After three years of relentless pursuit, I finally won over Logan—a guy who had never shown the slightest interest in women—and he cherished me like I was his entire world.
On the eve of our wedding, I accidentally overheard one of his friends teasing him, Logan, are you really ready to step into the grave of marriage for Bella? And what about Joann? She’s chased you for so many years. Don’t you feel anything for her?
Logan’s voice was cold. “If we hadn’t grown up together, I wouldn’t even want to see Joann’s face. She could never compare to Bella, ever.”
So, I held onto dreams for our future, and I married him.
Two years later, at our daughter’s hundred-day celebration, Joann came to me in tears, claiming her baby had leukemia—and that only my daughter could save her baby.
Logan’s eyes reddened instantly, and without hesitation, he sent our daughter into the operating room to have her blood drawn.
I struggled in the bodyguards’ grip desperately, crying and pleading, “Logan, Lily is still so little. She can’t take this. She’ll die! Please, use the cord blood I stored for her. I’m begging you, let her go.”
He kicked me aside.
“It’s just a bit of blood. Joann’s baby is dying, and you’re still this selfish? Get out!”
When the surgery was over, he tossed a divorce agreement at me.
“Joann’s child is mine. I have to give them both a name, and I’m taking her abroad for treatment.”
I stared at my silent, motionless daughter in the operating room, my heart turning to ash. “Fine.”
Six years later, Logan saw me in a baby store, holding the hand of my five-year-old son.
Logan reached out with a pained look, trying to pick him up. “Why did you cut Lily’s hair so short? She looks like a boy. What were you thinking?”
Chapter 1
“She’s the same age as Gracie, so why is Lily so much smaller and thinner? Bella, is this how you raise our kid?
“You ran away from home while I was overseas, and now you’ve turned my little princess into someone who looks like she crawled out of a slum. You’re dressed in rags yourself. What’s this—waiting here on purpose to admit your mistakes and beg me to take you back?”
Instinctively, I shielded my son behind me. It was only then that I realized the guy was Logan. And he was holding the hand of a little girl with a look of utter tenderness.
The girl was about Lily’s age. But my Lily… had long been gone.
A sting rose in my nose as my gaze shifted to the woman beside him—flawless makeup, couture from head to toe. She was Joann, Logan’s childhood sweetheart.
Her familiar smile pulled me back to the days when I had first started pursuing Logan.
Back then, everyone said he was untouchable and indifferent to women. My confessions were rejected again and again.
But I was stubborn. As long as he didn’t explicitly forbid me, I believed there was still hope. I kept digging for his likes and dislikes, determined not to give up.
Then Joann approached me herself. She acted all friendly, telling me all about Logan’s preferences, cheering me on, and becoming my “closest friend.”
I stayed up countless nights helping her secure awards and a guaranteed graduate school spot. I even turned down an overseas scholarship. In return, she offered me advice for my confessions.
When I finally succeeded and wanted to share my joy with her, I overheard her laughing with a friend.
“Logan and I come from wealthy families. How could we possibly stomach just anything? Only an idiot like Bella would believe it and get up at dawn every day to prepare food for us. She’s more obedient than my family’s maid.
“Haha, you should’ve seen Logan’s face whenever he threw away the junk she gave him, like he’d just been disgusted by a fly. And honestly, she is like a fly. You just can’t swat her away!”
Hearing her words with my own ears crushed me. Because of my lowly background, I lived under the shadow of that humiliation for a long time.
But now… to me, they were nothing. No longer worth my care.
I took two steps back, met Logan’s gaze, and said flatly, “You’re overthinking. I’m just here to buy toys for my kid.”
Chapter 2
Logan actually thought I’d go to him for help? He thought I’d beg someone like him—a man who ditched his wife and daughter for a mistress? A man who got our daughter killed?
Not a chance.
Logan scowled and spat, “You couldn’t even give me a son. My mother said a few words, and you ran off, sulking all these years? Letting the Rice family’s bloodline roam the streets—if you’re not ashamed, I damn sure am.”
I let out a sharp, icy laugh. So that was it—he thought my son was Lily.
But Lily had died long ago, in a hospital that was supposed to save lives.
She was barely a hundred days old when her own father drained her of blood. I’d been just one wall away, forced by Logan to wait for my poor Lily’s death.
What right did he have to speak her name?
Even the sight of him felt like bad luck. Swallowing the fire in my chest, I turned to leave.
“I don’t need you telling me what to do. He’s not even your—”
Joann walked up, holding her daughter’s hand, and urged the little girl forward.
“Gracie, say thank you to your half-sister. When you were sick, she gave you her blood.”
My eyes burned. Lily’s life had been reduced to something this mistress could toss out like a casual joke.
I glared at Logan, but he avoided my gaze, coughing once. “Gracie and Lily are half-sisters. They should at least meet.”
Then he scooped Gracie into his arms and brushed a loose strand of hair from her forehead with such tenderness it made my stomach turn.
“Go on, Gracie, say hello to your half-sister. When she comes home, teach her a girl’s manners. Show her what kind of dresses a girl should wear. Don’t let her look like some beggar and embarrass our family.”
When he turned back to me, his voice turned razor-sharp. “Can’t even bother to greet me? Look what you’ve taught Lily. No damn manners at all.”
Joann slipped her arm through his and kissed his cheek.
“Don’t be mad, Logan. We all know where Bella comes from. No one taught her any better. Just let it go.”
My nose stung. Something inside me snapped.
“I didn’t know a woman who seduces another woman’s husband could lecture anyone about manners.”
Her eyes reddened, and her voice trembled with practiced sorrow.
“I’m sorry, Bella. I know you hate that Logan chose me back then. But could he really just watch his own child die?
“And besides, Gracie was supposed to be born first. If you’re that angry, take it out on me. But don’t brand Logan as a cheater. He doesn’t deserve that.”
Logan raised his hand as if to strike me, but when he saw the stubborn set of my jaw, he stopped. “Why do you have to bully Joann? I already feel guilty enough for not marrying her back then.”
“Oh? And did you marry me? That marriage certificate… wasn’t it fake?”
The memory tightened my throat, but with my son beside me, I forced back the tears.
Back then, I’d gone abroad to steady myself, but in a moment of collapse, I called Logan. What I heard was their breathless moans, their gasps, and their passion.
When it was over, I cried into the phone. “Logan, why are you doing this to me?”
His voice was cold. “Who the hell do you think you are, to question me?”
Feeling that same despair now, I let out a bitter laugh. “I found out our marriage certificate was fake. Logan, do you know how hopeless I felt when I found out?”
He started to explain, but Joann cut in, “You were going to divorce anyway. This just saved you the trouble. Logan simply didn’t love you. He didn’t do anything wrong.”
She knew me well. She knew how to choose words that pierced straight through, while sounding like kindness.
Chapter 3
But I was no longer that foolish girl who once revolved my world around Logan. I’d found someone who truly loves me.
Not wanting to see them another second, I dialed my favorite contact.
“Hi, honey. I’m tired of shopping. Please have the driver pick us up.”
Logan frowned, his gaze sweeping over me from head to toe.
“You have a driver? These days, anyone who calls a ride thinks they can call it a driver?”
I glanced toward the familiar luxury car parked outside.
“My ride’s here.”
I pressed the remote and the headlights blinked on.
His eyes narrowed, his voice dripping with disdain.
“Didn’t think you’d still be so vain. Back then, you clung to me like your life depended on it. Now you’re nothing but a used woman, still dreaming of marrying into money. I’m not getting back together with a gold-digger like you. But Lily is my child, so I’m taking her.”
He reached for my son again. My son’s face stayed cool as he stepped behind me.
“Mom, I don’t want to go with this strange guy.”
Logan’s expression darkened.
“Don’t you want to claim your heritage, Lily? Keep acting this rude and you’ll be stuck with your poor mother, laboring away for life. Now get over here!”
“My mom and dad are great. I’m not going with you. You’re a bad man! Go away!”
My son, just like his biological father, wasn’t the type to be cowed by a few harsh words. If anything, he stood even firmer by me.
Logan gave a short, cold laugh. “Fine. Keep mouthing off. When you’re on your knees at my door, begging to be taken in, it’ll be too late.”
Then, looking at my son, he sneered.
“Sharp tongue, poor looks. Didn’t inherit a bit of my good genes.”
The moment he left, a driver in the same model car pulled up. My husband’s messages came through.
[Honey, I’ll have the driver take you and Caleb to the restaurant. I’ll be late. Have a work meeting. You must be tired after shopping today. Next time, I’m skipping any business dinners that don’t involve you. I miss you.]
When I reached the entrance of Moonview Restaurant, Logan happened to pull up at the same time. He had his arm around Joann’s waist and gave me a sidelong glance.
“Trying to land yourself a rich husband here? Moonview is the most exclusive restaurant in the city. Not every random person off the street gets in.”
The host blocked me with a look of open contempt.
“You there. Do you have no shame at all, coming here with your kid to seduce our clients? And dressed like that? If it weren’t for the Rice Group’s staff having manners, someone like you would’ve been thrown out already. What an eyesore.”
His words made my face tighten.
“I have a reservation. Private room 888.”
“888 is reserved for Mr. Shenton, liar. Do everyone a favor and take a look in the mirror. What a pathetic woman.”
The host humiliated me in front of everyone. But when Joann walked over, his face transformed into a flattering smile. “Miss Walter, please come in. Your private room is ready. Please enjoy your meal.”
She waved a hand and didn’t go in. Instead, she rested it lightly on my shoulder.
“Bella, you may not be qualified to eat here, but this establishment falls under the Rice Group. If you ask nicely, I could arrange for you to work as a waitress.
“Our servers earn at least sixty dollars a day, excluding tips. Isn’t that better than putting on airs here and making a fool of yourself? So? Have you decided how you’re going to beg me?”
“Don’t bully my mom!” My son stepped in front of me, his face serious and unyielding.
Logan hesitated as he looked at Caleb. “For Lily’s sake, I’ll let you in this time. But you’re not to see Lily again. You’re a bad influence.”
Chapter 4
“No need. I can get in myself.”
Humiliated, Logan grabbed my wrist. “Don’t you dare push your luck! What’s with this fake coy act? You climbed into my bed just so you could marry me! Now that I’ve worn you out, you want to play the virtuous lady?”
I yanked my hand back and fixed him with a cold glare. “Logan, does slandering others make you that happy? I must have been blind to have ever fallen for you. But that doesn’t mean I’m still blind and foolish now.”
The whispers around us grew louder. Fingers pointed in my direction, as if I were the shameless mistress who had wrecked someone else’s relationship.
Seeing my son still standing protectively in front of me, and knowing my husband, Nick Shenton, had yet to arrive, I ended the confrontation.
Taking Caleb’s hand, I walked out. The restaurant was right on the riverside.
“Mom, I’m thirsty.”
I smoothed my emotions and tapped him gently on the forehead. “Then Mom will go buy you some water. Sit here and don’t move, alright? If anything happens, call me right away.”
I kept glancing back at him as I walked, only taking out my phone when it was time to pay.
Suddenly, a sharp scream split the air. I spun around. Joann was shoving my son with all her strength!
I bolted toward them. The moment she saw me, Joann gave a vicious push, sending my son tumbling into the river, then slipped and fell in herself.
Without thinking, I dove straight into the water after him.
“Help me, Logan! Bella is trying to kill me!” Joann cried.
Without hesitation, Logan jumped into the river and rescued Joann. He wrapped his arms around her soaking frame, his face full of distress, and when I reached the bank, he viciously kicked me back into the river.
“Joann has been nothing but kind to you, and you try to kill her? You’re downright vicious! Lily has become the way she is because of you. She’s nothing like me!”
His boot struck me again and again as I clung to my son, coughing and choking on water.
I glared up at him, my eyes burning. “He’s not Lily. He’s Nick Shenton’s son. If you don’t back off now, Nick will destroy you!”
Caleb clung to me, crying. “You’re a monster! Leave my mom alone! I’m not yours—go away!”
Logan sneered and ordered his men to drag us ashore.
“You think Nick Shenton would ever claim a cheap woman like you?” He sneered. “Fine. Let’s see how much he cares when he sees you like this.”
They hauled us into the kitchen, where the manager shoved us to the floor. “So you’re the one harassing Mrs. Rice on our property? And you have the nerve to call yourself Mrs. Shenton?
“Mr. Shenton worships his wife. You think gutter trash like you belongs in his bed?” He barked at the staff, “Beat her—make it hurt. Then dump her in Mr. Shenton’s private room. He’ll pay well for the entertainment.”
Joann’s eyes gleamed when she spotted the tank of live Australian lobsters. “Look how filthy they are. Wouldn’t want to offend Mr. Shenton’s eyes, would we? Toss them in—let the lobsters clean them up.”
The manager gagged Caleb and bound his wrists before hurling us into the tank. The enraged crustaceans struck instantly, their claws slicing into Caleb’s skin.
I held him tight, my eyes blazing as the massive pincers ripped our flesh until the water turned a faint shade of red.
Just as I was on the brink of blacking out from blood loss, the familiar growl of an engine echoed outside.
Nick stepped out of the car, casually dismissing Logan’s flattering text message before lifting his head with a faint grunt.
At that moment, my son bit through the gag and screamed, tears streaming down his face.
“Daddy! Save Mom!”
