I rented a girlfriend online to bring home for the New Year.

When I arrived at the meeting spot, it turned out to be my boss, Elise Renwick.

In that moment, all I wanted to do was run!

But Elise had already spotted me.

She looked at me, surprised, then at the hat: Halt! Who goes there?

I replied: “Friend.”

We both fell silent.

I still remember, right before the holiday, she just yelled at me in the office.

She said this project was crucial, if I messed up again, I’d be fired.

I was trembling.

It’s not that I’m weak—

Elise is the youngest executive in our company.

She’s gorgeous with a great talent at work, but her standards also brutally high.

Almost everyone is a little scared of her.

And she’s terrifyingly competent.

Aside from her temper, there’s nothing to criticize.

“Brilliant and terrifying” is how we describe her in private.

And now, my nightmares was standing right in front of me.

As my rented girlfriend…

God… I’m doomed.

Elise adjusted her glasses: “So it was you who rented a girlfriend on the app?”

Her tone was like, “So it was you who leaked company secrets to the competition?”

Me: “Yeah… but the user who accepted my request was called ‘BigBoobSpeaksFirst’.”

“…”

Elise said reluctantly: “That’s me.”

I was both scared and amused: “So what do we do now?”

“What were your requirements?”

“Come back to my hometown with me for this New Year, pretend to be my girlfriend to meet my parents, daily paid…”

Elise fell into thought.

“Alright!”

I found out later, why Elise agreed.

Her family had been pressuring her so much about getting married.

Her friend accepted my request on a dating app as Elise! Without telling Elise the details.

Just said, it would help her avoid matchmaking and family pressure.

On the way home, I quietly opened the app and messaged “BigBoobSpeaksFirst”: “What’s going on? Your friend showed up?”

She replied: “Yeah! Surprise! Bet you didn’t see that coming!”

Me: “Isn’t this fraud?”

BigBoobSpeaksFirst: “Not happy?”

“Besides, we barely chatted, never exchanged photos. Just treat it like she took the job. No difference.”

Me: “But…”

“Look, buddy, I’m kinda helpless here. Don’t let her cold exterior fool you—she’s actually super unlucky in love. Thirty and still single. If no one wants her soon, she might just become a nun. Sob.”

Reading this, I couldn’t help glancing at Elise.

She caught me looking: “Leonardo, did you bring your laptop home?”

“Yeah.”

“Your proposal plan needs a complete rework. Just a heads-up.”

Me: …

Elise: “If you don’t do well this time, the company will replace you with another guy! Think carefully.”

Me: …

In the app, “BigBoob” was still going on about how pitiful Elise was.

I replied bitterly: If your friend can’t find a boyfriend, maybe she should think about why…)

Besides the pressure from work, Elise was professional to be the “Fake Girl Friend”.

She bought local souvenirs and fruits.

When meeting my parents, she instantly switched into character—sweet, calling them Mom and Dad…

I was stunned watching her.

Who’d ever seen Director Elise act so innocent and cute?

My parents didn’t suspect a thing.

They loved her: “Lily! Finally meeting you! So great, and so pretty!”

“Lily?”

I nudged her to play along.

Mom added: “Lily seems like such a good girl. My son Leo was a lucky man.”

We thought… We’d get through this holiday just fine.

Turns out, I relaxed too soon.

After dinner, at the bedroom door, Elise suddenly asked: “Where do I sleep?”

I froze.

I’d forgotten—my family’s apartment is small, two bedrooms.

One for my parents, one for me.

Mom came over smiling: “Lily, we don’t have a guest room. You can share with Leo’s room tonight.”

“Mom!”

I panicked.

“We can’t do that!”

“Then what? We can’t have Lily sleep in the living room.”

Mom said, “You’ve been dating three years, and this trip is about marriage, right? Squeeze in for now. Tomorrow I’ll buy a foldable bed.”

With that, she closed the door.

Leaving Elise and me staring at each other.

I hurriedly explain: “Mom didn’t believe I’d bring a girlfriend home, so she didn’t prepare anything…”

Elise, after smiling all day, now had a poke face.

She returned to her usual stern expression.

“Explain: who’s ‘Lily’?”

She sat at my desk.

I instinctively stood straight, like I was reporting to her at office…

“Lily was my ex. We were together three years. We planned to visit my parents this year, but she cheated on me…”

Elise’s brow furrowed slightly.

I felt nervous, unsure what would happened next…

Cautiously, I continued: “I was depressed for a while. My parents guessed we broke up and suggested I quit my job and move back to my hometown. I didn’t want them to worry, so I lied.”

Elise: “So you rented a girlfriend online!?”

“Yes.”

“Leonardo, I suggest you to tell them the truth. You can’t hide it forever.”

“Let’s get through the New Year first. I’ll tell them later.”

Elise’s sharp eyes fixed on me.

The atmosphere was tense.

Even knowing this wasn’t at work, I couldn’t help feeling nervous.

After what felt like ages, she asked: “Scared of me?”

“Let’s sleep!”

Elise looked at my messy room and decided to take the floor to sleep.

I couldn’t let my boss, a kind lady, to sleep on the floor.

But she refused to sleep on my bed.

If I’d known how unforgettable this night would be, I’d have rather slept on the street.

Before showering, Elise asked if I had a towel—she’d forgotten hers.

I was laying out a blanket and absently said: “There are new ones in the drawer under the bay window.”

When she opened it, she froze: “…Where?”

I turned around: “Can’t find it—?”

My words trailed off.

Why was the drawer full of my underwear?

Elise had already looked away: “Forget it.”

“No, wait!” I shoved the drawer shut, my toes curling.

“Maybe Mom rearranged things. Let me check elsewhere.”

Sure enough, I found towels in another spot.

After her shower, Elise smelled amazing.

She wasn’t wearing her usual glasses.

I’d heard she was extremely nearsighted, so I stole a few glances.

Huh.

Without glasses, she looked softer.

So she has double eyelids.

Her skin really is flawless.

I stared until Elise suddenly turned: “Done looking?”

“…How’d you know I was staring?”

Elise smirked: “You think I’m blind?”

“Aren’t you extremely nearsighted?”

“Says who?” She held her glasses up.

The lenses were thin.

“Also, has no one told you? Even if I were, it doesn’t mean I’m blind.”

I was mortified.

So she’d seen me staring…

Following the “less talk, less mistake” principle, I dove under the covers, refusing to say another word.

But how could I sleep?

With the lights off, every sound amplified.

My room was small.

Her floor bed was right next to mine.

Elise’s breathing constantly reminded me: there’s a woman in this room.

I didn’t dare to chat with her, just stared at the ceiling.

I stared until midnight, finally feeling sleepy.

But then, I needed to use the bathroom.

I carefully got up, but just as I reach the door, I had to pass Elise.

Her breathing was soft—probably asleep.

As I tried to step around her—

My foot caught on something.

I stumbled and fell right on top of her.

Elise woke up.

“Leo!”

She gritted her teeth.

“Sorry! I just needed to pee!”

“Get your hand off!”

“Huh?”

Hand?

Oh. I felt it.

My hand… was on something soft.

I jumped back like a spring.

But lost my balance and stumbled again…

This time, my face landed on the softness.
