Content:

It was supposed to be our graduation trip. My childhood friend, Peter, was taking me

But his girl buddy insisted on eating snake egg she found in the mountains.

Wild snake eggs are a powerful tonic. What’s wrong with me wanting to give my chest a little boost?

I knew it was a bad idea. That night, I stole the egg, planning to return it to where she found it.

Suddenly my vision blurred, rows of comments appeared before my eyes

[That egg is actually the villain’s younger brother! The female lead ate the villain’s brother but framed the supporting female character. The villain nearly strangled her to death.]

[That king cobra has already cultivated into a great demon. The supporting female character is afraid of snakes and used the female lead as a shield against the snake, only to be thrown into the mountains by the male lead.]

[Exactly! Clearly, the childhood friend and the female lead were traveling together, but the supporting female character had to tag along. Though, the extreme push-and-pull is the most ambiguous. The female lead said her chest hurts, and the male lead is massaging it for her!]

Terrified by these comments, I started packing my suitcase overnight, ready to flee.

But as I zipped my bag, I heard a soft crack from the stolen egg.

It split open!

A tiny snake, with a piece of eggshell still perched on its head, looked up at me.

And then, I heard it, clear as day in my mind, “Mommy!”

It all started senior year. Peter said he wanted to take me on a road trip to celebrate graduation.

He’d had his driver’s license since sophomore year.

I planned for two weeks. Originally, we agreed to go to the beach, but a week before we left, Peter suddenly texted to change the destination to the mountains.

“The mountains will be cooler, and we can even go stream trekking, have water fights.”

“Joan, if you want to go to the beach, I’ll take you after we get back, okay?”

Since he promised to go to the beach with me later, I decided to accompany him to the mountains first.

On the day of departure, I walked up to his car and saw a long-haired girl already in the passenger seat.

“Surprise!” she said, grinning. “Didn’t expect us, did you? We’re coming too!”

“You must be Joan, right? I’m Gwen. Peter’s told me all about you. You really do look so… sweet.”

She rolled down the window, gesturing for me to put my luggage in the trunk.

Three boys were crammed in the back seat, all smiling at me.

Peter gave me an apologetic look.

“Gwen’s from the mountains originally. She said she could be our guide.”

“Joan, you don’t mind us crashing your and Peter’s trip, do you?”

“It’s not good for just the two of you, a guy and a girl alone together… He shouldn’t get you too easily, or he won’t cherish you.”

She punched Peter’s shoulder playfully,

“I’m telling you, us girls aren’t that easy to win over.”

Peter raised his hands in surrender,

“I wasn’t trying to…”

His face flushed red, turning back to me.

“Joan, don’t listen to her. I…”

I just nodded,

“I see.”

Peter had confessed to me right before college applications.

We’d known each other since elementary school.

Our relationship was always speacial.

When playing house, he often fought to be my “husband”.

We drifted apart a bit in junior high when he tested into Lincoln High, while I went to Washington High, and his family moved to a different neighborhood.

That’s how our families separated.

But Peter and I never lost touch.

We’d still encouraged each other and shared interesting stories from school.

In sophomore year, he started talking about a new girl, Gwen, a transfer student

Her name came up more and more often in his conversations.

I’d asked him tentatively if he liked Gwen.

He paused for a moment, then said carelessly,

“Joan, you should know who I like, right?”

“When you meet Gwen, you’ll understand. She’s basically just one of the guys.”

Now I’d met her.

Peter was wrong—Gwen is even more of a girl than I’d ever be.

She wore a revealing tank top, with sunglasses hanging on the neckline, accentuating every curve, She seemed utterl unconcerned about how much she revealed with every movement.

“I wanted to tell you earlier, but Gwen said it’d be a surprise.”

Peter sounded helpless.

He asked Gwen to move to the back.

“Well, I’d like to sit in the back too, but I get carsick something awful, ”

“Joan, you don’t mind me sitting up front, do you?”

“These mountain roads are long. I can help keep Peter awake while he drives.”

She turned to the three boys in the back and shouted,

“You guys better take good care of your ‘sister-in-law,’ you hear me?”

The three boys chorused back,

“Don’t worry, we’ll definitely protect Peter’s crush.”

I took a step back with my luggage,

“The car is too crowded. Maybe I shouldn’t go.”

Gwen pouted,

“But we’ve already booked the mountain lodge. Wouldn’t it be a buzzkill if you backed out now?”

“You all can still go.” I said.

Peter turned off the engine and got out to talk to me.

“Joan, I’m sorry.”

“I didn’t think this through.”

He called a driver to bring another car.

Half an hour later, a second car arrived.

Gwen refused to move, saying she was too tired from all the excitement.

The three boys in the back played rock-paper-scissors to decide which two would move to the othwe car.

On the drive, Gwen blasted hip-hop music.

She swayed to the rhythm, occasionally bumping into Peter’s shoulder.

“Remember this one? We danced to this at last year’s homecoming!”

“I was the one who taught you the steps.”

Peter smiled and nodded.

“By the way, Joan, you’ve never seen Peter dance, have you?”

“He was like a robot. If I hadn’t spent time practicing with him, he would’ve made a fool of himself.”

Last year’s homecoming…

I remember I had bad food poisoning and was in the hospital, vomiting and having diarrhea.

Peter had said he was too busy to visit.

So he was busy practicing dancing with Gwen?

“I haven’t seen it.”

I said flatly.

Peter, perhaps thinking I was tired and asked Gwen to turn down the music.

“How could anyone be sleepy on such a fun trip?”

Gwen pouted but reluctantly lowered the volume.

I felt a knot of irritation tighten in my stomach.

I was neither here nor there, even starting to regret accepting Peter’s confession.

Fortunately, the mountain scenery was indeed beautiful.

The mountain lodge Peter booked was cozy, nestled at the foot of the mountain.

As soon as we arrived, Gwen started clamoring to go into the woods to look for rabbits.

But it was almost dark, and the lodge owner owner advised us to wait until tomorrow.

Gwen grabbed her camera, dismissive.

“If you won’t go, I’ll go by myself.”

“I grew up in places like this. I know my way around.”

“You’re all such scaredy-cats!”

“Peter, you stay here with your princess. I’ll bring back some wild mountain treats for you.”

Peter grabbed her arm.

“Your hometown isn’t this mountain range. Don’t be reckless. The owner said there are dangerous things out there.”

The other three boys also tried to persuade her.

Gwen widened her eyes and laughed exaggeratedly.

“Hey, come on!”

“You believe those old stories?”

“Joan, your Peter is such a worrywart. Maybe I should I introduce you to someone braver?”

Peter was amused.

“Don’t you dare corrupt Joan. Fine, we’ll all go with you.”

In the end, they all decided to accompany Gwen into the woods to look for rabbits.

I stayed behind to unpack.

Around ten at night, I went to ask the owner for a phone charger, having forgotten mine.

Luckily, the owner had one.

Suddenly, there was a commotion at the entrance.

I looked up just in time to see Peter carrying Gwen on his back at the front.

Her arms were wrapped tightly around his neck, her body pressed against him.

There were a few scratches on her arms, but she looked incredibly happy.

“Next time you run off like that, I’ll let the wolves take you!”Peter scolded, but there was no real anger in his voice.

“But they didn’t get a chance before you caught me, did they?”

Gwen swung her legs gently, bumping her forehead lightly against the back of his head.

The other three boys followed behind, teasing them.

“Peter, saving the damsel in distress!”

“Yeah, Gwen, why not consider marry him to pay him back? Joan can be the wife, and you can be the mistress!”

“Get lost!”

Gwen shook her fist, laughing.

“Why should I be the mistress?”

The scene was loud and full of inside jokes.

When Peter saw me, he froze and instinctively setting Gwen down.

But as soon as her feet touched the ground, Gwen stumbled and fell against him.

“Oops! Peter, can’t you hold me steady?” she complained playfully.

I just nodded at him and turned to go back to my room.

Peter caught up to me in the hallway.

“Joan, you’re still up?”

“Don’t misunderstand. Gwen fell into a pit. It’s a good thing we went with her, or it could’ve been dangerous.”

“She scraped her leg on a branch, so I…”

Before I could respond, Gwen hopped on one foot, staring straight at Peter.

“Wow, ditching your friends for your girl. Fine, fine, go find your girl. My injury isn’t a big deal anyway.”

“Kevin, come help me to my room.”

She pulled one of the boys, Kevin, toward her.

“Hey, Peter, since you’ve done the good deed, why not finish it and take Gwen to her room?”

“Yeah, she’s such a baby about pain. She only lets you near her when she needs medicine patched up.”

“We’re all buddies here. You can’t abandon your friends for a girl.”

I pulled my wrist gently from Peter’s grasp and managed a smile.

“Go ahead. I don’t mind.”

Any doubt I had on the road was gone now, now I was completely sure I’d made a mistake.

The wound on Gwen’s leg would heal if she didn’t get it treated soon.

Peter looked at me, searching my face, “Really, you don’t mind?”

“Nope.”

Gwen called out from behind me, her voice bright

“Joan is so understanding!”

“Peter, escort me back to my palace!”

Peter laughed and scolded her.

“Cut it out. I’m not your servant.”

They all accompanied Gwen to her room their laughter fading down the hall.

I stood there for a moment, listening. I didn’t hear them come out.

The next morning, I arranged for a driver to take me back.

But it was pouring rain, making the mountain roads treacherous.

The driver said the earliest we could leave was noon the next day, once the rain stopped.

Lunch was a mushroom hot pot.

Gwen mysteriously pulled a white egg from her pocket.

“Look what I found!”

“A wild chicken egg?”

One of the boys asked, leaning in for a closer look.

“No, it looks more like a bird egg.”

Another disagreed.

Gwen scoffed.

“You guys know nothing. This is obviously a snake egg. I found it in the pit yesterday.”

My heart sank, remembering something I’d raed online.

You’re not supposed to mess with snake eggs casually, or the mother snake might hold a grudge and might even track the scent for revenge.

I put down my chopsticks and spoke up.

“Gwen, you should put that back. I heard snakes can be very vengeful.”

She rolled her eyes.

“You believe everything you read on the internet?”

“Besides, snake eggs are a great tonic. What’s wrong with me wanting a little… extra boost?”

The boys burst out laughing.

“Gwen, if you don’t put that back and we get into trouble, it’s on you!”

I stubbornly insisted the egg should be returned, and the atmosphere turned tense.

Peter tried to mediate.

“She found it in the mountains. It might not even be fertile. Let her crack it open. If it’s bad, she’ll throw it away.”

Just then, the lodge owner came in with more dishes. He saw the egg in Gwen’s hand and he is face turned pale.

“Miss, you cannot keep that egg! You must put it back!”

His tone was deadly serious.

“The snakes in these mountains… they have a spirit. They’ll come looking for you!”

Gwen pouted and reluctantly stuffed the egg back into her pocket.

“Fine, fine. Superstitious nonsense.”

After lunch, the rain lightened to a drizzle.

Gwen enthusiastically suggested going creek trekking.

I clutched my stomach and frowned.

“I’m not feeling well. You guys go ahead without me.”

Peter looked concerned.

“Do you want me to stay with you?”

Gwen grabbed his arm.

“Oh, come on. She’s not a kid. If her stomach hurts, she should rest. Let’s go!”

She pushed Peter and the others out, turning back to wink at me.

“Joan, rest well~”

The moment they were gone, I slipped into Gwen’s room.

Her jacket was tossed carelessly on the bed. I reached into the pocket and, sure enough, found the egg.

I reached into the pocket and sure enough, found the egg.

When I was little, my grandma told me stories about mountains snakes being especially vengeful and not to be provoked.

When I was ten, I saw a snake bite a rabid dog that had been about to attack me.

Later, I came down with a high fever afterwards forgot a lot of things, and developed a deep-seated fear of snakes.

Clutching the egg, my heart pounding, I was about to take it back to the mountains when suddenly my vision blurred.

I froze, a cold sweat breaking out down my back.

What is this?

They said I was just a supporting character.

Peter and Gwen were the main leads.

They clearly had feelings for each other but were too proud to confess, both waiting for the other to make the first move.

Peter was just using me as a catalyst for their relationship.

This snake egg would ultimately end up in Gwen’s stomach, and I would become the target of the snake demon’s revenge.

When the snake demon came, I’ve pushed Gwen forward in terror.

In the end, Peter would throw me into the mountains to be devoured by wild animals.

I stared at the snake egg, my mind reeling.

I’m doomed! I’m doomed! I’m doomed!

Demons are real?!

It seemed too late to return it now.

I rushed back to my room, dragged out my suitcase, and offered the driver more money.

Double, triple, five times, I finally offered ten times the original price.

The driver finally agreed.

While I waited, those strange comments flashed in my mind again,

[The supporting character wants to leave? How can she? The driver will get into a car accident on the way and tell her he can’t make it.]

[Why does she want to leave? Doesn’t she like Peter? She almost cried when she saw him carrying Gwen back.]

[Oh, and Gwen’s clothes were wet, her figure clearly visible. Peter hurriedly hugged her to cover her up.]

I can’t leave?

The plot won’t let me?

My heart sank, and I collapsed onto the bed.

My phone rang.

It was the driver. He said the mountain road was blocked by a fallen tree, and his car had crashed into it. He couldn’t make it today.

Crack.

A faint sound made me jump.

I turned my head stiffly towards the snake egg I’d left on the bedside table.

A fine crack appeared on the shell.

With a series of soft cracking sounds, the fissure spread until the egg split open completely.

A tiny white snake, with a piece of eggshell still perched on its head, slowly poked out.

Its golden vertical pupils blinked innocently.

“Mommy!”

The little snake wriggled happily, its voice a soft, childish squeak.

Me???

Comments,

[Huh? The snake egg hatched?]

[And it’s calling the supporting character Mommy? It has the wrong mom!]

[The villain’s brother is kinda cute. But since it’s hatched, the female lead can’t eat it anymore.]

[Hey, snake soup is also a great tonic!]

“Who’s your mommy!”

I yelped, scrambling onto the windowsill and wrapping myself in the curtains.

“I’m not your mommy!”

The little snake tilted its head, the eggshell on its head wobbling.

“Mommy? Don’t you want Shorty?”

It stuck out its tongue pitifully, its eyes seeming to well up with tears.

Shorty?!

Well, it is pretty short, but still!

It even gave itself a name?!

Is that even reasonable?

I cracked the door open, peeking out with one eye. I was on the verge of a breakdown

“Listen, little one, I’m not your mommy. I’m just… an innocent bystander.”

“Look, you’re a snake, and I’m a human. We don’t even look alike.”

Shorty tilted its head, its eyes filled with confusion.

“How about this… I’ll open the door for you. Can you go find your mommy on your own?”

But it just slithered towards me happily.

“But Mommy, when I grow up, I can shapeshift! I’ll look just like you that!”

“You are my mommy. Only mommies can hatch eggs.”

Shorty started climbing up my leg. The cold, slippery sensation made my hair stand on end.

“Wait!”

I froze, not daring to movean inch .

“Get down first—”

Before I could finish, it had already reached my shoulder and was nuzzling my cheek affectionately.

“Mommy smells nice~”

Oh, god!

My eyes rolled back, and I passed out cold right there on the floor.

When II came to, those sarcastic comments floated before my eyes again,

[Hahaha! She fainted! Just collapsed!]

[OMG! She fell right on top of the little snake and knocked it out too!]

[LMAO, the villain’s brother almost died on its hatching day!]

I…

I turned my head and saw Shorty lying on its back, looking dazed and limp beside me.

“Wake up! Wake up!”

I scrambled away and cautiously poked it with my slipper.

The little snake jolted awake, tears welling in its big golden eyes as it tried to leap into my arms.

“Mommy, don’t die!”

Stay away!

Or I’ll die for real this time!

I finally managed to coax Shorty to stay at least a meter away from me.

But the little thing started sobbing and hiccupping pitifully.

“Wah… hic… Does Mommy… hic… think Shorty is ugly…”

“So… hic… that’s why you don’t like… Shorty?”

Seeing its utterly pitiful state, I lied through my teeth.

“How could that be? You’ll be very beautiful when you grow up.”

“It’s just… maybe you’re just in an awkward phase right now.”

Shorty’s tears stopped instantly.

“Really?”

“Really, really!”

Just then, a sharp knock rattled on the door.

“Joan! Are you in there?”

It was Gwen.

I jumped in fright, quickly nudging Shorty under the bed with my foot.

“Get under there! And don’t make a sound!”

Shorty whispered, “Mommy, I bumped my head. It hurts.”

Me, “Shh!”

Once I was sure it was hidden, I went to open the door.

Gwen stood outside, peering suspiciously into the room.

“Have you seen my snake egg?”

“Nope.”

I stood firm, blocking the doorway.

“But you were the only one here! If you didn’t take it, who did?”

Peter stood behind her, frowning at me.

“Joan, if you have it, just give it back. Gwen isn’t very strong. That egg is a good tonic for her.”

“I really didn’t take it! One tiny egg isn’t even enough to fill a cavity. Is it really worth eating?”

“Aren’t you afraid the mother snake will come looking for revenge?”

Gwen scoffed dismissively.

“Perfect. If it shows up, we can have snake meat barbecue tonight.”

“I was in my own room the whole time. I never went into hers.”

Peter’s frown deepened, and he reached out to move me aside.

“Joan, don’t be difficult. Why not just let her take a quick look inside?”

I sneered and shook off his hand.

“So now you’re helping another woman search your girlfriend’s room?”

His expression froze.

“That’s not what this is. Gwen is just stubborn. Letting her take a look. It’s not a big deal.”

“Then we’re breaking up.”

I said it calmly.

Comments flashed before my eyes,

[The supporting character is playing hard to get again. She’s obviously deeply in love but is putting the male lead in a difficult position on purpose.]

[But the male lead actually loves the female lead. This little trick is just to make the female lead jealous.]

[The supporting character is shameless too. She clearly stole the snake egg but won’t admit it!]

[Just wait until it gets dark, the real villain is about to make an entrance!]

Peter’s pupils constricted, and he said urgently,

“What did you say? You’re breaking up over something this trivial?”

“Trivial? Fine, let me ask you this, you stayed in her room all night last night. Is that trivial enough?”

His face instantly changed color.

“Joan, let me explain. Gwen hurt her leg last night. I was just helping her apply medicine. The others were there too!”

Comments,

[Applying medicine is true, but later, Gwen said her leg hurt, and Peter massaged her calf for half an hour.]

[The others were drunk and passed out. They weren’t interrupting anything.]

[The best part is that Gwen fell asleep on Peter’s lap. Tsk tsk, when she woke up, Peter’s hand was somehow on her chest.]

I felt a tightness in my chest but forced a look of sudden understanding.

“Oh~ I see.”

Peter relaxed, thinking I believed him.

“But I don’t believe you!”

“If you dare try to step into my room, I’ll call the police.”

I opened the door and said to Gwen, who was trying to push past me.

She glared at me with pure hatred, then turned to Peter with a wronged expression.

“Hah! Peter, your girlfriend is something else. No wonder she has you wrapped around her finger.”

“From now on, Maybe you should just stop hanging out with us anymore. Who knows, I might accidentally the other woman?”

With that, she turned and stormed left.

Peter stood there, his face dark.

“Joan, nothing happened. I don’t agree to the breakup. You need to calm down.”

He glanced at me, hesitanted, then turned to chase after her.

“Gwen! Wait up!”

I quickly slammed the door shut and locked it.

“Mommy, I don’t like that woman. When she found me, she shook me so hard I almost scrambled.”

Shorty mumbled, crawling out from under the bed, a new bump visible on its head.

Trembling, I found a plastic basin in the room and lined it with a soft towel.

“Shorty, can you stay here for now?”

Shorty was surprisingly obedient.

It slithered right into the basin with a whoosh , coiling itself up neatly.

I carefully covered it with a jacket.

A muffled, tiny voice came from inside.

“Is Mommy tucking Shorty in?”

“Then Shorty will go to sleep now.”

“Mommy smells the best…”

That evening, when I went to the main lodge to get some food, I heard Gwen’s theatrical whining before I even entered.

“I don’t care! Peter, you need to give me an explanation!”

“Are you choose your buddies or your precious girlfriend?”

Peter and the other three boys were gathered around Gwen, handing her tissues and refilling her drink.

I glanced their way and pretended not to see them.

Gwen deliberately raised her voice.

“Some people just can’t stand others being happy!”

“They have a dirty mind, so they see everything as dirty.”

“Owner, could I get a tray? I’d like to take my food back to my room.”

The owner nodded understandingly and handed me a tray. Just then, Peter walked over.

“Joan, go apologize to Gwen. Let’s just forget about this.”

I smirked coldly.

“Why should I?”
