The heart that I had waited two years for was given to the fake heiress, Diane Bishop, by my husband.
The doctor said that I only had a week left to live. So, I decided to undergo cryonics.
I donated my body to Diane’s workshop.
The day I signed the donation papers, my son threw himself into my arms and exclaimed that I had finally made up with Diane.
My parents praised me for finally being a good sister to help out Diane.
My husband was pleased when he said that I had finally let go of the grudge and had become more understanding.
I chuckled. They were right, I had finally learned my lesson.
I would give Diane my identity as the heir of Bishop Corporation and fulfill everyone’s wishes.
Chapter 1
“You don’t have much time left. You should spend this time and say goodbye to your family,” the attending physician said in a gentle and sympathetic tone. My heart dropped after hearing his words.
I had already guessed the outcome, but when the final verdict came, I still could not stop my tears.
I was only twenty-eight years old. I had always tried my best to survive.
However, I had not expected my husband to take away the heart I had waited two years for.
He used that for Diane Bishop’s heart transplant, even though that fraud’s condition was not very serious.
I walked in a daze as I reached Diane’s ward. I saw my parents, my husband, Fred Anderson, and my son, Sammy Anderson, surrounding her in concern.
Fred was offering Diane a glass of water when he saw me walking in. He immediately put the glass down, walked over, and asked, “What did the doctor say?”
I looked at him, but he avoided my gaze out of guilt. He stammered as he said, “It was an emergency. If we hadn’t used the heart for Diane’s transplant, she would’ve died from pain.”
My mother said, “Fred’s right! Daphne, it’s life-or-death. You wouldn’t be mad at us for something like this, right?”
I was about to speak but changed my mind. I said indifferently, “I’m not mad. The doctor said that he’ll have good news for me in a week.”
After a slight pause, I continued, “Good news for all of us.”
Fred readjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, and his beautiful eyes sparkled in joy. “Did you find another suitable heart in such a short period? I knew it! My decision that day was right.”
My father also let out a sigh of relief. He laughed and said, “Diane is a lucky girl. If we didn’t give her the heart first, she wouldn’t have survived another week.”
My mother immediately nodded as she gently smoothed Diane’s hair. She said, “Diane is going to get luckier, unlike someone, who obviously could’ve waited for another heart but threw a tantrum and embarrassed us.”
Even though I was already disappointed by them, it still hurt to hear that.
I clutched the hem of my shirt to stop myself from crying.
Fred looked at me softly, but his words sent shivers down my spine. “You were too agitated the other day. I think you should apologize to Diane.”
I stared at him in disbelief.
Diane snatched my heart away from me, and they still wanted me to apologize to her?
My mother agreed. “That’s right. If you hadn’t mistreated Diane that day, she wouldn’t have had a heart attack.
“You should be thanking your lucky stars that she’s still fine. Otherwise, I would’ve disowned you.”
I recalled that day when Diane stood before me and arrogantly showed off the hickies that Fred had given her. She was telling me how much Fred had treasured and desired her…
I could not help myself and slapped her, but they saw me doing it.
Fred rushed forward angrily to push me aside.
I fell onto the floor, and my mother charged forward to hit me.
My father was standing nearby, looking distant and cold, as though he felt like I deserved to be punished.
However, when I had a heart attack, Diane also pressed her hand against her heart and said she felt extreme pain in her heart.
Everyone believed her but thought I was faking it.
When I thought about that, I smiled bitterly. I said faintly, “Sorry, it was my fault.”
No one had expected me to apologize.
Fred’s gaze turned inquisitive.
Diane also frowned. She stared at me as though wondering why I was faking it.
My parents were looking at me warily, as though they were worried I would suddenly cause trouble again.
Only my son, Sammy, threw himself into my arms happily. “Mommy, that’s great! You finally apologized!
“You shouldn’t mistreat Aunt Diane. Otherwise, I’ll dislike you like how Grandpa and Grandma do.”
I looked at him. I could bear the coldness, misunderstanding, and favoritism from my parents and husband, but hearing the child I carried for nine months favor Diane over me was something I could not accept.
However, I had no energy left in me to argue.
I caressed his face and smiled. “I’ll listen to you then.”
It was only then that my mother nodded in satisfaction. “That’s right. It seems like you’ve learned your lesson.”
Fred also let out a sigh of relief as he said, “My wife has truly matured.”
I felt disgusted when I saw him feigning his love for me.
Right at that moment, Diane suddenly yelped in pain. Fred immediately rushed over to her.
My son, who was hugging me a moment ago, also let go of me and ran over to her. He asked, “Aunt Diane, are you alright? I can take care of you.”
Tears welled up in my parents’ eyes.
I was standing nearby like a clown.
I could no longer stand it. I told them that I was tired and left the ward.
Chapter 2
When I reached the door, I almost fainted from a sudden pain in my chest.
I leaned against the wall as I tried to get my bearings. I quickly pulled out some painkillers and swallowed a few to ease the pain.
Inside the ward, my mother accused me of being cold and indifferent.
She felt that I did not care about Diane.
However, I knew that Diane would feel unwell with me around.
That was her usual tactic in getting my parents’ attention.
However, she did not have to do that. From the beginning, my parents, my husband, and my son loved her even though she was a fraud.
As for me, my parents did not care about me.
They never looked for me. Hence, when I found them, they simply gave me a name starting with the letter D to match Diane’s name.
After I left the hospital in a daze, I took a taxi to the research lab where Diane was working.
I had already agreed to donate my body for their cryonics experiment.
When I was signing the agreement, the staff asked, “Ms. Bishop, are your parents and partner aware of your decision?”
I smiled and said softly, “They respect and support my decision.”
The staff said enviously, “That’s great! Your family must love you so much that they wish for you to be resurrected one day.”
Looking at her envious gaze, I felt as though I was truly loved by my parents and partner.
I smiled and said, “That’s right! Who wouldn’t love their own family?”
After I said that, I handed the agreement back to them.
After ensuring the arrangements were in place, I left the research lab and went home.
When I entered the house, I saw my belongings in the living room.
I frowned and looked at Mrs. Jane, Diane’s nanny, as she gave orders. Why was she here?
Like my parents, Mrs. Jane hated me because I was the real daughter of this family.
When she saw me, she smiled insincerely. “Diane is getting discharged today. Mr. Fred has asked me to take care of her and choose a room for her to rest.
“I saw that the master bedroom has the best one, so I’m picking that room for Diane’s recovery.
“The other rooms were occupied, so you have to stay in the basement.”
I said indifferently, “Alright.”
Mrs. Jane had not expected me to agree so readily. She paused.
She stared at me curiously and asked, “Are you not angry?”
I shook my head and walked toward the basement.
Mrs. Jane said in disdain, “It seems like you’ve finally learned your place. You should’ve been like this from the start.
“If so, your parents wouldn’t hate you so much.”
I did not respond. When I reached the basement, I could smell a musky odor.
The narrow space was filled with random things. There was only a small single bed. Half of the bed was filled with books.
I lay on top of the bed and fell asleep.
I was too tired, so I just wanted to get some rest…
However, my simple wish was not fulfilled.
After a while, someone woke me up abruptly. When I opened my eyes, I saw Fred’s panicked look.
His worried gaze immediately turned indifferent. He asked in a loud voice, “Why did you post about our marriage online?
“Do you know that a lot of people are cyberbullying Diane? Diane has just come out of her surgery. She’s weak right now.
“Because of this, she fell ill and fainted!
“I thought you had learnt your lesson. Turns out you’re just planning on taking revenge on us!”
I felt a splitting headache catching on.
I could not focus on his words from the intense pain. I said helplessly, “I didn’t do anything… If you don’t believe me, you can take a look at my phone.”
Fred yelled angrily, “Stop! The reporters admitted that you were the one who paid them to spread the news!
“How long do you plan to keep up this act? Come with me. Get on your knees and apologize to Diane!”
Chapter 3
Fred dragged me off the bed and took me outside.
He was walking too fast. I could not follow, and I hit my leg against the door frame with a loud thud. I whimpered in pain.
However, he only glanced at me and continued to drag me out.
When we reached the living room, he let go of me so forcefully that I fell to the floor. I felt as though my bones had shattered. Just as I was about to stand up, my mother rushed over and slapped me.
I could taste blood in my mouth.
I looked up and saw Diane crying pitifully in my father’s arms. My mother was staring at me viciously.
Her dark eyes were filled with disgust and hatred for me.
It seemed like she wanted to tear me to pieces.
Perhaps I looked too indifferent because she raised her hand to slap me again.
I could no longer hold back as I threw up blood.
The blood splattered across her face and her raised hand. She was momentarily stunned.
Her hand stopped next to my cheek. I could feel it brush past my skin.
I could not help but hold her hand and place it on my cheek as I cried.
I wanted my mother to caress me like she did Diane, instead of coldly slapping me in anger.
My mother pulled back her hand as if she had been electrocuted.
I fell onto the floor in exhaustion. Blood oozed out of my nose.
Fred was startled and rushed forward. He asked anxiously, “What’s wrong with you? Why are you throwing up so much blood?”
I looked at him. His hands trembled.
He looked as though he was really worried about me.
I pushed his hand aside. Just as I tried to get up, I threw up mouthfuls of blood again.
I finally saw fear in my mother’s eyes.
She shook her head and said, “I… I only slapped her a few times. It wasn’t my fault!”
After that, she asked in concern, which felt out of character for her. “Daphne, are you okay? I… I’ll take you to the hospital…”
My father also walked over to me and asked, “What’s wrong? Quick, help Daphne up.”
My son, Sammy, also threw himself at me and sobbed. “Mommy, you’ve lost a lot of blood. Are you going to die?”
My mother yelled, “Don’t say that!”
At the same time, Mrs. Jane suddenly walked out with a packet in her hand. She said angrily, “Ms. Daphne, why are you scaring your mother and Mr. Fred with blood packs?”
‘Blood packs? What blood packs?’ I thought.
Before I could make sense of it, my mother rushed toward Mrs. Jane. She glanced at the item in Mrs. Jane’s hands and threw it onto the floor angrily.
She yelled, “Daphne! You’re such a scheming, trashy person! You’re using blood packs to gain sympathy!”
I smiled bitterly as I shook my head. I was already on my best behavior. Why were they still coming after me?
Fred crouched down and stared at me in disappointment. “Daphne, when did you change so much?”
My father angrily returned to Diane’s side. He said in disgust, “Despicable! A feral child who’s cunning and cold-blooded!
“You can’t even compare to Diane!”
I did not say a word. I swallowed the blood that I was about to throw up.
Sammy, who had been in my arms, pushed me away in disgust.
He frowned and said, “Mommy, I thought you’d changed your ways. You’re so evil! I don’t like you anymore!”
After that, he ran back to Diane’s side. He pressed himself against Diane’s thighs and said, “I want Aunt Diane to be my mommy!”
I was heartbroken. I clenched my fists tightly. My nails bit into my flesh, and I could not stop my tears.
Fred sighed. He wiped my tears away and said, “You know better than anyone how hurtful it is to be betrayed by the person closest to you.
“Why do you still pull such stunts? Now, Diane’s reputation is ruined. Our company’s stock is also unstable.
“It’s all because of you. Not only do you have to apologize, but you also have to come up with a contingency plan.”
I wanted to say that I was unaware of everything, but Diane started crying. She sobbed and said, “It’s fine, Fred… Daphne harmed me so many times. I’m afraid that if we force her to apologize, she’ll only hate me more.
“I don’t even know why she hates me so much, but… I’m willing to let it go for my parents and for you, Fred.”
My mother said in concern, “Diane, you’re too nice. That’s why you get mistreated by her.
“Don’t worry, your father and I will always be by your side. With our protection, she can never hurt you again.”
After that, she stared at me coldly. “You better listen! To protect our and Fred’s reputation, we’ve come up with a plan.
“You and Fred should get a divorce tomorrow, and he’ll marry Diane.
“We will then make a public announcement that Fred and Diane got married long ago. But we kept it a secret from you because of your health and because you liked Fred.”
I looked at Fred and asked, “Do you agree to this too?”
Fred avoided my gaze. He frowned and said impatiently, “It’s out of my control. You’re the one who started this mess!”
After a pause, he said, “But don’t worry. This is only a stalling strategy. After the crisis is over, Diane and I will get a divorce.”
I stared at him. I was at a loss for words.
Maybe he felt guilty or thought that my silence was a form of protest. It made him really unhappy. He said with an icy look, “If you agree to this, I’ll…”
I slowly said, “Of course. Congratulations! I hope you have a happy marriage.”
Chapter 4
Fred suddenly stopped talking.
He stared at me in disbelief as an indescribable sense of fear crept up on him.
He felt that I was like a feather that would soon drift away with the wind, where he could never find me.
I slowly got up. I leaned against the wall and wiped the blood from my face. I looked at my mother and said, “Fred and I didn’t get legally married anyway.
“So, he can get married to Diane directly.”
My mother was surprised. She asked, “You didn’t sign the papers?”
Fred’s face fell. He frowned and said, “I was too busy. After a while, I might have forgotten about it.”
My mother clapped her hands. “That’s great news!”
Sammy glanced at me cautiously and asked, “Then, would Aunt Diane be my mommy?”
I nodded and said with a smile, “Are you happy?”
Sammy jumped in joy. “Yay! Aunt Diane is my mommy!”
It seemed he had realized I might be displeased. He said, “Mommy… No… Aunt Daphne, as long as you promise you won’t bully Aunt Diane, I’ll still like you.”
I looked down and said in a soft voice, “Alright.”
Diane burst into tears of joy. She asked, “Are you really willing to let Fred marry me?”
I said calmly, “Yes, he’ll be your husband.”
Diane glanced at Fred shyly.
She initially thought Fred would be happy, but Fred was only staring at me. She fisted her sleeves and looked down to hide her jealousy.
When she looked up again, she composed herself to look innocent. She said sincerely, “Thank you, Daphne.”
I shook my head and said indifferently, “We’re a family. You don’t have to thank me for that.
“Besides, you’ll be taking care of me too in the future.”
Diane did not know that I had already signed the consent form to donate my body to her current research lab. She thought that I was just being polite, so she smiled and said, “We’re sisters. Of course, I’ll take care of you!”
My mother saw us make up and nodded in satisfaction. “That’s right. When you handle things so maturely, how could your father and I stay mad at you?”
I looked at her. I really wanted to ask her if I had really ever been immature.
I was the rightful daughter of the Bishop family, but everyone thought that I was adopted.
Fred was the one who wanted to marry me, but everyone thought that I was the mistress.
I was the one who took care of Fred and Sammy without any complaints and without a rightful status, but everyone thought that I was unruly and cruel.
I slowly shut my eyes and held back my tears.
I no longer wanted to cry before them.
It was because I knew that if I cried, Diane would cry harder.
At this time, even my tears had become my flaws.
When I opened my eyes again, I felt as though my heart had gone numb.
It was like an old clock that had stopped working.
I looked at Fred and noticed that he was looking at me with pity.
I felt that it was ridiculous. I whispered, “Can I go back and rest now?”
Fred nodded and said, “Yes, go and get some rest.”
I let out a sigh of relief and slowly walked toward the basement.
My mother said, “Get your things and come home with us.
“The house is surrounded by reporters now. If everyone finds out that you’re staying at your brother-in-law’s place, they might suspect something.”
I nodded obediently and said, “Alright.”
My mother instructed Fred to take me home. After we walked out, he suddenly grabbed my wrist and said, “I’ll come with you for your surgery next week.
“Once your surgery is done, let’s talk properly.
“Diane and I… It’s not what you think.”
I saw Diane’s face fall, and I smiled at Fred. “Alright.”
Fred looked at me strangely, as though the person standing in front of him was an emotionless rock.
He felt a bit frustrated. “Let’s go.”
After we got into the car, we were silent.
A few times, Fred seemed like he wanted to say something. But after he looked at my blood-stained face, he lost the urge to speak.
Halfway through the journey, my mother called him.
The next second, he stopped the car on the side of the road and said anxiously, “Diane has suddenly fainted. Maybe she’s experiencing a serious rejection.
“I have to rush back. You should take a taxi home.”
I glanced at time on the dashboard. It was three in the morning.
We were on an elevated highway in an isolated area. How was I supposed to get a taxi?
However, I did not speak. I just got out of the car.
Before I could even stand upright, Fred had already sped away.
The rumbling sound of the sports car echoed the pain in my heart.
I pressed my hand against my chest. After a long while, the pain finally subsided a little.
It had just gotten better when I heard thunder. It was as if the universe could not stand my weakness and wanted to roar at me.
After a while, it started raining heavily. The chilly rain made my pain worsen.
From the sound, I realized that a hailstorm was coming.
I covered my head and started to walk. The hard hail hit my arms and face.
It was too painful.
I could not help but burst into tears.
I did not want to cry, but it was painful getting pelted by hail.
I suddenly lost consciousness and fell to the ground after walking a while.
After a really long time, I heard the ambulance sirens. Then, I heard my doctor’s familiar voice.
It sounded like he was crying. He asked, “What happened? She had a week to live! How… how could this be?”
My ribs hurt. It felt like the doctor was pressing on them too hard.
Was he trying to resuscitate me? But… it was too painful.
Life was painful…
I just wanted to let go…
Beep…
A patient had died at five in the morning on the first of June after rescue efforts failed. She was only 28 years old.
At the same time, the famous research lab, Artisan of Heart, took in her body and preserved it using cryonics.
