Our biological daughter Lily was brought back to the family.
Isabella, our adopted daughter, secretly ordered my husband Alexander’s men to break Lily’s legs and throw her into a wolf cage.
In front of Alexander, Isabella claimed Lily had pushed her, making her ankle twist.
Besides, Isabella showed Alexander a video, where Lily and I were “putting on a show” in the cage according to her.
Ten steel nails were driven into Lily’s legs.
Wolves drooled onto Lily’s face.
Stroking Isabella’s hair, Alexander reacted impassively to Lily’s suffer.
“Fine, Evelyn. Go on with the show.”
“Never think I will pity and forgive you because of the act!”
A blood-stained pair of pliers had been put in the cage.
“Go pulling the nails out and crawl out of the cage. Then apologize to Isabella!” Alexander ordered.
My hands shook as I tightened my grip on the pliers, aiming at the first nail in Lily’s leg.
Alexander’s phone call came through, exploding with impatience,
“Evelyn, enough with the drama.”
“Just pull out the nails and bring Lily back. Don’t push your luck.”
“I’m warning you — if you dare trouble Isabella again, next time I will put on the ‘show’ for you myself!”
I looked at the ten bloody holes in Lily’s legs and laughed out loud.
The wolves growled and closed in. The iron cage rattled violently from their impact. Lily’s cries were heart-wrenching.
On the remote monitor, Isabella cooed at the camera,
“Daddy, Mommy still refuses to apologize, sticking to her performance. Poor Lily.”
Her innocent face was full of smug delight.
I shielded Lily with my body and roared into the empty air,
“Alexander, you monster! Open your damn eyes! Does this look like an act to you?!”
No one answered.
Only the heavy panting of the wolves drew nearer.
With a sickening squelch, the first nail was pulled out.
Lily’s voice gave out. Gushing blood stained my vision red.
The warm blood was screaming all of this was real.
Lily weakly grabbed my hand.
“Mommy… it hurts so much… Isabella… she told them… to hammer hard…”
My heart stopped.
Isabella told them to hammer hard?
Alexander’s men stood nearby “supervising”, turning a blind eye to Lily’s suffering, just urging me to “finish the act.”
I stared at their faces — all those expressionless masks.
I realized in despair that besides pulling out those nails, there was no way we would get out the cage.
Gritting my teeth, I pulled out the second nail.
Lily’s scream almost pierced my eardrums.
Hatred surged like a tidal wave in my eyes.
Alexander called again.
“Evelyn, that’s enough! Stop this nonsense right now!”
I looked at Lily’s paper-white face, at the eight nails still embedded in her legs.
“Nonsense?” My voice was low, “Fine. I’ll play along .”
Third nail.
Lily was in too much pain to speak, just gripping my hand tightly.
Her hand was so small, so cold.
Fourth nail.
Fifth nail.
With each nail I pulled, my heart broke a little more.
From the monitor, Isabella’s voice came through,
“Daddy, Mommy seems really crazy. Poor Lily is losing so much blood.”
There wasn’t a trace of worry in her tone.
Instead, it was filled with excitement, like she was watching a show.
I lifted my head and spoke to the surveillance camera.
“Isabella, listen carefully.”
“I will settle this score with you.”
Isabella laughed even more gleefully through the monitor.
“Mommy, are you threatening me? Daddy, did you hear that? Mommy is threatening me again!”
Alexander’s voice came through the phone,
“Evelyn! If you dare lay a finger on Isabella, I’ll make you regret it for the rest of your life!”
I already regretted it.
I regretted marrying him, letting my innocent child suffer like this.
The sixth nail came out.
Lily had already passed out.
I gently patted her cheek. She slowly opened her eyes and looked at me weakly.
“Mommy… I’m in pain…”
“I know, sweetheart. It’ll be over soon.”
My tears fell onto her face.
Seventh nail.
Eighth nail.
The wolves had reached the edge of the cage. Their claws reached in, almost scratching Lily’s feet.
I used my body to block them, feeling the sharp pain of claws scraping my back.
Ninth nail.
Only one left.
Lily had lost too much blood. Her face was as pale as snow.
My hands shook as I gripped the pliers, aiming at the final nail.
This one was driven in the deepest, almost piercing straight through her calf.
With a squelch, the last nail was pulled out.
Lily completely lost consciousness.
I picked her up and stumbled toward the cage door.
It was locked.
Lily was bleeding more and more. Her little face was white as paper.
I desperately beat against the iron bars, my voice gone hoarse.
“Help! Is anyone there? Save my daughter!”
But only the low growls of beasts answered me.
My phone vibrated. Alexander’s voice came through, cold as a knife,
“Evelyn, haven’t you had enough? My men say you’re too into the role. Still not wrapping this up?”
I screamed myself hoarse,
“Alexander! Lily is really dying! Come save her, now!”
“Don’t test my limits! Stop your ridiculous performance immediately, or you’ll face the consequences!”
The call ended.
The bodyguards outside were chatting. Their voices carried clearly,
“Madam’s acting is really something. Crying so realistically.”
“Yeah, the prop nails look pretty convincing too.”
I shook the cage like a madwoman. Lily’s blood dripped onto my face, warm and stinging.
My phone rang again. It was a video from Isabella.
In the clip, she and Alexander were sitting in a fancy restaurant.
Candlelight flickered as she giggled and fed him cake.

My phone kept ringing.
My younger brother from my maiden family called in a panic,
“Evelyn, the company is being audited by the IRS. The bank is calling back our loans too. What’s going on?”
Alexander’s doing.
He was forcing me to admit this was all an act, forcing me to apologize to Isabella.
I held Lily close. Her breathing grew weaker.
“Mommy… it hurts…”
“It’s okay, sweetie. Mommy’s here.”
Night fell. The bodyguards’ mocking voices continued.
“Madam’s acting could win an Oscar.”
“Yeah, still crying like it’s real.”
I closed my eyes, letting go of any last hope of getting help from others.
I could only rely on myself.
I took out a hairpin and started picking the lock.
My nails broke. Blood blurred my vision. I kept picking.
Lily’s hand grew colder. She trembled in my arms.
“Mommy, am I going to die?”
“No, darling. Mommy will definitely save you.”
I didn’t know how long I picked, but finally, the lock loosened.
Just then, the iron door suddenly swung open.
Alexander stood there with Isabella. He glanced at Lily lying in a pool of blood, his brow furrowed.
Isabella dramatically covered her mouth,
“Oh my god! How did Lily get so hurt? Mommy, even if you want attention from Daddy, you can’t do this to Lily!”
She turned to Alexander, her eyes welling with tears,
“Daddy, look! To get back at me, Mommy didn’t even spare Lily!”
Alexander’s face turned dark. He pointed at me and roared,
“Evelyn! You actually hurt her! Are you insane?!”
I held Lily, who was barely breathing, tears streaming down,
“Alexander! Look carefully! Your precious Isabella ordered these nails hammered in!”
“What? Dare you speak it again!” Alexander glared at me. “Stop talking nonsense! And stop pretending!”
“Take Lily to the hospital now. Those nails can’t be real. Let’s see what kind of show you can put on!”
He still didn’t believe me. Or maybe he’d rather not believe.
Isabella pretended to mediate,
“Daddy, don’t be angry. Mommy might have been too upset and did something stupid.”
My daughter was dying, and they were still putting on a act.
This was the man I loved for over a decade. This was the girl I treated like my own daughter.
I stopped talking, just holding Lily tightly.
Lily was rushed to the hospital. Alexander followed closely.
His face was stern and cold as he barked at the doctors,
“Examine her thoroughly. Leave nothing out.”
Watching him like that, despair washed over me.
He still doubted me.
Even with our daughter bloody and broken on the stretcher, he still thought this was a show I directed.
Half an hour later, the doctor came out of the examination room, his expression grim.
“Mr Pierce, the patient’s injuries are extremely severe.”
The doctor’s voice trembled slightly.
“The steel nails penetrated deep into the bone, causing severe fractures and muscle tears. Blood loss has reached critical levels. If she had been brought in an hour later, I’m afraid…”
The doctor didn’t finish, but my heart relaxed slightly, thinking Alexander would finally believe me.
But after hearing the diagnosis, though his body jolted, his cold expression quickly returned.
“Impossible… I clearly instructed…” He muttered something to himself.
Isabella quickly jumped in, her eyes panicked as she tried to explain:
“Doctor, are you sure you didn’t mix something up? Lily just fell accidentally and bumped into some props!”
Her voice trembled, her eyes darting around, not daring to look anyone in the eye.
Alexander’s gaze shifted between the doctor, me, and Isabella, his face full of confusion and anger.
The next second, he slammed the table.
“You’re all in on this together?!” He pointed at the doctor and roared,
“Evelyn, you’re really something! Even the hospital is in your pocket!”
I was completely stunned.
The doctor’s diagnosis was so clear. Lily’s injuries were so severe. And he still doubted me?
“You think I’d believe you like this?”
Alexander’s eyes were full of contempt. “Don’t even think about it!”
It felt like my chest was being torn apart.
Trembling all over, I pointed at Lily unconscious in the hospital room:
“Alexander! Look at her! She’s your daughter!”
Tears streamed down uncontrollably.
“You actually said I bribed the hospital? Is your heart made of stone?!”
Alexander snorted coldly, completely ignoring my tears and accusations.
He was about to order his men to investigate the hospital when hurried footsteps came from outside.
The Pierce family’s old butler rushed in, looking panicked.
In his hands was a tray holding several steel nails stained with dried blood.
The nails were bent and deformed, alongside some torn, bloodstained fabric scraps.
“Mr Pierce!” The butler’s voice trembled, on the verge of tears. “It’s terrible! Those nails… they’re all real!”
