I was feeding my seven-year-old daughter, Lucy Langer, when Robert Langer crashed through the front door, reeking of alcohol.

His shirt collar hung askew, and red marks blazed across his neck.

Audrey, he said hoarsely, someone spiked my drink at the charity gala. But don’t worry. I’ve already had my lawyer handle it.

I nodded. After so many years of marriage, I knew he only had eyes for me and our daughter. He never strayed.

Or so I believed… until eight months later.

While Robert was away on a business trip, his cruise ship caught fire. The news dominated every channel.

Clutching a sobbing Lucy, I rushed to the hospital, only to find him swathed in bandages, standing outside the maternity ward.

“Becca is pregnant,” he murmured. “It was that night at the gala… I didn’t think it would happen from just once…”

He gulped.

“When the fire spread, she saved me. But she… got trapped herself.”

A newborn’s wail pierced the corridor as the delivery room doors opened. Becca White was wheeled out, looking pale and exhausted.

She clutched my sleeve and pleaded desperately, “Audrey… my babies can’t grow up without a father…”
Chapter 1
Robert Langer turned to me. I could see the conflict in his eyes. “Lucy needs her mother… but Becca’s babies…”
I tightened my hold on my trembling daughter and cut him off with a cold laugh.
“Robert, either you make them disappear for good, or I’ll take Lucy and leave.”
His eyes burned red as he pinned me against the wall. “I can’t lose either of you!”
Then came the celebration for the twins’ birth.
The Langer family estate blazed with lights and celebration.
Lucy clung to the back of my skirt, peeking timidly at the newborn twins.
I slipped off my wedding ring and pressed it into her palm. “Sweetheart, we’re going to meet your new daddy.”
When I made the call, Andrew Thompson’s deep voice came through the line. “Audrey, I’m so happy you’ve finally decided to call.”
Inside the Langer family villa, the atmosphere brimmed with joy. Laughter and toasts echoed through the banquet hall.
“Congratulations, congratulations! The Langer family finally has heirs—twins, no less.”
Robert cradled the two infants, his face glowing as he handed out gifts to the guests.
Beside him, Becca leaned weakly against his shoulder, gracefully accepting the guests’ congratulations to “Mrs. Langer.”
I stood at the entrance holding Lucy’s hand.
She shrank behind me, her timid gaze fixed on the lively scene before us. Her simple clothes stood in stark contrast to the lavish surroundings.
Becca glanced up, her eyes glinting with smug satisfaction. “Robert, Audrey and Lucy are here.”
The banquet fell briefly silent as the guests turned to look in our direction.
Robert’s smile stiffened. He put down the baby boys in a cradle and strode toward me.
“Audrey, why didn’t you tell me you were coming? I could have sent someone to pick you and Lucy up…”
A mocking smile tugged at my lips.
Was he truly eager to see me, or just afraid I’d interrupt his perfect family?
Whispers rippled through the crowd.
“So that’s the legitimate wife who couldn’t give the Langer family a son for over eight years? I heard she was left with health complications after her first birth and can’t conceive again. If it weren’t for Robert protecting her, the family would have kicked her out long ago!
“And she even left home for three whole months, taking their only daughter with her, just because she didn’t want Becca and the twins living here. How childish.”
“Robert’s dad’s dying wish was to hold a grandson. Mark my words, Audrey will be replaced by Becca sooner or later…”
Becca’s eyes gleamed with triumph as she slowly approached, strolling the cradle of her twins.
“Audrey, from now on, Lucy will have two younger brothers. We should let them get to know each other. Lucy, why not come and check on your brothers?”
The moment Lucy stepped closer, Becca held a pair of scissors to hurt her sons’ hands—then pressed the scissors into Lucy’s palms.
She moved so fast that even I, and the rest of the crowd, barely noticed it.
With a startled cry, Lucy stumbled back. The twins began to wail, their sharp cries filling the air.
“Lucy!”
Robert, almost in anger, shoved her away.
She stumbled and fell, scraping her knee, and burst into tears.
“Robert, are you out of your mind?!”
I knelt to gather her into my arms, glaring up at him.
But he ignored me, cooing at the baby boys in the nanny’s arms.
Wiping at her eyes, Becca spoke in a tremulous voice. “Audrey, I know you dislike me, but you can’t teach Lucy to hurt the boys. If Robert hadn’t reacted in time just now, their eyes could have been poked out…”
Gasps and murmurs spread like wildfire.
“Such cruelty at her age?! What kind of mother raises a child like that?”
“The Langer family can’t possibly tolerate such a wild girl!”
I tightened my hold on my trembling daughter, my voice ringing with fury.
“Becca, how could you twist the truth in front of all these guests? Aren’t you afraid of retribution?”
She turned pleading eyes toward Robert. “Robert, Audrey still can’t accept me. Maybe I should just take the children and leave the Langer family…”
His face darkened, disappointment flickering in his gaze as he looked at me.
“Audrey, I’ve spoiled you and Lucy for too long. If you can’t discipline her as a mother, then I’ll do it as her father.”
Chapter 2
As soon as Robert said those words, two security guards stepped forward to seize Lucy.
I shielded Lucy with all my strength. “Robert, if you dare touch her, I’ll divorce you!”
He hesitated for a moment, but Becca suddenly spoke up, her voice quivering with urgency.
“Robert, the babies… Something’s wrong with their breathing! We need to get them to the hospital!”
His face drained of color. Shoving me aside, he bolted toward the babies in her arms.
I took the chance to pull Lucy behind me as I watched his retreating back with a chill creeping into my heart.
So this was how it was—in his eyes, the twins were worth far more than his own wife and daughter.
“I’m taking Becca and the children to the hospital first. And as for divorce, don’t even think about it. As long as you acknowledge Becca and the twins, you’ll remain the only Mrs. Langer. Audrey, my patience has limits. Don’t push me further.”
After they left, the banquet hall filled with a swell of murmurs.
“Tsk, tsk… the Langer family’s drama is better than any TV show. The legitimate wife can’t beat the mistress, and even her daughter has to suffer for it.”
“Exactly. Looks like Audrey is about to lose everything. Once a man has a new love and an heir, the old one is forgotten.”
Lucy glanced up at me, her young eyes tinged with worry.
“Mom… does Daddy not want us anymore? It’s my fault for making him angry. Please don’t fight with Daddy because of me. If you divorce, I won’t have a daddy…”
My throat tightened. I pulled her into my arms and murmured, “It’s alright, Lucy… you’ll have a new daddy someday.”
But in my mind, the past came rushing back unbidden.
Robert and I had dated for three years, then married for eight. He had always treated me like his queen.
After Lucy’s birth, I was left with complications that made me unable to conceive again. When his dad demanded we divorce, it was Robert who endured ninety-nine lashes of the Langer family’s punishment to keep our marriage.
That night of the charity gala, he swore to me, “It was all an accident. I’ve had my lawyer handle it.”
But a month later, when he returned from a business trip, one button was missing from his shirt. He claimed it had been torn off during a meeting.
Soon after, I found a sonogram in his phone, dated exactly one month after the charity gala.
When I confronted him, his gaze darted away. “It’s a business partner’s child. I was just holding on to it for them.”
From then on, his business trips became frequent. He even missed our daughter’s birthday.
Until that one trip, when he just happened to be on the same ill-fated cruise as Becca.
“Mom, my knee hurts…”
Her tearful voice yanked me back to the present.
I looked at the beads of blood welling on her scraped skin, then remembered the fury in Robert’s eyes when he shoved her.
Suddenly, the eight years of our marriage felt like a surreal, absurd dream.
He had already broken every vow he once made.
During the three months I left home with Lucy after our fight about Becca, he never once sent anyone to look for us.
Cradling my daughter, I pulled out my phone and sent him the divorce papers I’d prepared long ago.
[Sign it. Other than Lucy, I want nothing.]
Then, I dialed a number I had long kept blocked.
A deep, steady voice answered, “Audrey, I’m so happy you’ve finally decided to call.”
Chapter 3
“Wait for me. I’m returning to the country.”
I ended the call, then scooped Lucy into my arms and headed for the exit of the banquet hall.
“Apologies, Madam. Mr. Langer instructed that you’re not allowed to take Miss Lucy away,” the security guard said, blocking my path.
I forced myself to stay upright as I unlocked my phone, only to be met with a fresh social media post from Becca.
It was a photo of Robert.
[Thanks to Robert for rushing me and the children to the hospital in time. He’s a great dad and husband!]
Pain lanced through my chest, sharp enough to steal my breath. I could almost taste blood rising in my throat.
“Mom! What’s wrong?” Lucy’s frightened eyes darted to the corner of my mouth.
“She’s vomiting blood! Hurry! Get her to the hospital!” someone shouted.
Chaos erupted as people scrambled to carry me out. I drifted into unconsciousness and didn’t wake for three whole days.
When I finally opened my eyes, Lucy was nowhere in sight.
“Lucy!”
“A man claiming to be the little girl’s father came just now,” the nurse explained. “He took her away.”
I froze, a chill settling in my gut. Something was wrong… terribly wrong.
It took three calls before Robert finally answered.
“Robert! What have you done with Lucy? What are you trying to do?”
He gave a cold laugh. “What am I trying to do? You should be asking yourself that. You taught Lucy to harm Becca’s babies. Do you take me for a blind man?”
“Nonsense! Lucy would never do such a thing! This is all Becca’s scheme!”
I struggled to get out of bed, the IV tugging painfully at my arm.
“A scheme?” His voice was frigid. “The surveillance footage clearly shows Lucy holding a pair of scissors, approaching the crib, saying she was avenging you. Audrey, what a fine daughter you’ve raised.”
The words hit like a plunge into an ice pit. No… impossible. Lucy had begged me not to blame him just days ago…
A crash sounded on the other end, followed by my daughter’s tearful voice.
“Daddy, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt Adam and Sammy…”
My hand trembled around the phone, tears spilling unchecked.
“Lucy—! Robert, don’t touch her! She’s only seven years old. If you need to vent your anger, take it out on me! I’m begging you…”
But he cut me off without hesitation.
“From today onward, I’ll be in charge of Lucy’s upbringing. If you dare interfere again, don’t blame me for disregarding whatever remains of our marriage.”
The call ended.
Ignoring the nurse’s protests, I yanked the IV from my arm and staggered toward the door.
No matter what it took, I would get my daughter back!
Chapter 4
The moment I stumbled outside, a wall of flashing cameras engulfed me.
Reporters surged forward, shoving microphones in my face.
“Audrey, is it true you instructed your daughter to harm the twins because you were jealous that Becca gave birth to sons?”
“Sources say you’re unable to conceive again, and that you wanted to eliminate the Langer family’s bloodline. Care to comment?”
“Mr. Langer has already issued a statement saying he will hold you accountable. Do you have anything to say in your defense?”
The crush of bodies pressed in on me until I could barely stand.
My phone buzzed incessantly with headlines flooding the screen one after another.
[Robert Langer’s Wife Intends to Kill His Illegitimate Sons]
[Audrey Flavell Driven Mad By Jealousy]
In the photos, the doctored surveillance footage showed a chilling image—Lucy holding a pair of scissors.
The comment section seethed with venom: “Vicious woman,” “Unfit to be a mother.”
Only a few scattered voices spoke in my defense.
“The husband cheated and brought the mistress and kids home. Who could endure that?”
But they were quickly drowned out by the tide of insults.
Suddenly, a black van pulled up at the edge of the crowd.
Robert stepped out, cradling the twins. Becca followed close behind, her gaze lingering on my disheveled state. There was a flicker of triumph in her eyes.
“Audrey,” Robert’s voice was ice, his stare stripped of any hesitation, “kneel and apologize to Becca. Admit you incited Lucy to attack the twins, and that you hired people online to smear my relationship with her.”
“I did not!” My voice cracked into a hoarse scream, my nails biting into my palms. “Robert, you know this is a setup—”
“Mom!”
Lucy darted out from behind the nanny, but Becca caught her in an iron grip.
She twisted Lucy’s arm hard. Lucy’s face went paper-white from the pain, tears trembling at the edge of her lashes, but she didn’t dare cry out.
A cold numbness swept through me as I looked into Robert’s indifferent eyes.
In that moment, I finally understood—he didn’t care about the truth at all.
My knees trembled as I sank slowly to the ground. My palm cracked across my own cheek.
“I’m sorry! It was me. I told Lucy to do it. I was jealous of Becca!”
With every word and every slap, another piece of my heart tore away.
Again and again, my hand struck my face until it swelled painfully. The coppery tang of blood spread in my mouth.
Robert watched coldly as the twins in his arms giggled, as if they were mocking me.
“Not enough,” he said suddenly.
“Audrey, didn’t you want a divorce? When you couldn’t have another child, I took ninety-nine lashes from the Langer family’s punishment just to stay with you.
“Now, if you can kneel and crawl ninety-nine steps, bowing your head at each one to beg my sons for forgiveness, then I’ll give you that divorce.”
