelling at the people on the yacht, “Help me! Can anybody hear me? Help me! Help me, please!”
Rain began to fall from the sky as I raised my voice. The drizzle rapidly turned into a rainstorm in a matter of minutes. Hopelessness gripped my heart as I watched the yacht move further and further away from me, but I didn’t give up and continued to scream for help.
“Save me! Somebody save me!”
Just as I was about to fall into a pit of despair, a person appeared on the yacht. The woman switched on a torchlight and aimed it at the ocean’s surface. She had heard my cries for help. I was about to be saved!
Unbridled joy surged through my heart in an instant. I hastily swam in the direction of the torchlight’s rays, still yelling, “Help! Help me! Save me, please!”
Using the last of my strength, I kept swimming until I reached the side of the yacht. A ladder was dropped down for me. I nearly slipped from the rungs several times as I struggled to climb it.
My legs turned boneless the moment I climbed onto the yacht. My entire body crumpled, and my knees nearly hit the deck when a pair of gentle hands supported me and kept me on my feet.
“Are you alright?” the woman asked.
I breathed a long sigh of relief before answering, “I’m fine. Thank you.”
I was leaning my whole body against her. Swimming for an extended period of time had stripped me of my strength.
The woman frowned upon hearing my words, giving me a once-over. She continued supporting me as she guided me into the yacht’s cabin. She led me into one of the rooms before offering a clean set of clothes for me to change into.
“You’re completely soaked. You should change your clothes.”
“Okay.”
I stripped myself of my wet pajamas after she left the room. The yacht had started sinking too suddenly, so I didn’t even have time to change into proper clothes.
There was a series of knocks on the door after I was done changing. I walked over and opened the door.
The woman entered the room while carrying a bowl of soup. She placed it on the table and gestured for me to eat it.
I took a good look at her then. She had pretty and defined features, and she carried herself with a gentle but firm demeanor. She also seemed to be surrounded by a righteous air.
I was starving, so I only addressed her again after I was done scarfing down the soup. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Charlie Brant. Thank you very much for saving me.”
The woman introduced herself as Sophie Frendell. She then scrutinized my wet hair and the barely visible cuts on my hands.
“I’ll dry your hair and bandage your wounds for you,” she said.
I was confused by her sudden offer.
“The ocean is filled with bacteria,” she explained. “If we don’t disinfect your wounds in time, they may get infected.”
“I see. Thank you.”
Sophie grabbed a towel and draped it over my head before beginning to dry my hair gently. When she was done, she dabbed at the wounds on my hands with iodine.
I watched her dry my hair and bandage my wounds, warmth suddenly spreading in my heart.
Chapter 3
At that moment, I recalled an incident in my past life.
Not long after I married Penelope, she returned home drunk one night. As I supported her back to her room, I had simply advised her to cut back on her drinking, but she became infuriated with me and shoved me to the ground.
I lost my balance and fell. The back of my head collided against the floor, fresh blood spurting from the point of impact in an instant. I cried out in pain as I stared at the blood staining my hands.
Penelope’s glare was glacial. Her voice was icy when she asked, “Does it hurt? I hope it does. Arthur must have experienced pain a thousandfold worse than yours when he died!
“He’s dead! He’ll never return from the depths of the ocean! He never would have drowned if I hadn’t chosen to save you that time. Charlie Brant, everything is all your fault!”
I stared at her in disbelief as the blood continued to flow from my head. My heart felt like it was slowly turning to ice. I couldn’t believe the words that were coming out of her mouth.
A long time passed before I spoke. “The yacht was sabotaged by your rivals, Penelope. You’re also the one who asked me to get on the lifeboat. How dare you blame me for what happened? You’re being utterly ridiculous!”
The drunken look on Penelope’s face had completely disappeared, but her icy expression had intensified. “I never agreed to this marriage from the very beginning, Charlie. If you didn’t tell Grandma that you liked me, I wouldn’t have been forced to marry you.”
I burst out laughing and looked at Penelope like she was a joke. “So, what you’re trying to say is that I’m the cause of everything that happened?
“Instead of pinning the blame on me, you should blame your rivals and your family for pressuring you. You’re acting like a complete madwoman right now.”
I turned around and left after saying my piece. I then hailed a cab and headed to the hospital by myself to get my wound treated.
From that day onward, my relationship with Penelope turned into a cold war. I also never showed my vulnerable side to her ever again.
However, at that moment, a stranger was treating me gently because she was afraid of hurting me. I could feel tears stinging my eyes and quickly looked to the side. Inhaling deeply, I suppressed the tears that threatened to stream down my face.
“Thank you.”
Sophie lifted her head and smiled. “You’re welcome.”
“Are you there, Ms. Frendell?”
A voice suddenly resounded through the door. A bespectacled man, who was dressed in pajamas, stood at the doorway. When he spotted me, his eyes raked over me as he took in my condition.
“You called me just now and told me that someone had fallen into the ocean. Is it him?” the man asked.
Sophie nodded and turned to look at me. “This is the yacht’s onboard doctor, Dr. Justin Kirk. He’ll conduct a check-up on you so we can get a better idea of your current condition.”
I nodded.
Sophie moved to the side so that Justin could approach me. He conducted a simple check-up and asked me a few questions. After concluding that I hadn’t suffered many physical wounds and had just spent too much time treading water, he rose to his feet and reported his findings to Sophie.
“Mr. Brant’s overall condition is fine. He’s just exhausted from spending too much time in the ocean. He’ll get better once he gets adequate rest.”
Sophie nodded before sending Justin on his way. They stopped at the entrance and exchanged a few whispered words with each other.
I looked outside while they were conversing with each other. The building storm had turned the ocean’s surface into an endless stretch of darkness, turning the waters murky. I felt grateful that I was no longer outside.
I then directed my gaze back to the door. Sophie returned to my side after sending Justin away. She said gently, “The yacht will be docking soon. Where do you live? I’ll send you back home.”
I was suddenly overwhelmed with the urge not to go home. Besides, my parents weren’t home most of the time. Even if I returned home, there was no guarantee that I would see them.
Furthermore, they didn’t really care about me. They wouldn’t even bother asking me what I was up to, even if I didn’t return home for a whole month.
As for Penelope, we died together in my past life, so it was highly likely that she had also travelled back in time just like me. She would probably stay by Arthur’s side for the rest of her days in this life.
In my past life, although I had been married to her for five years, she never once brought me to any events, and she never slept in the same room as me. Near the end of our relationship, she became completely disinterested in even speaking to me.
Every time someone asked about me, her expression would twist into one of disdain. In the end, I became our social circle’s laughingstock.
In this life, I would allow Penelope and Arthur to live the rest of their lives together.
I looked at Sophie. There was a hint of pleading in my voice when I explained, “I don’t have anywhere to go. Can you take me in for a few days?”
I pinned her with a pleading stare when she didn’t respond.
If I remembered correctly, Sophie was the Frendell family’s heiress. In my past life, when I had asked for a divorce, she was the only one who helped me. I knew that she couldn’t be a bad person since she had helped me in both lives.
Seeing how pitiful I looked as I gazed at her, she suddenly lowered her head and stared at me with eyes that seemed to be burning with emotion.
“I’m not a good person,” she said. “You’ll have to bear the consequences if you want to come with me.”
I could smell the scent of roses wafting from her because of our sudden close proximity. My head spun at how good she smelled.
“Alright. You can ask anything of me.”
“Really?”
“Of course!”
I stared at her unwaveringly until she suddenly smiled.
The yacht eventually reached the shore. I could feel myself getting sick with a fever because of the extended amount of time I had spent floating in the ocean.
A familiar voice rang out when Sophie helped me get off the yacht.
“Charlie? Is that really you?”
It was Penelope, and she was surrounded by several police officers, who looked like they were just about to embark on a rescue mission.
She dashed toward me when she spotted me, looking at me with worried eyes. “Are you okay, Charlie?”
I looked at her icily before retorting, “Do I look okay to you?”
